Set Your VCR’s: Tonight Is Going To Be A Night To Remember

By The Seminal

If there is one speech that you do not want to miss this entire election cycle, it is tonight’s acceptance of the Democratic Party’s nomination by Barack Obama.

First of all, there’s just the sheer historical significance of the event.  Since the first presidential election in 1789, there have been more than 100 nominees from major political parties.  Obama will be the first that is something other than a white male.  I do not believe that it is possible to understate what this means for the roughly 71% of the American population who have until now been unrepresented in every single general election.

Nonetheless, the barrier-breaking beauty of the Obama campaign has gotten disturbingly little attention by the media.  They seem obsessed with creating disunity and controversy at what has turned out to be a very unified and celebratory event.  So please, if you are not already doing so, take a minute to step back, breath in the air of history, and enjoy the moment - because tonight, for the very first time, a member of a minority takes the reins of a major party’s presidential campaign.

But beyond the historical drama, tonight’s speech by Obama promises to be an electrifying event in and of itself.  Already during this campaign, we have been treated to a number of his scintillating orations - from his moving treatment of race in America given in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright controversy; to his stunning appearance in front of 200,000 adoring Berliners; to the inspirational everyday stump speech that I was privileged to witness on a freezing January day in Clemson, South Carolina.

The man knows how to speak, and he has proven that he can step up his game for big occassions.  Tonight is as big as it gets, so I for one am expecting the amazing.

And it’s not that I’m a huge Obama fan.  I am supporting him, but with some serious reservations about his increasingly centrist policies.  My good feelings for tonight come more from an appreciation of the evening’s transcendent possibilities than from any kind of partisan support of Obama or his positions.  The moments we will witness tonight and in the next few months will be ones that we will tell our children and grandchildren about.  Let’s enjoy them while they last.

TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!

Well, you're gonna have to wait. It's not until 10 PM eastern.

But, take comfort in the fact that, in a couple months, you'll no longer have to wait in excited anticipation. You'll get to hear from him each and every day for the next eight years.

I can't wait.

It's odd.

Not many people are actually proud of being ignorant.

Hey, Farmer McDouchebag... I suppose you're aware that Greece is the very BIRTHPLACE of democracy (of course you aren't - you're a fucking retard!)... Or that this motif (look it up, Contard) is found ALL OVER WASHINGTON??

Columns... Yeah, THAT'S CRAZY!

You guys enjoy this evenings festivities....

No matter which side of the political spectrum you inhabit, you have to admit it is an historical event. I know I'll be watching. Just so I can tell my grandchildren about it. If I can find a ticket scalper today, I'm going to try to be there in person and yes.... I promise to behave while I'm there...... But, tomorrow, my worthy adversaries, the battle begins anew..... Enjoy your moment.

I have to agree with you on one thing

...these are, indeed, historic times. But it can be argued that ANY time is historic.

And as far as scalpers go...I came across one two days ago that tried his best to sell me tickets for the US Open. I would be far more tempted to purchase one to that event than to either of the Conventions. Something about talent and ability...and the winner being decided solely on those qualities. (Besides, quite a few of the women are just plain HAWT!)

How the hell are you, lady? All is well in Atlanta?

Thanks for the post ...

Hi Pook! In Denver till tomorrow afternoon.

How's the young 'un? A.G. has been calling me an "contard"...god that makes me soooo freaking hot. ;)

VERY cool - Wish I was there!

The young 'un isn't so young anymore ... starts her junior year in HS tomorrow ... and she's driving ... GET OFF THE ROAD!!

Ah, take that moniker as a sign of 'affection'!

I'll trade you

Mine starts her senior year in HS next Tuesday. And she sent off her first-ever college application last week.

Advice to new parents: DON'T BLINK! You'll miss a lot!

HELL no! I'm having enough trouble coming to terms

with my princess being a junior ... senior will push me over the edge! The college fair at her school is scheduled for next month - I think that's when it'll REALLY hit home for me!

Congrats to your kid and you have my every sympathy!

Advice to new parents: LISTEN TO WHAT NONEXISTENT SAYS!!

