Only as tall as we stand
400,000 terrorists? "After having begun a series of investigative stories criticizing the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in May 2008, CNN reporter Drew Griffin reports being placed with more than a million other names on TSA's swollen terrorism watch list. Although TSA insists Griffin's name is not on the list and pooh-poohs any possibility of retaliation for Griffin's negative reporting, the reporter has been hassled by various airlines on 11 flights since May. The airlines insist that Griffin's name is on the list. Congress has asked TSA to look into the tribulations of this prominent passenger." Really? Congress is just now asking, after years of harassment of innocent people - including one of their own members? It's not as if this story is news - early on, we recall the story of a member of Ralph Nader's presidential campaign (and not someone with a particularly Muslim name) who mysteriously found his ability to fly being curtailed in 2002 because he was "on the list". Everyone named David Nelson (including Rick's brother), has had the same problem. And does "Ted Kennedy" sound like the name of a Muslim terrorist? The old German Jews who helped raise and educate me are all dead, now, but I know exactly what they'd say about governments that make lists of people who it's okay to harass. Thom Hartmann discussed just this process in the first hour of his show, yesterday.
"Slammed: Welcome to the Age of Incarceration [...] We treat 10-year sentences like they're nothing, like that's a soft penalty, when in much of the rest of the world a decade behind bars would be considered extraordinarily severe. This is what separates us from other industrialized countries: It's not just that we send so many people to prison, but that we keep them there for so long and send them back so often. Eight years ago, we surpassed Russia to claim the dubious distinction of having the world's highest rate of incarceration; today we're still No. 1." It's also the most expensive way to run a criminal justice system, just in terms of the sheer dollars wasted on keeping people imprisoned, and never mind the many, many costs in families destroyed, crime increased rather than reduced, and whole neighborhoods disrupted. (Via Cursor.)
Digby warns that falling for Mukasey's gambit would be "a political mistake of epic proportions [...] setting the table for possible decades of being pressured and intimidated into supporting wars and military interventions against the best interests of the country and the world --- not to mention their own political interests. It is not a winner for liberals to help the conservatives pursue their imperial goals. There's no political need for this, so if they do it, one can only assume it's because they actually support the Orwellian concept of endless war." (And wow, dday says that McShame even managed to lose Joe Klein.)
Mukasey's antics inspire more signs that Steve Soto has lost his patience: "For years now, all Leahy and Schumer needed to do was throw the Senate GOP's attacks against Janet Reno's alleged lack of independence back into their faces, and demand to know what's different now. But that would require guts and brains, and since Schumer and Leahy are part of the same vile Beltway party as the GOP, it's a moot point." (Also: Blood for Oil - Once dismissed as a "conspiracy theory", it's now an in-your-face fact.)

By nonexistent manJuly 24, 2008 - 9:44pmMcCain will never be president, but even if repubs find a way to
rig yet another election, even the repubs have given up on holding on to the seats they have in congress. Repub strategists expect to lose seats in the senate and the house, so a McCain administration would not have the veto-proof majority that Bush enjoyed for his first 6 years. Considering the fact that even a lot of repubs don't like McCain because they think he isn't "conservative" enough, and the fact that many of his repub colleagues in the senate don't like him, I would expect that a hypothetical McCain presidency would be a series of humiliating failures and defeats for any legislation he wanted to pass that was in the least bit offensive to congress.

By LiberalIconoclastJuly 24, 2008 - 12:39pmI honestly doubt he will get the chance to steal it without
an overwhelming amount of support from the MSM. Even the small amount of coverage he has gotten so far has exposed him as an ignorant, clueless old man who can't speak for more than a minute without making some embarrassing gaffe. The only way he has a chance is if the media totally ignores him, or does nothing but glowing stories about him while totally trashing Obama. It would have to be effective enough to make the race closer than it is now, so that vote rigging on Diebold machines can do the rest of the work.
I think before that happens, something would be done to boost his chances of winning. The number one contender is an attack on Iran, probably by Israel launching a first attack on its own. The US would then support them with its own strikes, perhaps on the pretext of "protecting" Israel from any possible counterattack.

By UffdaguyJuly 24, 2008 - 12:50pmVote McCain?
McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of his class at the Navel Academy. You can proudly watch him announce it on Youtube in the same smart aleck way that Bush did when he told the graduating class at Harvard, “You don’t need A’s. Look at me, I got C’s and I’m president.”
Some reports listed McCain’s graduating class at 599, others at 899. 899 would be way worse than 599. Don’t cha think?
That’s what comes of the sons of the elite, one from a former president, the other an admiral, getting into places based on the rich person’s Affirmative Action, “family connections”.
Finally, we have a real person who made it on their own smarts and the right hates him because, take a pick:
He’s black
His name is funny
He’s not white
He’s too smart
The right attempts to take this family man, who wants to raise his children in a strong and safe country and turn him into an anti-American violent extremist.
Obama isn’t the risk, it’s John McCain who is the risk.

if somehow McCrash does win, we're going to be thanking Hillary, huff and friends until we sink their chances again in 2012.

Obama lost Ohio, PA, Mi and FL in landslides in the primaries.. Dont you think he would have beat Hillary in the primary if he was gonna beat McCain? You have no idea what goes on here. We DID NOT want Obama as the nominee. What makes you think that in racist OH, MI and PA that Obama will defeat McCain when he lost to Hillary in landslides, you jackass?

By hufflarry2000July 25, 2008 - 3:19amYour constant whining is starting to annoy us.
She LOST, fair and square...the DNC made sure about the "fair" part. Crying about it months after the fact changes nothing.
If you're so gung-ho about supporting cheaters, feel free to vote for any RepubliCANT candidate you wish.

By nonexistent manJuly 25, 2008 - 5:24amIs the pResident on the "terrorist watch list"?
Has anyone bothered to check? Can anyone even check?
I mean, here's a guy who:
A) was Governor when senior Taliban officials came to Texas for high level talks with Unocal about a pipeline through Afghanistan
B) gave a gift of $43 million to the Taliban almost immediately upon occupying the White House
C) has ties to family members of the leader of an organization supposedly responsible for the 9/11 attacks who is harbored by the Taliban
D) pledged $3 billion in to Pakistan and a leader who everyone openly admits harbors the man supposedly responsible for 9/11
And that's just for starters as a few examples off the top of the head.
Surely one of those should serve as a red flag of sorts.

Yes, those things are all suggestive. But clearly the man has never been on the Peace Train, so he checks out.

By Dr_BillionaireJuly 24, 2008 - 11:54amMore good news for Obama
Obama has now gotten the latino vote that he didn't get in the primaries. In fact, the newest Pew poll shows he is more popular with latinos than Hillary was. It appears increasingly likely that McCain won't even be able to carry his home state of Arizona, something repubs were so gleeful about when Gore didn't carry TN in his presidential bid. November can't come soon enough. If dems thought November 2006 was great, just wait until this coming November! Let the electoral massacre of repubs begin!

We are already starting to get senator Clinton elected in 2012. Why you elected McCain is beyond me.
