Palin Pallin' around with PETA
Looks like plucky Sarah Palin is expanding her fan club from evangelicals to vegangelicals. Seriously, how could any animal rights activist not love the sight of Palin blathering to the press while a worker in blood-spattered overalls blithely slaughters turkeys a few feet away?
The media deemed it necessary to blur this bloody backdrop, in deference to the "unspoken covenant of ignorance" between consumers and the food industry that historian Ann Vileisis documents in Kitchen Literacy: How We Lost Knowledge of Where Food Comes From and Why We Need To Get It Back:
...we have ended up in the absurd situation today that most of us, as consumers, know very little about what we eat; and, sensing a "dark side" to our food production, many of us don't even want
to know.
So now the blogosphere's a-Twitter with talk about "turkey carnage" and the "surreal... gruesomeness going on over her shoulder".
But you could argue that Palin performed a public service, however inadvertently. Americans are totally in denial about the way our livestock live--and die. Can you imagine the Food Network ever allowing Rachel Ray to slaughter a chicken in front of a live audience and millions of viewers, the way Jamie Oliver did back in January? After electrocuting the chicken, he told the visibly shocked audience:
"As far as killing anything's concerned, it's never nice. I was trained to do it, I don't feel particularly good about this. But, I eat chickens, and I'm a chef."
As the New York Times noted:
Mr. Oliver said that he wanted people to confront the reality that eating any kind of meat involves killing an animal, even if it is done with a minimum of pain.
Michael Pollan took it upon himself to learn how to slaughter chickens because, as he wrote in The Omnivore's Dilemma:
It seemed to me not too much to ask of a meat eater, which I was then and still am, that at least once in his life he take some direct responsibility for the killing on which his meat-eating depends...
...In the end I personally killed a dozen or so chickens before moving on to try another station...I wasn't at it long enough for slaughtering chickens to become routine, but the work did begin to feel mechanical, and that feeling, perhaps more than any other, was disconcerting: how quickly you can get used to anything, especially when the people around you think nothing of it.
...In the end I personally killed a dozen or so chickens before moving on to try another station...I wasn't at it long enough for slaughtering chickens to become routine, but the work did begin to feel mechanical, and that feeling, perhaps more than any other, was disconcerting: how quickly you can get used to anything, especially when the people around you think nothing of it.
Sarah Palin clearly thought nothing of the fowl play taking place behind her, and why should she? She may be disconnected from the "fake" America, but as someone who's comfortable gutting a fish or field dressing a moose, she's more connected to the food chain than most. The fuss over this clucked-up photo op says as much about our own willful ignorance as it does about Palin's blasé embrace of topless turkeys.

EDIT: Did anyone else notice that the slaughter was being observed by the next slaughter victims? No kidding! There is a coop right on the other side of the contraption, that is filled with turkeys!

By roadgoddessNovember 22, 2008 - 12:51pmPalin Was Showing Off
She was telling us she isn't upset by carnage. She was placing herself to be the Annie Oakley of the 2012 presidential election...not afraid to do what's necessary to defend America. She''ll send America youth to their deaths, just like Chimpy Bush, with glee in her eye. She was making herself the darling of the NeoCons and the Bubbas who like to shoot at things that don't shoot back. And that mention of her kid in Iraq? That was "Hey I'm one of you..." even though her kid has probably been assigned to serve cocktails at headquarters in Baghdad by the Pentagon in order to avoid having a hair on his head harmed by anything unpleasant in Iraq.
I have come to the conclusion that everything this woman does is coldly calculated. I'm sure that she learned some bitter lessons from the VeePee campaign about preparedness (don't ignore the briefers when they tell you to read this 300-page binder before going on with Charlie or Katie), but I have no doubt that she feels that God wants her in the White House. I'm sure that Stevens' losing his seat was viewed by her and her faithful as God closing a door that would have led her down the wrong path.
This woman is psycho. We've got to send her back to political obscurity.

