Strange brew

John McCain has said and done so many ridiculous things in the last week that I honestly can't keep track of them all.

Don't you find it interesting that when a genuine Al Qaeda hard man who was in US custody was identified, they let him go? It's funny how people who were close to bin Laden seemed to be the people who were the least interesting to our leaders and their minions. Or maybe it's not all that surprising considering that the people who are closest to them are actually in the Republican leadership and the White House.

Joseph Stiglitz says just say no to free lunches for Fannie and Freddie's management, shareholders and bondholders.

Fox news asks some interesting poll questions.

J Street has just released a poll showing that most American Jews do not support insane Likudnik/Lieberman/Bush policies for Israel. (And Lieberman apparently supports terrorists.)

Obama is not only going to clean grandpa's clock, he's also going to have an even bigger dem majority in congress. He will pick several new Supreme Court justices, ensuring a liberal majority for decades to come.

Stealing other people's wealth? Yep, that's what repubs have been doing for years, stealing wealth from the lower and middle classes and giving it to the ultrarich. Stealing from the employees and shareholders of Enron to give to Kenny Boy Lay and other Bush cronies. Stealing from every person who buys gas in order to enrich the execs at Exxon Mobil and other big oil companies. Stealing from the taxpayer to hand over to Halliburton and Blackwater and Custer Battles, often for substandard work or work that wasn't done at all. Stealing from the taxpayer to give to defense contractors for weapons systems that are useless against terrorists, such as the F-22. Stealing from future generations by adding over $4 trillion dollars to the national debt in the past 6 years, so that interest payments on the debt are now the 4th largest spending category in the budget.

You have tremendous gall, and even more tremendous ignorance to even dare suggest that dems are going to steal other people's hard-earned money. It is repub policies, brought to a head under the present administration, that represents theft on a historic scale. Anyone who calls themselves a repub and supports their policies should hang their head in shame and beg for forgiveness from the American public. I'll give you a moment to do some research into this question

Which party has run up the biggest budget deficits in US history?

Ready? It's........the repubs!

The largest budget deficits in history have all been during the reign of George W. Bush. The repub-controlled congress approved every one of those record deficits, refusing to make any real cuts in the submitted budget.

The second largest deficits were run up by George H.W. Bush, who had been the largest deficit-monger until his son took over.

The third largest deficits were run up by Ronnie Raygun, whose deficits were expected to remain as records for decades to come. Just shows you should never underestimate the Bush family when it comes to destroying the American economy.

Now, for the second question. Which party last submitted a balanced budget and actually produced a budget surplus. Maybe even you can remember that one. It was the democrats, and Bill Clinton who did that.

So, what is the difference between repubs and dems? Dems are responsible in their spending, and they make sure that tax revenues are close to what is being spent. They even worked under the paygo plan during the Clinton era. Only when Bush slithered into office was that abandoned. Then the repub spending procedure took over: spend like a drunken sailor, run up the deficit, and make sure that future generations get to pay for it. Takes real talent to add over $4 trillion to the national debt in only 6 years. In fact, you have to be really talented to almost singlehandedly double the national debt in 6 years, which is what Bush and the repubs have done.

The moral of the story? Never, ever let repubs control the nation's budget ever again. We literally can't afford it.

In 1980

RWR the first Repug Messiah promised to balance the Federal budget by 2004. In the 2004 campaign he claimed he never promised that, after he had more than tripled the national debt.

Now GWB aka Chimpy does the same thing.

Isn't it amazing that despite all the Repugs' bluster about "Tax and Spend Democrats," it's the Dems (Kennedy, Johnson, and Clinton) who balance budgets while Repugs just increase the tab and pass it on to our grandchildren?

I would say that the tax and spend bullshit is just a

smokescreen to let repubs try and hide their own fiscal mismanagement. At every level of government, from local to state to federal, they play the same game. They cut taxes, usually on just the rich, run up big deficits, and then get thrown out of office. Dems clean up the mess by raising taxes to pay off the deficits, put together balanced budgets, and get the financial house back in order. Repubs use this against them in the next election cycle, claiming taxes are too high. They get voted back in, and the whole vicious cycle begins again.

I think we need two constitutional amendments:

1. No one in the Bush family should ever be allowed to be president again. The trillions in debt they ran up give us trillions of reasons to pass such an amendment.

2. Repubs should never be allowed to control the purse strings. Their obvious inability to understand the difference between a surplus and a deficit makes them mentally incapable of running a lemonade stand, much less the US economy,

Obama beats McCain 10 to 1 in Donations from Expats in Europe

Obama beats McCain in Europe donations
By GREGORY KATZ, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jul 25, 2:56 AM ET

LONDON - Barack Obama's campaign has received roughly 10 times more money from declared U.S. donors living in Germany, France and Britain than his Republican rival, reflecting his popularity in Europe as he makes his first tour of the continent as the presumed Democratic nominee.