"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."
George Carlin

I got news for you

The college years go by even faster. And you keep thinking that after graduation they'll be back. Think again! Mine finished up in June and got a job right away, but still in Mass. so we see her even less. College is all about giving the parents 4 or 5 years to get it through their heads that the kid is living their own life.

Thanks for the warning ...

The past few years have gone by so quickly already! I am soooooooooooooooo not ready for this. But I think I've done a pretty good job at raising her to be independent so I've got confidence that, where ever she ends up, for college and afterwards, she'll be okay. Me? Not so sure but knowing what a good egg the kid is, I'll get over it!

Dang

and I was SURE that Hottie was NOT. Got a pitcher of her daughter?

Deeds, not words, are what matter.

I will skip the pretty speech and wait to see what he does once he's in office.

By thaelmann37 August 28 9:10 am

Amen to that. This thing in the stadium, like the rest of the convention, is nothing but scripted fluff. One must judge the candidates by deeds.

McCain--Says he supports the troops but votes against their best interests at every opportunity
McCain--says he's for the Middle Class but supports plans to tax employer-provided health care whhe richest among us yet more tax breaks.
McCain--said he was opposed to torture, before he was for it.
McCain--said he'll respond to any provocation by Iran with bombs (5 times)

What exactly are these "increasingly centrist policies"?

If you mean what the majority of Americans want, then isn't that what he's supposed to do? We've had eight years of a small group of extremists dictating what this country should do and sending us down a path of destruction. It's time that the people were actually back in charge.

In addition, his "extreme" positions, like universal healthcare, would benefit all Americans. I'm tired of paying $5,000/year in premiums just to be denied coverage for something that costs $100. There is no reason any hard-working American should lose their home because they have to declare bankruptcy after hospitalization. And thanks to the Republicons, if they declare bankruptcy it's nearly impossible for them to rebuild their life.

Walk, jog, run... sprint to the center. That is where government is supposed to be.

"...religion, in and of itself, ...is neither good nor bad... it is like a knife. When you use a knife for cutting bread, it’s good. If you use that knife to stick into somebody’s guts, it’s bad." - Bishop Desmond Tutu

" sprint to the center."

Exactly what we don't need, another centrist politician. Moderates don't have the sack to get what the people of our country need.

"Of the people, by the people, for the people"

That means majority which correlates to "centrist". Obama is meant to do what the majority of people want. That's the reason any politician is supposed to be there; to enact the will of the people.

What, exactly, do you want Obama to do while he's President? Like I said before, we've seen eight years of what happens when the government is not centrist. I don't want another extremist in the White House. America can't afford it.

"...religion, in and of itself, ...is neither good nor bad... it is like a knife. When you use a knife for cutting bread, it’s good. If you use that knife to stick into somebody’s guts, it’s bad." - Bishop Desmond Tutu

What you saw was was eight years of right- wing extremism.

Even though Bush tried, and to some extent succeded, to make the executive branch supreme over the other two branches of government, the president can't just sign some paper and make shit happen. Some of you ( on either side of the fence) seem to think he can.
Obama will need extraordinary leadership ability and political saavy to get America moving forward again. He can start by:
1) repudiating NAFTA and no more international trade deals that are beneficial to only to big business in the countries involved.
2) proposing regulation on the pharmaceutical companies- that is the step on the road to national healthcare.
3) propose a plan to provide incentives to businesses that use and/ or develop alternative energy sources that are clean and will eventually replace oil as a fuel.
4) actually fight terrorism rather than just invade a country that has resources the American elite wants and create more terrorists.
I think we can all agree on that program ( well, the sane people anyway). But seeing how much lobbyists influence both parties, I will remain skeptical and adopt f u's 5- year plan.

What is included in left-wing extremism?

Democrats, by nature, are centrist. They try to do what is in the best interest of the nation and it's people. Republicons, by nature, are lemmings. They follow whoever is in the lead. This time it was Rove and Cheney (Bush is too stupid to be in the lead; he just took orders).

What makes what you are proposing not centrist? It's in the best interest of the country and a majority of people want it.