By Viv RichardsNovember 22, 2008 - 11:54amCome Back to Earth
I think a lot of people need to come back to Earth and reality. This is about survival of the fittest. Its not going to be nice. Man and other animals eat. Some of them eat meat. Its just life. Things are done differently today because of mass production and the large population, but its no different than what the caveman did. Should we now become vegetarians now, because we don't want to hurt the poor little animals. Eating meat is also a form of population control in some cases. I love animals just like the next guy. I don't want to see domesticated animals harmed and I don't want to see endangered species eliminated from the earth, but I'm realistic about survival. Let's all get a grip.

I agree with you to a certain extent. Becoming a vegetarian is not a completely objectionable idea. I love domestic animals ( four cats ) as well, and consume animals that are raised for that purpose. I quit eating veal years ago, when I discovered how they were raised. Cruelty should not be part of the raising and slaughter. In fact, if most people witnessed how chickens are raised and slaughtered, they would become vegetarians. A friend of mine raises chickens for a large distributor/processor. After a month or so, the chickens that are not a certain size are killed and burned so they won't consume feed that the faster growing birds will use ( this is mandated by the distributor). He once gave the condemned chickens away to some of his neighbors, but the distributor found out and threatened to shut him down, which would have caused him to lose the sizable investment he had in his operation.
Your post reminded me of an old one liner; "I love animals... they're delicious"!

By othelloNovember 22, 2008 - 2:19pm2 things are different than the Stone Age:
1) the animals ancient humans ate weren't filled with weird ass chemicals and hormones.
2) most modern humans are omnivores who prefer to eat meat they have not killed, which makes them a form of carrion eater like a vulture or a jackal.
You are better off killing and eating a wild animal or, if that is not practical, cutting way back on factory produced meat.

I was so into the turkey carnage, I forgot to mention Palin on my last post. She is totally brain dead. If she thinks its a good idea to be filmed and interviewed with the turkey carnage in the back drop she's got problems. I say let the Republicans push her out on stage for 2012 so that the Democrats have another land slide victory on the next election. With her running, they don't have a chance.

All Obama will have to do is assure that the moderator is able to ask follow-on questions. Looks like Obama, God willing, will enjoy eight years as a DC resident. And hopefully the 2012 election map will be as lopsided as Johnson-Goldwater in 1964.

