Trawling the wild web
You know, it's interesting: McCain releases an attack ad, and the media reports its content like it's news - and doesn't bother to get any rebuttal from the Obama team. I just can't imagine the same thing happening if Obama released an attack ad. You just know there'd be plenty of rebuttal from Republicans being reported, probably in great (and fallacious) detail.
The electoral-vote map shows Obama with Nevada and Montana, now, and North Dakota in play, with McCain's support weakening in South Dakota. (In fact, McCain has been weakening in quite a few of the southern states, although they haven't moved over to blue.) On the other hand, although Ohio and PA are still blue, they're still not as blue as I'd like - and Rassmussen is showing McSame ahead in Ohio, which is pretty worrying. Now, understand, it's early days and all that, but if the polls show McCain close or leading in these important states, that makes the election a lot easier for Republicans to steal. And Ohio is a pretty big state to lose (and Nevada and ND don't make up for it, either.)
Sarah Wildman in the Guardian on "The global war on sex education: In the US and abroad, the Bush administration has severely restricted women's access to contraception." As Scott Lemieux reminds us, the Global Gag Rule was the first things Bush did when he took occupation of the White House, and McShame is likely to continue this war, too.
I think the trouble with Jesse's analysis is that if I want to know what racists are thinking, it's useful to listen to the actual racists. (via)
Apparently, Jonathan Alter regards it as a sign of affection when J. Sidney McSame calls him a jerk.

It's the teenage daughter of a friend of mine. She has a pretty severe case of Asperger Syndrome, so I guess she's one of those brats who just needs a good slap from Dear Old Dad. She's also a second degree black belt in Korean mixed martial arts. I'd love to see her squash Weiner like a grape.

Like most conservatives he talks all badass when he is nice and safe behind his microphone but he is about as dangerous as a bowl of Jello out on the street. The mere threat of physical violence would probably reduce him to the pissing, shivering, whining little worm that he is.

By MichtouJuly 23, 2008 - 10:14amLose Ohio, Win White House
Would it be nice to win Ohio? Sure.
Would it be preferable to win Ohio? Sure.
Would it be necessary to win Ohio to win the White House? Nope.
I am convinced that the road to the White House travels through different states on the map than we have become accustomed to over the past decade or so. We ought not get locked into the "FL, OH, PA" type of mindest that has guided recent elections.
We should be thinking outside of that box.
For example...
If we start with the basic assumption that Obama holds Kerry states and McSame holds Bush states, giving OH and FL to McSame and keeping PA with Obama, the road to the White House can travel through a number of other state combos... but I'm looking more at this one:
Flip IA, NM, CO and it's game, set, match...without Ohio... or Florida.
And that's before we even get into discussing add-ons like VA... NV, MT, ND...
It could very well be a blowout.

Obama really needs to stop embracing far-right policies that everyone hates before he loses the blue states as well.
The only thing that's saving him is that McCain keeps running around embracing them even more.

By SJerseyIndyJuly 23, 2008 - 11:15amNow Don't go jumping on me,
I was listening to the Brewers game and then the post game stuff, when Savage came on. I knew nothing about his comments before because I don't normally listen to him. I'm curious, did any of you hear his initial comments live or are you getting the info second hand. I did listen to his explanation last night. He basically threw a number out, because he believes that there a many misdiagnosed cases of Autism. There are no blood tests, just subjective views of behavior that are extremely broad. He mentioned some kind of guidelines that included things like: If your kid lines objects up on a regular basis, they might have Autism. Some sounded pretty broad to me. He also had some doctor that claimed that many in the medical field believe that as high as 60% of the cases are misdiagnosed. He claims his real belief is that some people in the medical field are in league with big Pharma, and are over diagnosing things like ADD and Autism in order to make money. I agree with that to a point. I think there are way to many kids on some pretty powerful drugs, at extremely young ages, because they act up and the parents look for an easy fix (Rx), instead of parenting.
BTW, Savage also said that he had a young brother that was severely disabled and died at a young age. I guess that would give him some pretty good first hand knowledge in dealing with disabled kids and I'm pretty sure that he wasn't ridiculing any kids with disabilities.
Just my .02.