Federal Election Commission reports show Obama has raised at least $1 million from donors who identify themselves as Americans living in Great Britain, Germany and France, while John McCain has taken in at least $150,000.

Some donors say the huge disparity, which also exists in overall funding raising in which Obama has raked in $338 million to $126.3 million for McCain, is more about disliking Bush and the prospect of another Republican succeeding him than it is an affection for Obama.

"I contributed because of the absolutely appalling performance of the Bush administration during the last eight years," said Eileen Taylor, a chief operating officer for Deutsche Bank in London.

She made two $2,300 donations, the maximum allowed, and is also working on a voter registration drive to make it easier for Americans abroad to cast ballots in the November election.

"We're actively signing people up to vote," she said. "Democrats Abroad is working with a lot of companies to set up voter registration and absentee ballots. The key message is that it's not about the money. A lot of people are putting emotional energy into this campaign."

Only U.S. citizens are permitted to contribute to presidential campaigns. The European totals include contributions of $200 or more from each individual as election laws do not require campaigns to itemize lesser amounts. So it's possible Obama has received additional money from smaller donors. McCain, however, publishes all contributions, even amounts smaller than $200.

While Bush is unpopular at home, hostility to the outgoing president appears to be much deeper among expatriate donors than the general population in the United States. Obama's many backers in Europe say they are motivated by a yearning for America to once again be viewed with respect by the rest of the world.

[...]

The amounts raised in Europe are not terribly significant in the costly White House race, but the disparity between the two candidates underscores the Democratic candidate's appeal on a continent where Obamamania seems to have taken hold of expatriates and Europeans alike.

It also may reflect the Obama campaign's adroit use of the Internet as a prime fundraising tool while the McCain camp was for a long time saddled with a Web site that made it difficult for Americans abroad to contribute.

[...]

To say that I can relate to this would be a great understatment!

Are the foriegn lobbyists being counted? McCain lobbied the Air Force to sent 40,000 hi tech jobs to France for EADS. McCain was the first US candidate for anything that EADS gave money to.

From the stuff I've seen so far in this hearing I have enjoyed the chastising of congress for failing to do it's job the most. One individual pointed out that this same committee with some of the same members did it's job when it came to Nixon and failed with Bush.

There is a thread started on Malloy's board. On that board if you post, the thread stays at the top. This might be a good place to document impeachment news:

The real story behind Democratic Congress inaction

It's pretty clear the real reason the congress has shown a decided lack of enthusiasm in going up against this president. First, they may have a majority of votes, but not enough to override a presidential veto without bipartisan support. That, however, is not the real reason.

The Republican base still hasn't come to terms with the fact that Bush places his own narrow and short sighted concerns over the welfare of the country. McCain took a play right out of Bush's playbook that Obama places a few votes over the good of the US. No one has been better than the Republicans at playing the patriot card. They give the impression that they are such patriots, they can decide who isn't.

The Republicans have tricked the US into believing the Iraq war was about US safety. When that is questioned, the Republicans go right for the throat with, "You must be on their side", and "You support the terrorists".

Since 2004, the Christian population in Iraq has been "Halved". Where did they go? Are they still alive? Notice, the Republicans refuse to answer that. It is actually the biggest scandal of the war so far. Neither the plight of the Iraqi Christians nor the theocratic constitution of Iraq have been discussed. As long as the Republicans keep their desperate hold on the mic, the story will be the same. Obama is slowly loosening their grip one finger at a time, but it's hard work.

The democratic portion of congress is being careful and taking it slow. They don't want to galvanize the Republican base who prefer ideology over the welfare of the country.

It's funny, the Republican base view McCain as a hero and a "true" American. He graduated 5th from the bottom of his class. Privileged son of and Admiral. Married into money. Doesn't support any benefits for American GIs. Never had to work for a living. Religious affiliation unknown. Famous for having an incendiary temper. But is seen as "safe" and "experienced".

Obama on the other hand, right out of the "melting pot" half black, half white, single mother on food stamps, worked his way up the ladder without family connections, money came from books he wrote, worked at jobs where he wasn't elected (taught constitutional law at the university level), only paid off student loans a few years ago, family man married only once, a Christian and yet, Obama is the risk. Barrack Hussein Obama is the true American Success story, what this country is all about, and he is the risk. That is what the Republicans do. They take the truth and twist it and bend it and pretty soon, it's unrecognizable.