When I think of extremist, I think of books at the Grand Canyon stating that the canyon was carved by God's flood for Noah, or promoting creationism in school, or passing legislation that makes it seem as if gay people are less than human. The most extreme left-wing idea I can think of to come from the Democrats is universal healthcare, but it still is something a majority of people want. It's not extreme in relation to the requests of the people.

Obama is not being centrist, he's just using common sense and good judgement. Let's praise him for that, not demonize him.

"...religion, in and of itself, ...is neither good nor bad... it is like a knife. When you use a knife for cutting bread, it’s good. If you use that knife to stick into somebody’s guts, it’s bad." - Bishop Desmond Tutu

I never claimed any of the things listed was extremist.

Never claimed Dems were anything but centrist.
I just don't think centrists get anything done.
Not without pressure from ordinary people..
And people's democracy, economic as well as political, is an extreme, left- wing idea.
Which is good.
BTW, I criticize Obama for his voting record, not for being a centrist. Voting for that telecom immunity bill, that was a fuckin' doozy.

PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME PUKE!

.
This was the worst convention in history.

Let me explain something. People want to feel safe. Even though we KNOW the Republicans have made us less safe, devastated our Armed Forces, bankrupted our economy, still they come out fighting. People respect that.

If I hear “resonate” once more, I am going to puke. We don’t need to hear “kum by ya” and “let’s open the window to the bright and shiny light that is tomorrow’s day”.

We need to hit the Republicans.

DICK CHENEY WAS NOT MENTIONED ONCE.

GUANTANAMO TORTURE WAS NOT MENTIONED ONCE.

I heard Katrina mentioned only once and as part of a laundry list of words.

I NEVER HEARD WALTER RIED MENTIONED ONCE.

I NEVER HEARD THAT WE WERE MISLED INTO IRAQ.

I NEVER HEARD THAT IT’S A CRIME THAT WE HAVEN’T CAUGHT BIN LADIN.

Instead, there is all this fucking “reaching out” and “let’s heal the wounds”. Barf!

This is a political race to throw out of office terrible people that have greatly damaged our country.

When the Republicans start next week, they will brand Obama a Sunni Terrorists on the side of those that took out the WTC. They will tie him to Wright and Rezko. And they will be playing hardball.

This convention was so soft and so retarded; the Democrats may not be able to recover.

If you think Obama is going to give a hard-hitting speech tonight, forget it. It will be another of those puke filled, “We are the World” speeches.

We are going to have four years of McCain. And then Hillary will get another shot. Believe me, I am most definitely NOT a Hillary supporter, but at least she knows how to play hardball.

This convention has left me terribly sad that Democrats, with all their ideals could be so weak and spineless.

Bill Clinton almost played hardball but didn’t. Joe Biden absolutely didn’t.

You gotta give him one thing.

He sure is fired up!

I'm with you. I think the convention has been carefully crafted and flawlessly executed... Just the way the Obama Administration will be.

They had to LEAD the party through a mine field of possible fuck-ups to perform several critical functions.

DAY ONE: Show the REAL Michelle Obama for the magnificent, professionally accomplished wife, and mother to a beautiful family, that she is. To show her commitment to, and love for, the nation that nurtured her.

DAY TWO: Set the stage for party unity... Hillary steps up.

DAY THREE: Unify the party and rehabilitate Bill Clinton; Solidify Biden - the plain talking, clear visioned statesman and man of the people; Expose Reaganomics and Neo-Conservatism for the national disaster it is... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

========================

All good things come to those who wait.

No doubt in my mind that the bloodthirsty will get all the red meat they can eat over the next two months. Biden is a master of peeling the skin off of bullshit artists and Obama is a political ninja... He seems to never touch you... yet there is your disembodied, bloody heart on the floor, taking its last beats.

WEAK, IT'S BEEN WEAK.

.
Certainly Michelle Obama gave a wonderful and touching speech. My eyes were certainly moist. I related to her family for sure.

Beyond that -

McCain as turned this into a referendum on Obama. McCain has called Obama a traitor, saying that he wouldn't mind losing a war to win an election. McCain has completely defined Obama. That's the way it's played in politics. You have to define your opponent.

How many Americans believe Obama is a Muslim? Look how he has been tied to Rev Wright and Rezko.

