Rachel Maddow in the New York Times

She appeared on her way to a career as an AIDS-policy advocate when a funny thing happened: on a lark she auditioned to be the news reader and sidekick on a wacky FM morning radio program in the area. She got the job, which had her occasionally donning an inflatable calculator costume at a local Ford dealer. She acknowledged that the work was not exactly what she had in mind when she graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in public policy and from Oxford University, which she attended on a Rhodes Scholarship and where she earned her doctorate.

In 2004 she somehow parlayed her varied academic and drive-time radio experiences into a job as a co-host on a new morning program on Air America. That put her onto the booking lists of any number of cable news programs desperate for a fresh liberal voice.

“If you want a left-right fight, in 2004 or today, there’s this roster of dozens, if not hundreds, of conservative talk-show hosts to book,” she said. “On the left there’s Alan Colmes. Oh, wait a minute, he’s taken. I think I got booked, initially, by default.”

Rachel is without doubt the best host on AAR

and I truly enjoyed her time hosting Countdown. She is intelligent, witty, and easily able to destroy neocons without resorting to shouting and namecalling like her opponents. It must be frustrating for repubs to have to deal with her when their "front line" consists of known fools like Rush, Hannity, North, and Bill-O.

I think that is the core of exactly why she is such a great host, be it radio or television. All one really needs are the facts, and she has the rare talent to deliver those concisely and with clarity. I don't know if it's still on, but David Gregory was (is?) hosting a show called "Race for the Whitehouse" (or something like that...) on MSNBC. There was a segment where he had on two 'righties' and two 'lefties'. One of the 'lefties was Rachel, and one of the 'righties was Pat Buchannan. He was clearly frustrated by her, because though he is very good at delivering republican talking points, she'd always shoot them down with facts. Facts that most tend to forget amongst all the other outrages foisted on us by this administration, but she was quick to recall and remind. That's just great stuff!

In fact, my neighbor's husband had a crush on her from watching her appearances with KO. He was *very* disappointed when he found out he wasn't her type at all. He had no way of knowing because Rachel doesn't focus on her sex life when she's working - just like any other professional broadcaster.

The interviewer brought it up - not Rachel.

It's all about money

It has nothing to do with "conserative media". Businesses pay huge amounts of money for advertising time during his show because he has millions of listeners. Thats why he is the highest paid personality on the radio. He has millions of listeners because millions of people agree with him. What does that say about air america??? Liar!

NOW, Phil Donohue had the highest rated show on msnbc and it got pulled when he started disparaging the Iraq war. THAT was censorship which the fairness doctrine would have PROTECTED him from.

Is that these slimeballs perpetuate themselves (and their advertisers) by constantly putting down education and the people who have it. And continue to listen to AAR mostly because of Rachel. She is far and away the best thing to come out of the whole Air America experiment.

The people who took a chance on this relative unknown four years ago should pat themselves on the back for an excellent decision.

Those at the helm of AAR who chose to keep her on board should be congratulated for at least one smart move (setting aside the boneheadedness of the Morning Sedition and Sam Seder moves).

When Rachel Maddow's career takes her away from the radio machine to the toob, I will always remember how it all started - with a cranky, shaky liberal oasis in a sea of right wing wackos.

Rachel is one of the most intelligent commentators in today's media. Air America has a true gem, and hopefully NBC will wise up soon and offer her a show of her own. Her blunt honesty about what is going on in our government is refreshing, and she can do it with a sense of humor.

And by the way, her pride is one of the greatest things about Rachel, keep it up!

Rachel Maddow is one of the few people on radio and TV, when she appears, who makes sense. She is intelligent, attractive, sometimes funny, and knows what she is talking about. MSNBC, do yourselves a favor and give her a permanent spot or show of her own. Thanks to KO for recognizing her talent.

It seems she is the only one on AAR weekdays from the original line-up who is left holding the ball. Its too bad AAr couldn't keep a good thing going with Franken, Rhodes and Seder as well as Maddow.....now That was some good radio!

1. Rachel, why is there little coverage of Pickens's statement that we can't drill our way out of this one? Why has not one analyst put McCain on the spot about this truth?