Have you ever known a kid with autism? Like I said I know personaly of two of them. It is a shame of what he said about them, and YES I took it personaly because I know what this is, and watching the parents tears because their child is a prisoner in their own mind, and when this numb nuts said what he did it made me mad and upset. So please don`t take this man`s word and the content and say that he didn`t mean it. Because not only did he insult the kids with autism but also the parents that try to do the best that they can. Savage can personaly kiss my %$%. He is commiting a con on you and his listeners.

Since there are varying degrees of Autism, I wouldn't know. I do think that the disease is painted with a large brush stroke, and if I think back to my childhood, there were probably a couple of kids the today would be diagnosed with the disease. Back in the day, "Odd" kids were somewhat hidden and ignored.

By rlm_dcbJuly 23, 2008 - 3:34pmI know what the disease is and I have seen Autistic children.
I have been looking for the tape of the show, but from his written comments, he comes across as an idiot and threw out a number off the top of his head that was way to high. Upon reading some of the blogs, there were experts that did agree with his statement that there are many kids that are misdiagnosed and that treating the disease is expensive.
I am very suspicious of some of these diagnoses that doctors throw out on kids and then put them on $300/M worth of drugs that turn the kid into a zombie.
My best guess is that there are many cases of Autism that are misdiagnosed and treated with drugs instead of parenting and there are probably a lot of true Autistic kids that are not diagnosed, and get the crap slapped out of them when they act up. Now that sucks.

Autism is not a disease it is a CONDITION. A disease can be cured. Autism has no drugs to help with the condition that these kids are in. Like I said earlier I know because a friend of mine`s step daughter and my ex girlfriend both have kids with this conditon. Neither one of these kids take drugs for autism, but my ex`s little one does take drugs for m.s., and if you see one of the young kids with this remember that they prefer the same thing over and over again. I know because both of them like it when I play music for them.

By rlm_dcbJuly 23, 2008 - 4:25pmHmmm...
There is NO medication for any form of autism. One thing that is true, not necessarily about autism but psychology in general, is that we as a society are over-medicated. As soon as a kid acts like a normal active kid in school, some principals, counselors, etc., put pressure on the parents to put the child on Ritalin. Because someone is not all happy-smiley at work ALL the time, the boss makes them go to a shrink, who immediately prescribes conformity pills (Zoloft and its evil spawn). We live in a society that turns difference into a disease, but that was still no excuse for Weiner's inaccurate and insensitive comments.

Of the two kids I know that has autism only one has meds for something, but it is not for autism it is flexiril for the muscle spasms that she has with the m.s. but that is all. Now for the A.D.D. I have noticed that a change in diet does better then any of the pills ever do. By taking alot of the processed sugar out of their diet helps alot. I know because my little brother has A.D.D. and that is how my mom controled it.

By hufflarry2000July 23, 2008 - 3:09pmI have to say that I listened to the portion that was talked
about and it was pretty offensive. If Savage is going to be a radio talk show host, he should do a much better job of communicating his point of view than he did in this case.
I honestly don't know enough about autism to say if he may be right on this or not. I do know that probably way too many kids are diagnosed with ADHD, for a variety of reasons. In fact, they are now diagnosing adults with ADHD, and prescribing medication for their "problem". It wouldn't surprise me at all that big pharma encourages this.
That being said, I go back to my initial point, that Savage does a poor job of communicating his point of view, considering that is what he is paid to do. On the other hand, he is the equivalent of a shock jock, and so it's his stock and trade to say controversial, offensive things in order to bring in listeners to hear the train wreck take place.

It's one thing if they are trying to explain a position of some sort, but annoying people just for the sake of annoying them and making money is just plain stupid. Like I told fu the other day, I heard Mr.Weiner state a couple of months ago that the problem with Iraq was that we weren't killing enough civilians to show them that we mean business. He was advocating a Dresden style fire bombing of a major Iraqi city.
I listen to him almost every night even though he almost makes me physically ill sometimes. Keep in mind that there are surely many more like me the next time that asshole starts touting his listener numbers. Ya gotta keep your ears on the enemy.
