End of Laissez-Faire Capitalism?

By Thom Hartmann

Will the nationalization of our banking system signal that “laissez-faire” capitalism doesn’t work and never has? This hands off brand capitalism has now brought us the easy credit that exploded the housing market, that lead to Wall Street creating a flood of damaged investments and an economy in a recession with a hint of the next Republican Depression on the horizon.

Here are a couple of headlines for those who haven't had the time to study both economics and history:

1. There is no such thing as a "free market."

2. The "middle class" is the creation of government intervention in the marketplace, and won't exist without it (as millions of Americans and Europeans are discovering).

The conservative belief in "free markets" is a bit like the Catholic Church's insistence that the Earth was at the center of the Solar System in the Twelfth Century. It's widely believed by those in power, those who challenge it are branded heretics and ridiculed, and it is wrong.

In actual fact, there is no such thing as a "free market." Markets are the creation of government.

Governments provide a stable currency to make markets possible. They provide a legal infrastructure and court systems to enforce the contracts that make markets possible. They provide educated workforces through public education, and those workers show up at their places of business after traveling on public roads, rails, or airways provided by government. Businesses that use the "free market" are protected by police and fire departments provided by government, and send their communications - from phone to fax to internet - over lines that follow public rights-of-way maintained and protected by government.

And, most important, the rules of the game of business are defined by government. Any sports fan can tell you that football, baseball, or hockey without rules and referees would be a mess. Similarly, business without rules won't work.

Which explains why conservative economics wiped out the middle class during the period from 1880 to 1932, and why, when Reagan again began applying conservative economics, the middle class again began to vanish in America in the 1980s - a process that has dramatically picked up steam under George W. Bush.

The conservative mantra is "let the market decide." But there is no market independent of government, so what they're really saying is, "Stop corporations from defending workers and building a middle class, and let the corporations decide how much to pay for labor and how to trade." This is, at best, destructive to national and international economies, and, at worst, destructive to democracy itself.

Markets are a creation of government, just as corporations exist only by authorization of government. Governments set the rules of the market. And, since our government is of, by, and for We The People, those rules have historically been set to first maximize the public good resulting from people doing business.

The middle class is a new invention of liberal democracies, the direct result of governments defining the rules of the game of business. It is, quite simply, an artifact of government regulation of markets and tax laws.

But now the conservatives are back in the driver's seat, and heading us back toward the possibilitly of another Repulican Great Depression.

Only a return to liberal economic policies - a return to We The People again setting and enforcing the rules of the game of business - will reverse this dangerous trend. We've done it before, with tariffs, anti-trust legislation, and worker protections ranging from enforcing the rights of organized labor to restricting American companies' access to cheap foreign labor through visas and tariffs. The result was the production of something never before seen in history: a strong and vibrant middle class.

If the remnants of that modern middle class are to survive - and grow - we must learn the lessons of the past and return to the policies that in the 1780s and the late 1930s brought this nation back from the brink of economic disaster.

Nationalize the Banks!

Oh bebe, you poor, pathetic little cracker. I can't believe that you were trying to register as a voter in Louisiana as well as Georgia. You know that's illegal, right?

Keep the Nigger Out of Office

Support the Troops.
End the Occupation.

YAWN....

Since you seem to find a lot of links, you wouldn't happen to have one with Sarah Palin's husband and the both of them meeting with the Alaska seperatist movement. You know, the one that prays for the destruction of America and wants to "rip" the Alaska star off of the US flag?

I've heard there is a video of Sarah Palin's witch doctor "minister" ministering to her? Is that true?

Oh wait, do you know where the video is of John McCain getting angry at a veteran for questioning McCain's voting record against veterans? The Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan gave 150 members of congress an A. Obama and Biden both recieved a B. McCain a D.

Is inciting crowds to shout "kill him" and "traitor" a form of "domestic terrorism"?

I was wondering if you have a link to that video of a woman crying because John McCain was blocking info to help her find out what happened to her brother, also a POW because John McCain doesn't want his records reviewed. He was verbally mistreating her so bad in the senate, she wept. She just wanted to find out about her brother.

Since you are so good at finding videos, perhaps you could find these, if you wouldn't mind. I've heard they are all on Youtube.

Oh, my - you might just give Cracker a stroke!

Can I help?

Investigation ties Palin to 'extreme right-wing fringe'David Edwards and Muriel Kane
The McCain campaign has attempted to make an issue out of Barack Obama's limited connections with former Weather Underground member William Ayers. However, according to a new investigative report, vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin herself has had a far close and more extensive association with Alaska's own political extremists than she has ever acknowledged.

The story at Salon.com by Max Blumenthal and David Neiwart offers an in-depth examination of the crucial role played in Palin's political career by two members of the secessionist Alaska Independence Party (AIP).

When Blumenthal appeared on Thursday's Rachel Maddow Show, he began by explaining that AIP -- which has links to both neo-Confederate parties in the South and the theocratic Constitutional Party -- serves as "a haven for anti-government extremists, anti-government militia members, and conspiratorial figures who believe that the United States government plans to implement a New World Order."