2. Football is on when Obama gives acceptance speech, so, why not do 30sec. or even 1/2 spots of Him saying to the Football Fan Community, "I know you're watching football as i accept the Nomination for President, but don't let any game keep you from casting your vote in November." OR even a direct feed to the speech, or a tape-delay of an edited high-point....

Just seems like a good way to wisely spend some TV time....

I've been listening to AAR almost since its inception and I've heard Rachel on all the various incarnations of her show and its predecessors. Rachel is the sharpest person on the network and one of the smartest pundits around.
Good work Rachel and thanks for helping to beat down the talking point spewing right. (I don't know how you can keep your head from exploding while on "Road to the White House". Some of your colleagues are wildly drunk on right-wing kool-aid.)

Something must be done!

Something must be done to help these poor people. The price of a barrel of oil has dropped drastically in the past few days (thanks to Bush for lifting drilling bans) and speculators have lost MILLIONS of dollars. If we bail out housing speculators (people that buy a house in hopes that it will be worth more down the road), we must bail out oil speculators as well! Something needs to be done to recover my...I mean their money! Does anyone know of a petition I can sign to help these poor people?

We can compare degrees, but we should compare broadcast awards too. I doubt she has a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for excellence in broadcast under her belt!

If you'd ever bothered going to a REAL educational institution, you'd know that rote learning is something that ends in grade school. By the time you're doing post-grad work, all you're doing is critical thinking, and learning to back your arguments with FACTS...something you RepubliCANTs are obviously incapable of at a genetic level.

Most intelligent people prefer to hear someone speaking on a topic that they have more than passing interest in and knowledge of. That lets you completely out when it comes to politics, obviously.

Many of these college university stations would seem to be an alternative to the programmed, mass distributed garbage we get. Unfortunately the few I've listened to do not seem to have much creativity. They play bad music that isn't main stream and they think it is being counter culture. I'd like some good music that isn't mainstream?

They're mostly NOT in CA

At least two of the college stations around where I live and teach, are, no shit, automated adult contemporary. Remember when the college stations were the place for edgy new bands to be discovered? Now they're playing Kenny G without even any students running the place!

KUCI in Irvine is still pretty interesting music-wise, but they're very very full of themselves.

Several thousand people watched as the man under the red, white and blue parachute landed on the 30-member band, about 45 metres off target. A gasp went up from the crowd, followed by silence as at least a dozen people rushed over to help.

"I hear, 'Oh, expletive,' and immediately, I hear a crash,"' said the band's commander, Chief Warrant Officer Scott MacDonald.

The three injured band members were treated and released from Irwin Army Community Hospital. The parachutist, Scott Hallock, refused treatment at the scene.

"We know that they're going to be all right," said Gen. Charles Campbell, head of the Army's Forces Command, during opening remarks.

Two tubas were destroyed, Keating said. MacDonald said a trumpet was also damaged.

In a speech given Friday morning in Minneapolis, Gary Stern, the regional Fed president, said the current excesses in residential construction, housing market decline, and credit crunch all resemble the "headwinds" environment that prevailed 17 years ago.

If that is the case, the economy may be in a slump for some time.

"While such an environment will not be permanent, it could well persist for an extended period," said Stern.

I think people are a little too optimistic. A while back they were arguing about whether it was a recession or not. Now it's the worst in 17 years. But they still tell us it's going to be fine. but they are about to bail out banks by printing more money and devaluing the dollar.

Talk radio has always been

Talk radio has always been dominated by conservatives due to the conservative bent of most corporations. And today, it also thrives more with conservatives because more older people use radio as their main political town hall. Younger demographics focus more on blogs and other internet sites for their political fix.

That doesn't mean, of course, that Air America can't get it's voice out there as well, with quality radio programming and hosts like Rachel.

I hope that if Rachel Maddow gets a gig on a cable news network, that she also maintains a radio presence like Hannity and Limbaugh do. We need our voices on all media formats. If the echo chamber works for conservatives, it will work for progressives as well. We might as well use their own tactics against them.