FIGHTING BACK ISN'T ANSWERING THESE CHARGES, BUT TURNING THE ATTENTION TO MCCAIN'S LACK OF JUDGEMENT AND WHISPERING JOE AND MCCAIN'S LACK OF ANYTHING IMPORTANT IN THE SENATE AND MCCAIN'S DISGRACEFUL VOTING RECORD AGAINST OUR SOLDIERS.

When Clinton left office, there was a 120 billion surplus. Now there is a 500 billion deficit.

We are spending 10 billion a month in Iraq.

The Iraq constitution makes it a fundamentalist Islamic country.

1.4 million Christians have been decimated to 700,000 and when we leave they will finish the job.

The Iraqis have 80 billion in oil money sitting in our banks, while we mortgage our children’s future paying for everything.

Our country tortures and has secret prisons.

Our economy is being devastated.

McCain wants to start more wars.

Our military has been devastated and our wounded soldiers are being sent to Walter Reid and Fort Sill.

We have 200,000 veterans living on the streets.

None of these things were really discussed. This would have blown the roof off the house.

We need discontent. What the Democrats have done the last three days is terrible. They need to stand up to the neocons, but when you have Democrats saying, “Let’s reach across the isle and make the future bright and shiny”, the entirely WRONG message is being sent.

You watch, if the Republicans can accuse Obama of being a traitor BEFORE their convention, there is nothing they won’t say or do. I believe McCain will be elected if this campaign stays weak. I'm not even sure they can recover from this convention. Once the Republicans start going after Obama, the media will play it endlessly.

Does anyone believe the media will play "let's dance in fields of lilies and drink honeydew" over and over again? Or will they play Rev. Wright and Rezko and Obama is a Muslim over and over and over again?

Everything...Every. Single. Thing. that dean has mentioned has been covered by one speaker or another. The problem clearly is: dean decided to watch the coverage on one of the major 24/7 news networks as opposed to C-Span... thereby robbing him/herself of the opportunity to hear the very things s/he desires to hear. That MSNBC/CNN/FaxuNews didn't cover most of the speeches in no way means that speakers haven't been touching on the issues s/he raised. What s/he has raised has been covered by speakers.

Not hearing what s/he desires to hear is nobody's fault but his/her own. If s/he wants to gripe, s/he should be griping about those speakers not being covered by the media.

His/her ire is simply misdirected.

That said: something tells me even if dean did hear it all, it still wouldn't be enough. S/he is clearly angry almost to the point of delusion. And there just isn't enough red meat to satisfy that diet.

I had to work last night but luckily I'm a bartender and have a couple of television sets at my disposal. I was surprised a few people requested that I turn up the volume so we could listen to the speeches. I decided to flip the channel from the cable news channel to cspan. Several of the customers asked me why. I replied
"Because I'd like to process what is said in the speech without someone telling me what I'm supposed to think of it".

One Republican customer commented

So began my experiment...

I must respectfully disagree on a couple of points. While I DO agree, to a point, that this convention has been pretty staid, and could have gone farther in hammering on the Repugs, Biden gave a subtle, but not so subtle, jab at Darth;

John Kerry spoke about Iraq and the lies that lead up to the invasion and Gitmo; If I'm not mistaken, it was either Clinton or Biden that spoke of torture as well;

Biden talked about Monkey Boy's failure to capture bin Laden.

I thought Clinton, Kerry and Biden hit home runs last night. The only disappointment I have is that it took three days before the fireworks REALLY started; yes a little more subdued that I would have liked but, the points were made and made pretty well. I am hopeful that the REAL Biden will be on the campaign trail.

And I still refuse to believe that you are a druggie plant. It obviously needs to be said again;
We DO NOT have a majority in the Senate!
We have a marginal majority in the House!
The MSM feeds on controversy (especially when it is w/in the party). They want it to look like it is a close race and if we feed them an angry "doom and gloom" (remember that old saw? It worked!) message they will feed on it for many news cycles and it will be the equivalent of Dukakis in a tank, Gore as stiffy, Kerry as ....what the hell did they pin on him anyway? and people will NOT vote because they are being told that it is close. They've been burned before!
Please Amy, I mean dread, don't do this again.

