Morning Roundup: Around the Web on Lemon Street

By Beau Friedlander

If you ever wondered why investors are allergic to profligate spending coupled with managerial inertia, take a look at Robert J Samuelson's superb op-ed in today's Washington Post, who argues that a bankrupt GM (and dark times like we've never seen) may be the silver bullet for our ailing economy (kinda sorta). Actually, he just outlines the terms of what might work using what hasn't worked as counterpoint.

Meanwhile the G20 vow to create some rules and stimulus and stuff so that things don't get worse when the bottom falls out.

Bloomberg seems to be suggesting a down day may be the way of things on the Street today.

Did you see Obama's first You Tube weekly address?

The Guardian has a good take on the Obama-60 Minutes interview and video after the jump.

The Wall Street Journal on the little middle-of-the-road think tank that Obama's tapping for talent in his new administration.

MyDD reports on a secret ballot (not so secret) that could remove Sen. Joe Lieberman from the chairmanships of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committees.

The vetting of Hillary for Secretary of State included a vetting of Bill according to the New York Times.

The Washington Times places the flashlight of media scariness under its newpaper-chin and says the GOP is no longer relevant. Boo!

bakashah!

Dem caucus ballot happening tomorrow.

Let me be the FRist! to say:
If you have yet to contact Dem Senators to express your opinion that Joe should be removed as chair of HSGA, do so now!

Thanks in advance.

No. Mo. Joe.

Lieberman & lost CEO's hitchhiking outa Vegas in their underwear

Oh, the poor babies...let us buy them a hand up, like they'd do for us, in their stead...

Let us hire the Clintons and Kissingasser, because they know all the rest of the deadbeat world leadership walking on loser highway in their shorts...

All of them have received healthy paychecks already, just to stand there for years, staring...picking their behinds...while this financial disaster crept up on them at snail speed. They are responsible for feeding it.

Samuelson on GM

Now there's an interesting apporach--let the market decide and force GM to scale back, improve management and production efficiencies, and start generating product that consumers want (with more fuel efficiency). Oh, and by the way, cut wages and benefits for current workers and pensions and other benefits for retirees.

Three guesses which approach the GM managment will take--and the first two don't count. My guess is that Mahogany Row at GM will continue to sport nine-figure compensation for its occupants while they cut the workers to the point of pain. And do you think the Hummer will cease to exist? Nahh. Mini-cars mean mini-profits. Keep building ocean liners, and the fuel economy be damned!

MIni cars mini profits

It's amazing how they don't get it. I wonder how many of those execs would trade the GM bottom line for the mini profits that Toyota has been generating on the mini cars they sell.

This is all about corporations stopping the 'New Hank Fords'

Do not let the new entrepreneurs, the new Wozniaks, the new Fords, the new Hewletts and Packards have any start up funds to build a better product out of their garage.

Leave no morsels for those mice...Corps don't want the little guy to have the same breaks they got. They were once little too, and the time is ripe...And they and Paulson, GM, and Palosi know it...

I like that Obama is going after OBL

I think he is making a mistake in saying we need to stabilize Afghanistan by sending in more troops.

If we want to help people there, give the innocent refugee status and get the hell out. Don't get bogged down there for 10 years. It won't work.

Hillary as secretary of state...

Why? Aren't there staff members of Albright's team who might be a good choice?

And I'm not arguing against Clinton because I'm anti-Clinton. I'm telling you that should Hillary leave the senate seat in NY you might see a republican win the seat. Believe it or not it wasn't the easiest win for her the first time around. Her opponent made a few mistakes that widen the lead towards the end.

Upstate NY has a lot of right wingers. Rudy is going to run for governor. He might win. And if that race coincides with the senate race, Rudy's popularity might help.

It was a very easy win for her.

It was a landslide. New York is now solid Dem and Rudy is not very popular. You dont have a clue. Your hatred of Hillary is affecting what is left of your sanity.

I voted for her when she first won that senate seat. I watched how close it was. Her opponent made a mistake during the debate. He walked up to her and got in her space. It appeared very threatening and from that point on the margin in the polls widened. It ended up being 55 to 43 percent.

Another factor was the change in candidate. Rudy was running pretty well against her. Then his cancer made him drop out and Lazio started out well against her.

Don't tell me I don't have a clue about NY. I was raised there. When I visited in October in upstate NY there were loads of McCain/Palin signs all over the place.

But I guess she would be good at the job of Secretary of State. She has been to 80 countries right? I mean that was a meaningless point to make for experience at being president. But it might help her as top diplomat. I just don't want to hear anymore made up stories about snipers.

60 minutes

I know he isn't president yet, but it was so REFRESHING to hear an intelligent, thoughtful and humble leader speak before the people.

I had almost forgotten what that was like!

-- Yes we DID!!!! --

Okay, ...Obama should have wise experienced heads about.

Its genius to bring in (a revetted) Bill Clinton back into recycled productivity.
Under the Obama filter.
Carter too (some humanitarian role...election department...HUD).
