I'm so lame, I actually waved at my computer monitor when the video feed loaded up. In my defense, there's something oddly compelling about seeing a host so casually, when she's not even doing her show, just sitting back and listening to someone else's speech.
It was also neat that this is basically behind the scenes. Seeing Rachel chat with Andy during the commercial break is like a DVD extra.
I hope tomorrow you carry the speech of Tammy Duckworth as MSNBC was too busy explaining to us "DUMMIES" what we had just heard. Her speech was inspiring and touching, while the MSNBC "panel", including you, our hero, droned on and on.
I am sorry, but I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in MSNBC coverage.
The MSM always tries to tell us what we have just heard so that we get the corporate spin on it. If they don't like it, they'll make whatever we heard into a negative thing.
The worst offender is the FOX network, who only shows soundbytes and then spinseverything into negatives for the Democrats and positives for the Republicans, no matter what actually happened.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Dwight Eisenhower
MSNBC also spoke over the people when they were citing the votes from each state, it got so bad (especially during Colorado) that I switched over to CNN (SHUDDER) to watch and actually hear.
Chuck Todd was particularly bad, but then Keith and Chris would engage him as the vote counts were being logged. I love much of their coverage, but they were ABSURD tonight.
Ironically and happily, MSNBC's online stream is all convention, no chatter. No cable here, so that's how I've been watching the evening festivities. Video is kind of crappy, but it works.
I was watching your web coverage. As I was listening during a break, I saw something amazing. A "talent" was back timing her own show!!! And wait for it.....with a pencil.. I was in awe. It is not a skill everyone has, believe me. So I just wanted to say thanks for making my day!!
Shout out to Mrs. Maddow (Rachel's Mom)...because I know she reads the blog from time to time. Mrs. Maddow, PLEASE tell your daughter for me that I am beyond thrilled about her new tv show. I cannot wait for it. She and Keith are a great 1-2 punch! Oh and tell her to stock on the vitamins because she will need them with all the work she's got on her plate. :-)
Rachel, as for advice...please keep the soft underbelly, bring on Kent and show off that sense of humor of yours (it is wonderful to see you just crack up like any other person would...like tonight when Pat Buchanan got schooled about WHO leads the panel...patented Rachel head/desk moment). Other than that, just keep telling the truth and keep focusing on the the really important things, not the distractions that the spin-meisters would rather us get stuck on.
Yes, it really looked like Rachel needed that moment as a release.
Throughout tonight I thought she was just one more Uncle Pat comment away from going all Zinedine Zidane on him. Even mild mannered Eugene Robinson was quick to jump into the fray from across the desk just to quiet Uncle Pat.
I truly think that Uncle Pat will have Howard Beale moment Thursday night when confronted with the reality that Senator Obama just might deliver a tremendous speech at Mile High. Get ready to duck Rachel - it could be very ugly and sad.
Also, I think Gene Robinson made a great point that got a bit lost in the battle between Rachel & her buddy. He said that the decision to go light on the hardcore slams against McCain may be a strategy directed at wooing the Republican moderates (few as there are) and those generally conservative leaning independents who realize that they really made a big mistake in voting for Bush twice.
If Obama and the Dems really go after McCain (with the complete laundry list of slams we know from our days listening to TRMS) in this nationally televised setting, some of those moderates & independents may be turned off, thinking it's just business as usual by these scary lefty Dems. However, by going all soft and family oriented (for the most part), Obama and the Dems appear to be an acceptable alternative (at least this once) for these people on the fence.
These folks might be the difference in a close election as we know the hardcore Dems & GOPers will eventually get behind their candidate.
It's a calculated strategy to not use these nights to pummel McCain & the GOP but I'm guessing that they (Obama Camp) really don't want to look too scary to these casual politicos who really aren't the political junkies we are. My guess is that the real hard body slams will start to come on the campaign trail by Biden & surrogates when the media spotlight isn't that bright. Risky to use the convention coverage in this way but is in keeping with the Obama new politics mantra.
It is also based on the hope that McCain will eventually get frustrated and have an explosive tirade in front of a live camera. I think that's where Biden's long time Senate career will come in handy, knowing exactly what will set McCain off. Dropping a few F-bombs or maybe calling a persistent female reporter a none too polite term might just sway a few of those undecideds who voted for Bush before.
Oh I agree. So far, I really like Obama's judgment. He made what I thought was impossible happen, him getting the nomination at all. So, I think he's pretty darn smart and good at the strategery! lol
I think he's tough but knows just when to stop and not get into diminishing returns.

okay enough with the gushing.
If you watched Rachel on MSNBC last night, you will know that she is absolutely crushed to hear this news. She was giddy about Gustav slamming into New Orleans and causing death and destruction. Alas, the current track takes it west of there: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at2+shtml/111213.shtml?5day#con...
Did you ever stop to think about the lives effected, or ended, by Gustav hitting the more populated New Orleans area? Are those people just "collateral damage," sacrificed to the greater good of helping elect a liberal president?

How much lack of judgement is attributed to McCain to choose the female Governor of Alaska as his VP, to choose Sen. Joe Lieberman to speak at his convention, and to attack Sen. Obama as to his judgement! Why does not someone contend that Mr. McCain cannot make a positive and committed choice over time. to vote for his own ( at least 2) That the VP choice is a great women but is espected to be responsive and committed to her family by their own conviction, to assure her own teenage daughter and is pregnant with her grandchild and married to a big oill, union worder that is available to good health care benefits and mostly will not be distracted nor be at least drawn into and at worst legislate to support big oil and at best to be distracted and be available to her most important need - her daughter. It cannot be both ways, either you are for family values or you will put them at # 2 for your country!
As we continue the Republian point of view and we submit to their view of "change" and reform, we can best deduce that former VP Al Gore made the worst judgement as choosing his VP of Joe Liberman who just endorsed John McCain!