By blogbobNovember 23, 2008 - 6:51pmWhoa... Stories sticking to her huh?
This turned into just a long rolling bit as I wrote it but what the fuck. Just, hack and chew and claw your way through this jungle of blog as best you can.
So her trying to seem like, I dont know. I guess, I think she was trying to appeal to farmers, and ranchers, and the Joe "Mr. Macho gun nut killer" types. I guess she assumes since theyre Evangelicals gut nuts, they must automatically be Daniel Boone/Davy Crockett moose killers too? Joe Grizzley Adams? na, shes not out of touch...
Sure. Reminds me of that whole Richard Nixon campaigne SNAFU when Agnew gave a speech on the cow kill floor of a McDonalds Rendering plant that cost them the election back in 196whatevr... Oh wait, no I dont, cause no one would ever be stupid enough to do that. Save for, whoever coordinates her press opts, interviews and backrounds for such. Didnt she just get into trouble for Greta Van Sustersomething interviewing her in her office which turns out to be an ethics violation of her using State Resources for political gain? And its probably her herself making these desiscions, but whoever let this happen is the dumbest political anything ever...
But I dont even think even the rightiest, of right wing neocons appriciated her forcing all of them who saw the interview, while their little neocon kids were in the room, who had to explain what was going on, when little Jimmy Bob or Jesse May or whatever asked, to explain to the kids when they asked Mommy and Daddy Gun-nut Rightwingers,-"Momma, dadda, wha.... Whats the man behind the lady, the lady you said lost it for McCain... doin , doin to that bird? ...It looks like hes licking its ass.". "Killing? Why? Does it hurt?". "No?". "Yes?". "huh?". "what?"."How come?"."Why?" "Why?", "Why?", and "whies"....
Not to mention the group guilt trip seeing the slaughter of the birds reminds people of. Not so much, the "Ben Franklin mentioning the Bird as a possible national bird" thing, although thats a cute fact... but the origin of the birds celebration which was based in the systematic slaughter of the indigenous people of this land, who we force children to reinact in schools across this country, the mythological presystematic slaghter off, and alledged meal we had with and treaty we broke of together before we wiped out most all the Native Humans of this lands after they saved us from a dying an agonizing death at the hands of the harsh winter wilderness death we all try to convince ourselves didnt happen and was all just a huge mis-understanding about what we meant when we said it was a Christian thing annually....
But on top of that, the added, "My Pet Goat" moment, "Ah, Im a hunter too, but awww poor turkeys, factor. ... ...
How you had to explain to your kids, "No kids, they didnt feel it... well they felt it but, but they felt it different or, not as, I know they were squirming a whole lot for if the didnt feel it. But they have, peanut size brains, right like Bush, peanut size brain. Exactly, Terry Schiavo, Turkeys, that asshole in the White House. Peanut sized brains, peanut sized brains.... Maybe Bush has a slightly bigger brain like egg sized and thats why we only eat brids and handicap peoples brains during the Holidays... wait what, nevermind. Shut up and get me more eggnog... and go back to playing your "Tom Clancy Gears of War" whatever super-soldier for perpetual war society simulator X-Box game thats meant to strip you of your individuality and find false purpose in stupid fantasies while it turns you into a mindless short tempered adolesent killer and stop worrying about the turkey that you eat anyway and say is delicious.", moment it'll give you, gave you the day you first saw it, and will then re-give the whole family when they re-broadcast it Thanksgiving Day 50 times... analyzing it on the news you watch in-between football games or whatever.
...Hell, the sports announcers will be chuckling it up during their commentary with a thousand "-"What was going through head John?"-"Nothing Bill. That'd be my guess. Just the whistling sound of an Alaskan breeze, if her ears are uncovered, interception by McGraw!!! Yeah you seen those Virizon or Alltel, Alcell or whatever companies calls...BAM! oooo bad hit on Pacman...; , but commercials about "The Dead Zone", where they warn about you cant get any reception right? So the hotel room or house at the end of a street is a Dead Zone... What do you think Bradshaw. -"There you go. Her head is a dead zone" comments all afternoon.
Compounded on that, with having to repeat fifty times during the festivities over and over during the Day of the Holiday. People will be so Happy Sara Palin did this to them and brought all this activity into their homes this holiday dont you think? ...Going over the story, over and over, to your aunts and uncles, who cant hear so theres 10 times of telling the story right there. The siblings who show up late, or get way to hammered so they arent listening anyway cause their jobs suck and theyre bumbed or whatever and just want to watch the game or whatever anyway. People just showing up late, cousins coming in, maybe didnt think they were going to make it, now they show up or whaever, maybe they brought a lot of people you dont know and, they dont have kids or do but, they didn't see it or have to answer to their kids about it yet, so you got to talk to them about it 20 30 more times while the booze gets knocked back. But people are talking about it and its on the TV and the sports announcers. And you want to tell them to fuck off, and go check gramma whos been in the bathroom to make sure she didnt drown in the toilet or may have forgotten who she is and that shes not in a hotel back in the roaring 60s during a drug raid to go check on her to too make sure shes not trying to steal you stuff or snort bay powder. Or if dinners at "Nanna's" house or whatever make sure she isnt trying to steal her own her stuff. I dont know know where you eat, but thats not the point. Grams grams old and needs a GPS implanted next to that pace maker.... but....
The point is, is youd tell them to fuck off and check granny, and ask Uncle Lenny, or Charles, that asshole whos married to youre sister, who you like as a person, but he beats your sister in drunken rages, and since when he asked you fifty times to repeat the story while he was doing Yeager bombs in eggnog earlier, youre pretty sure he could tell them the story of the retard Governor....but you're pretty sure youre feeling one of his and your sisters tough love moments coming on.... but the people who showed up late, your cousins, you never see them, maybe you, even though you want to tell them to stuff it in their own ass, they. ... ... They brought stuffing and crannberries and those rolls everyone loves.
So now since everyones mentioned the Sara Turkey Slaughter Shenanegans, now you have to fill them in, but its dinner time or whatever. You tell them you'll tell them after dinner or something, during part of the evening which you know will be after that turkey-itice trictopan whatever kicks in when youre, youre going to be just....going to be SO thrilled to get into it for the thousandth time that day. After dishes are done, kids are screaming, running around cause turkey doesnt make them sleepy, and they didnt want to eat much of it that much anyway this year after seeing the story and becoming little liberal vegan freedom fighters Right Wing mommy and Daddy have to deprogram now... by that time in the night, when all youre gonna want to do is watch the damn game too, so you know that'll give you a shot of getting out of telling the story the thousandth million time.
That'll sure spruce up any drunken afternoon of quarrelling with inlaws we hate or dont want to see, "And so when the interview came on the kids started screaming and asking why does God hate Turkeys... Yes Agnus, Williard, Uncle Ted... it went on till bedtime that night. It was horrible. Didnt I have a piece of leftover... pie sitting right, here... Wait, whos Uncle Ted?! Whered he go anyway? and wheres my wallet? Where are the kids?!...oh shit,", as thousands of household across the country hear tires peeling out of their driveways everywhere.
Amber alerts break out nationwide, theirs mass hysteria panic, billions of innocent victems are found thrown in rivers the next day all across the country.... civil war breaks down as everyone starts asking who brought Uncle Ted, the country burns to the ground. And the only one left tp survive it are the Turkeys all these Governors pardons the day before...all cause of the distraction of the Sara Turkey Slaughter Insensitivity Scandal. The pardoned Turkeys happy to be blessed with freedom decide to check out whats on TV to see what kind of life awaits them. They see the carnage unfold on mass media, and all die of shock wearing that expression you get if you ever watch that video from the movie "The Ring". Just that contorted "GYAAAAAARG!!!!" expression...
And I can only imagine the right winger who cant appriciate Sara Palin for doing that to them this season.