The Nationalization of Our Economy

Being from the Midwest (Motor City)...I still find it amazing that many of my fellow Michiganders, who have seen the corrupt and failed policies of the Far Right, Reagun, facist policies. Are still backing McCain/Palin. I think many of my fellow citizens are just uneducated & unaware of the facts. Bush's policy of throwing money at our financial system to the point where it may become nationalized like the banking systems in Europe. Seems to be a last ditch effort in trying to save our ever so sliding economy. It seems to be that the Reagun style "supply side" economic policies of the last 26 years have totally failed us here in the United States and around the entire globe.

Saddam Hussein still has supporters?

Amazing! He can even grab 'em from the grave!!

Sniff, sniff ... wow, the desperation emanating from Pappy Cracker's post is STANKY!! P U, white trash!!

"She's Cheney in drag." Me

That the "middle class" is a creation of government intervention

... certainly explains why McCain is allergic to saying it.

Hope Robespierre lets me help with his "machines."

Bushie!  Doin' a helluva job!
G0P Trinity:  Failure, Fraud, Deceit.

Thom Hartmann is spot on

I like the way you frame the situation, Thom. We know what has happened to the middle class since Reagan let the" free market" run rampant. The "free market" is code for "destroy the unions". As for the banks, we now see what becomes of them when they are de-regulated. They run wild with "free" money -- ours!! The repubs were clever enough to wait until the generation that lived through the great depression had passed on to revive the same destructive laissez-faire ideology with regards to finance. And now we face an even bigger "great depression". I sure hope President Obama will rise to the level of reformer that FDR was called to be. We need more than change, we need a NEW New Deal.

Bush's economy will bring the market down

to pre-Clinton levels.

There is a reverse Bradley effect going on. Crackers who will vote for Obama to save their retirement say they will vote for McCain because they do not want to admit voting for Obama. They've seen what the republicans have done.

Look at the states now in play for Obama that weren't. Look at the states that were on the fence and now solidly Obama. Look also at the congressional races that had large leads for republicans and now are in play.

McCain said the fundamentals are strong

You can bank on it.

LOL

Economic Progressivism

What republican economic policy ignores is that there can be no real prosperity without a thriving middle class. For example, the only reason China can grow economically is by selling its products and manufacturing for export to countries like the U.S. with large middle class populations that have money to buy products. I think that what we have seen is government policies that have been so abusive to the middle class that they have killed the goose that laid the golden egg.

This subprime crisis for example: loan practices (home and credit card) have become so abusive that people just threw up their hands and said, forget it, just let the house go, these loan terms are unfair. From my experience, people generally don't want to lose their homes and do not buy homes they cannot afford, what happens is that banks screw them by using the tyranny of unfair loan practices. The problem is not loaning to poor minorities, the problem is abusive loan terms that were designed to abuse these people and setting them up for failure: onerous fees, excessive interest rates, rate re-set terms.

I also think that the use of credit reports is getting wildly out of hand and it is being used to perpetrate economic crimes.

Also, credit card practices are so abusive and are stacked against the middle class. If you read Obama's economic plan he mentions some great ideas to address credit card abuse, i.e.:
no retroactive loan term modifications, interest rate increases can only apply for future credit.

ACORN VOTER FRAUD

John McCain won the debate last night and if any of you are really a nonpartisan you could see this.

We have a Republic with democratic principals; democracies have elected Adolf Hitler, Hugo Chavez, Saddam Hussein and Hamas. The Electoral College system we have to elect our President could in theory throw out the popular vote because voter/election fraud or any other serious problem and elect our next President. This may be a historic election that the Electoral College sees the nation wide voter fraud caused by ACORN and States not validating US citizenship when people register to vote and decide to elect the next President themselves.

I got my Senate voting data at SenateReports.com you can too!

By dugfmjamulOctober 16, 2008 - 8:25pm

LMAO!

Sure. Whatever. Can you feel the change coming? It's the end of the republicans trashing our country.

ACORN VOTER FRAUD

Voter integrity must be enforce and this nonsense of not validating US Citizenship “Because it is too hard to validate US citizenship” when people register to vote has got to stop , ask yourselves why can poor Republicans find the correct documents to register to vote but poor Democrats can’t?

Please do not throw back with past or present Republican voter suppression techniques; two wrongs do not make a right!

By dugfmjamulOctober 16, 2008 - 8:45pm

ACORN is a dead issue. It has no legs. It's all bullshit. And McCain has spoken at ACORN events himself. Nice try but it isn't working.

Better luck next election.

Have fun with this:
wtf?

John McCain is getting ill

John McCain is getting ill with the thought of the SOCIALIST Barrack Obama becoming President of the United States of America and I'm getting ill TOO!

By dugfmjamulOctober 16, 2008 - 9:15pm

Support the Troops.
End the Occupation.

By dugfmjamulOctober 16, 2008 - 9:15pm