Economy rebounds in 2Q, mostly spurred by exports

Excerpt:

By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer Jeannine Aversa, Ap Economics Writer 26 mins ago

WASHINGTON – The economy shifted to a higher gear in the spring, growing at its fastest pace in nearly a year as foreign buyers snapped up U.S. exports and tax rebates spurred shoppers at home.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that gross domestic product, or GDP, increased at a 3.3 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. The revised reading was much better than the government's initial estimate

of a 1.9 percent pace and exceeded economists' expectations for a 2.7 percent growth rate...

Meanwhile, back in the Obama camp:...Oh great! What domestic calamity can we hysterically scream about now?!

How conveniently you ignore the FACT that while GDP grew last quarter, it has DECLINED in the previous three.

Most sane people consider this "making up lost ground".

If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error. ~~~John Kenneth Galbraith

True - But Obama Would Make Worse

That's true. It's also true that economists quoted in the article state that last quarter's upturn does not necessarily portend a consistent improvement in the economy from this point forward. But this trend is how most economic downturns go, consisting of a drop, hitting bottom, leveling off, having sporadic increases for a time, followed by a steady upturn - driven by the lower prices of our goods (because of a weak dollar) in comparison to imports, causing other countries to purchase our goods over others.

An Obama administration would throttle this trend by increasing taxes and government spending well over current amounts, causing the money supply to diminish, interest rates to rise, and capital investment and comsumer purchasing (both of which are inextricably tied to the cost of money, i.e. loans) - the life blood of our economy - to constrict. All of this would lead to shrunken economy - not an improved one - with all the job loss that goes with it, especially in an economic downturn, like we've had.

Okay, 'splain this one to me wee one ...

Why is it that after a RePUBICon admuddlestration completely trashes the economy, it takes a DEMOCRATIC administration to clean up the mess? Now, why is that, tiny tike?

Think you can answer that one, sparky?

You're Right...

...Bush did increase spending in many areas, when he shouldn't have. So, knowing this, why would anyone in their right mind want to elect Barak Obama, who would increase spending well above that expended by Bush, and make this catastrophe even worse by increasing the overall tax burden and sucking capital out of the economy, which is needed to erase the downturn that we've been in? It makes no sense. But, I forget myself. I'm speaking with leftists, who are terribly crippled, when it comes to logic and common sense.

You must be getting horribly dizzy

...with all the spin you're applying.

You use the word "would" a great deal. That implies knowledge of future events and actions. You can, of course, provide a factual foundation for your assertions...actually, no, you can't. You're a RepubliCANT sheeple-troll, and FACTS are anathema to you. So you rely instead on the one tool that's kept Cowboy-hat Oathbreaker in power for the past seven years: fear. You've obviously forgotten that fear only works as a tool for maintaining control for a finite time span, after which it progresses into anger and resentment directed against those who caused and spread the fear (read: the RepubliCANTs).

Don't worry your little empty head...President Obama will have eight years in office to undo the damage that Cowboy-hat Oathbreaker has done to the United States. You won't have to fret anything, except perhaps the decline in value of your oil stock. Perhaps now is a good time to diversify your portfolio? There are some very promising solar-energy startups in the Southwest.

ROTFLMAO

That has got to be ONE of THE MANY most moronic, idiotic and FACTUALLY INCORRECT posts you've shared, tiny tike! Perhaps you should THINK before you post!

So, child - if that's your take, how do you explain why it takes a DEMOCRATIC administration to fix a REPUBLICAN administration's fuck-ups?

Logic? Common sense? You don't even know what those words mean, SHIThead! I will tell you this - those are two attributes that have NOT made it into the RePUBICon dictionary! LOL!

First,

we stop spending billions in Iraq. Then we stop giving billions to oil companies that are making record billions in profits. Then we stop the no-bid contractors who are over-charging the government. I've given you three ways just off the top of my head and I haven't even read Obama's economic plan.

It's amazing how you bring up logic and common sense when you clearly know nothing about either.

OH BULLSHIT!

This is the Thirties all over again.