By f u bush2November 22, 2008 - 8:02pmHi Again, Dummy!
You're the dummy, that's who! :~)
I knew you couldn't prove it. You asserted that it was "in the congressional record", but you can't back it up with facts. If it's "easily verified", you would have done so already, but you can't, because you're lying!
You stupid motherfucker, you couldn't prove the sun was shining in death valley if you were dying from a heat stroke.
Put up or shut up. Stop getting others to do you work for you, you shifty bastard. Post your proof that is in the congressional record. I'm getting ready to go to a movie, but I'll wait a few minutes.
You've been caught in your own "trick bag" shit head.
Bye, Dummy!

So, what you are saying is that you are to ignorant to google congressional record, is that it? Or are you saying that you are to ignorant to read the congressional record? I think what you really are saying is that if you don't have someone telling you what it says, you won't understand it.

By momofukuNovember 22, 2008 - 10:27pmHi Again, Dummy!
Apparently, it's not even up to you to educate yourself!
YOU said your proof was in the 'congressional record', but you refuse to produce said 'congressional record' which makes you a liar... and extremely stupid. Don't blame me because you squandered that free public education you were offered.
Bye, Dummy!

By othelloNovember 23, 2008 - 12:41amI never said proof
I said the reason we invaded Iraq etc is contained in the congressional record, which it is. Again, you have you facts wrong. I don't have to prove to you what was authorized or why congress authorized it. It is part of the public record. If you don't believe me, than go to the record and prove me wrong.

By Viv RichardsNovember 22, 2008 - 10:06pmNope, I have come to my conclusions honestly.
I have told that I have listened to our leaders speak, read the reports, and made up my mind. I do not let anyone do my thinking for me. From what I can see, you have not done your own research, thus leaving you with only one alternative: attack the messenger, because you can't refute the message.

By momofukuNovember 22, 2008 - 10:30pmRefute the message??
If the right wing echo machine crapola you are regurgitating helps you to make it through the night, have at it!! What ever!! ! You simply don't have the stomach for reality!!! You are a sheeple! That's okay. We need a few of you knuckleheads around to remind us of the pathetic alternative. I say "there but for the grace of God go I". If that sounds arrogant, so be it! Your the one that chooses to wallow in your sheepleshit!

By Viv RichardsNovember 23, 2008 - 1:23amWell, lets see now, if the leaders of our country give reason
for their actions, and I just state that this is what they said, then I am just regurgitating what they said. Well, yeah, I guess your right on that point. But, where you seem to have a problem with is me not accepting what they say, like you do. I pass no judgment on their statements, like you do. But all you do is regurgitate something you heard, about what they said, which you can't factually show to have been said;.In other words, you are believing liars who tell you lies about what someone else has said. Like I keep saying to you, go to the congressional records, regarding the Iraqi battle. Those are the facts, not the bs you keep bringing up.

By momofukuNovember 23, 2008 - 2:27amSilly Mo
Mo,
it would seem you have a fragile
ability to accept adult realities.
Could it be you have never gotten over how
the quarters and dimes really got under your pillow
after you lost your baby teeth?
Are you still sticking up for the "tooth fairy" version
of who took your little toosie's
and the "tooth fairy" version
on how
the change actually
got under your pillow?
In your version of reality
do those gifts under the tree on Christmas Day
arrive there by a chubby jolly man in a red suit
who flies around via sled
pulled by 8 reindeer
that are somehow unhindered by
the typical challenges of gravity??
I am just curious Mo
because you are clinging
to fairy tales
about
Bush and company
rather than facing
real life fact based reality.
Seriously Mo,
until you are ready to face facts
and are prepared
to accept
that you have been mislead,
there is nothing,
absolutely nothing we can do
or say
to help you to grasp
our JUSTIFIABLE
OUTRAGE
and OPPOSITION
to the
CRIMES
of the Bush administration
as well as
the GOP's complicity!

An authorized war of aggression. Imagine that. Still no evidence Iraq had anything to do with 9/11 or that invading Iraq was justified.
Mo, you are one big dummy.

By f u bush2November 23, 2008 - 2:39pmWhere do you get that argument from, fu obama?
You're twisting things again. By being classified as state sponsor of terrorist, they became allies of al quida. Just like germany and japan. And again, opening up a battlefront of our choosing is justification enough. It prevented us from fighting the enemy on their terms, thus saving American lives. You don't have to agree, but, hey, you suffer from BDS, so It don't it really matter if you agree or disagree. And just so you know, it wasn't up to you, now was it?

Oh intentionally obtuse one...
"And again, opening up a battlefront of our choosing is justification enough..."
Justification enough? Try illegal! According to the U.N. Charter, of which we are signatory.
THAT WAS NOT the "reason" that we invaded the soverign nation of Iraq. Remember? Mushroom clouds ring any bells? WMD's mean anything to you?
We've had this discussion before, you'd been shown multitudes of links to the U.N. site with references as to the restrictions regarding invasion of a soveriegn country. You've been proved WRONG time and time again...but you're a serial arguer, and you keep on going around in circles because of it.

By roadgoddessNovember 23, 2008 - 9:32pmThe REAL reasons we invaded Iraq:
(from a piece of paper from George Bush's work desk)
1. Make me a War President in time for 2004 (not like mah Daddy who was a War President in time for the beginning of the recession)
2. The oil--remove it from nationalization and put it back in private hands (you know, Exxon, Shell, BP, and Conoco)
3. Git thet varmint Saddam--he tried to whack mah Daddy!
4. Give lots of money to the Military Industrial Complex
5. Test new weapons in combat
6. No-Bid contracts for Halliburton and Dick Cheney's retirement package (while Halliburton moves offshore to avoid paying taxes and criminal liability for things done in Iraq
7. Weapons of Mass Distraction--keep Americans from seein' mah hands move as Ah steal from 'em and take away their civil rights!
8. Revenge for 9/11 on some hard targets instead of goats and sheep like in Afghanistan
9. Keeping all them NASCAR lovin' boobs from seein' anythin' other than ME wrapped up in a flag while wearin' a flight suit
10. Donnie and Fredo said so.
11. Dick said Ah'd be vindicated when they find the WMDs! They misunderestimated me again!

By blogbobNovember 23, 2008 - 7:04pmI know momo,
Now here is a question for you. How long would you last back in my uncle`s kill floor at his butchering plant? I am guessing less then three hours, and complaining about all the blood and gore that you would be in. Now before you ask. I did it along time ago when my grandpa needed help, and he it. It was 12 hour days on weekends, and this time of year it would go up to 16 hours per day for deer season.