Deregulation has allowed you thieves to act LIKE COMMON CRIMINALS AND STEAL EVERYTHING THERE IS TO STEAL.

GUESS WHAT!... You know why you're going to have to pay more taxes??... BECAUSE YOU'VE TAKEN ALL THE MONEY!

What do you suggest, skeeter??... What would YOU do with a $10,000,000,000,000 debt SHITHEAD??... THAT'S A LOT OF FUCKING ZEROS.

=======================

I've said it before. Barak Obama is going to be the greatest president since Franklin Delanoe Roosevelt.

He's going to lead us out of the MULTI-GENERATIONAL CLUSTER-FUCK YOU ASSHOLES HAVE PUT US IN.

=======================

Simple economics:

Give a poor man a dollar and he will spend it... spend it with the Butcher... who will spend it with the Baker... who will spend it with the Candle-Stick Maker...

Give a wealthy man a dollar and.. well... he'll have another dollar.

The lower down the economic ladder you inject money, the more economic stimulus you get... "more bang for the buck".

Hey skeeter!... Your way of life IS OVER!... GET OUT YOUR FUCKING CHECKBOOK... TIME TO PAY FOR YOUR SINS.

You're Right...
...Bush did increase spending in many areas, when he shouldn't have. So, knowing this, why would anyone in their right mind want to elect Barak Obama,

Listen to yourself. Clinton balanced the budget and paid down debt. Reagan, Bush Sr and Bush Jr all spent like mad. How can you justify your statement? You have no ground to stand on.

Because Obama will spend wisely and where it's needed

Not because he feels like illegally invading a country or giving his oil buddies tax breaks during record profits or huge tax breaks to the top 1% with a smidgen for the lower 99% or giving no-bid, cost-plus contracts to companies who overcharge the government $40 for a $5 towel, not to mention electrocute our soldiers, or give $100,000 tax breaks to small businesses to buy an SUV while taking away the piddly $2,000 tax break to people who buy a high-mileage hybrid or funnel billions of dollars into the energy industry while ignoring global warming or alternative energy.

Going back to your inaccurate use of "logic" and "common sense", which you still know nothing of either, how can Democrats be stupid and elitist at the same time?
That's illogical. That makes no sense. That's you.
Oh, by the way, if people were to read your post grammatically, they would think you are inferring that all leftists are terribly crippled. Your sentence, in and of itself, makes no sense. Do you have any clue as to how to place commas? Once again, SMACK!

HEY!! SHYTHEAD! Why haven't you answer my question?

Well, I know why, my wee little child - because you CAN'T. How does one refute FACT? Lesson, junior - you CAN'T.

LOL - you come here like you're an intellect, spouting mindless drivel that amounts to nothing more than psycho-babble. Proving once again, what an unstable, unhappy little boy SHYThead is.

Thank's for proving - AGAIN - what an insignificant little turd you are ...

Umm...no.

Look at the last four Presidencies.

One Democrat...and the economy blossomed under his leadership.
Three RepubliCANTs...and the economy has tanked worse with each one.

One Democrat...and he left office with the United States enjoying the first budget surplus in decades.
Three RepubliCANTs...and each one left office with a larger budget deficit.

The American people are learning that when a RepubliCANT says he's (or she's) a "fiscal conservative," they should run, not walk, to the nearest exit.

*POP* ...and another line of g0p sophistry receives a sharpened stick to the underbelly. Good thing the convention's next week...I hope your vendor has some fresh stock on hand. You're going to need it.

Please, please, tell me how Obama getting rid of the Bush

tax cuts that Crash McGrandpa strenuously opposed (until he started running for president) will throttle the economy. Better yet, tell me how Crash's plan to get rid of the whole $18 billion in earmarks while adding $1 trillion in new tax cuts and spending increases will actually help the economy.

I guess repub math is still as bad as it was under Raygun. Here's a clue: If you cut income by $1 trillion, and add spending cuts of $18 billion, you still come out an extra $982 billion in the red. So, rather than balancing the budget, as Crash claims he will do, it will actually vastly increase the budget deficit, hence, the national debt.

Repubs are always bad for the economy. They don't like to pay for their spending, prefering to foist that off on future administrations and generations.
