Palin, Failin', McCain Ain't Sailin'

By Beau Friedlander

There is good news everywhere (other than on the Street). Let me rephrase that: There is good news anent the 2008 presidential election if you would like to see Barack Obama win. Let me rephrase that again: Hurray!!! Folks we're looking at an embarassment of riches as we trundle inexorably to election day.

Yesterday, John McCain helped himself and the nation, though not his campaign and today Obama thanked him. Responding to a man at a Minnesota rally who expressed fear of an Obama presidency, McCain pointed out that there was nothing morally wrong with Obama--he is "a decent man" and a "family man" and would be an okay president. McCain said essentially that he would prefer to see himself get elected president over Obama. Nice. (Sorta.)

In other news, Alaska state lawmakers released a much-anticipated report on Palin's role in the 2007 dismissal of the state public safety commissioner Walter Monegan because he refused to fire a state trooper who was entangled in a nasty divorce with the governor's sister. The report said that Governor Palin had abused her powers, but that no legal action would be taken.

Frankly this is a bit of a non-story. Air America already covered (fifth item) the New York Times report Friday morning that proved Palin had made several phone calls that she later lied about regarding the dismissal of Trooper Wooten. The story hitting on the Friday evening of a long weekend is a shame, because fewer people will know about it (I was already asleep!). But news will trickle out. It effects undecided voters for the most part, and we'll just have to hope folks on the fence are paying attention.

The net result of the Palin report? Yet another reason in the skein of reasons that a person of such low caliber as Sarah Palin should be the very reason that McCain loses. He chose her, it's his problem. Live by the vpilf, die by the vpilf. She should not be allowed to be vice president of the United States under any circumstances, much less serving under a (war hero) cancer-survivor who is in his seventies. It's just common sense.

The jig is indeed up for the McCain campaign. Kudos to the senator from Arizona for kinda-sorta quashing the Muslin/Terrorist meme (he went on to talk about Bill Ayers at the same event). Kudos to the Alaska state lawmakers who told the truth, even if they did so when no one was listening.

We have not won yet, but it's beginning to seem a lot like Christmas--and all I want this year is change.

Obama the Muslim

It's ashame that the liberal media is in such a frenzy over the Nigger and his brief lead in the polls. McCain is our future President, and he will send the Nigger back to Africa where he and all Niggers belong. Obama is not a Christian, he is Muslim. There is a huge difference. Alla, Muhammed, or whatever dead god they follow, the Muslims are a religion of terror and violence, and you Nigger lovers want that as your President!! What a shame. If you want a spear-chucking, yard-ape, porch-monkey, silver-back, Nigger as President then move to Africa. It's the White House.

momofuku, you're such a hypocrite.

And the Christian religion

Never has used terror as a tatic. You know with the witch hunts, and taking young native kids and beating them for speaking thier own language. How about the U.S.A. They never used terror in your mind either, ask the natives if they didn`t and it is still happening today.

Now if knew anything the you would know that muslims, christians and jews all follow the same god. Wich is the god of Aberham, but I would bet that you don`t even know that.

Never has used terror as a tatic

Have you ever heard of "the Spanish Inquisition"? Or the "Thirty Years' War"? Try googling one of those and see how Christianity has used terror to its advantage through the ages.

SORRY,

But that what I should have said here are the examples of the use of terror. But yes I know that, and no I did not go to any of those schools. Infact if I had the money I would have went to Oklahoma State for Vet med.

You also have to look at not only what the church when it used terror, but our own goverment against the native americans. Every tribe has a Trail of Tears that they had to go thew, and this includes the ones that stayed in thier homelands. I know because I am Pawnee, and my tribe comes from Neberaska near Grand Island.

My apologies. After my first post I re-read your post and saw exactly what you were saying. I edited my post accordingly. I will try in the future to read more thoroughly before posting responses. My bad, I'm sorry.

You must have missed the sarcasm...

...if you accept rlm_dcb's comment at face value. Liberty U? Look at the links he/she posted; not exactly what one would expect from a Palin clone...

Now why would I want to go there,

When Oral Roberts U is just right down the road. LOL. I know that I would never be accepted there because I am slightly overweight, and too much B.S. that goes on in those colleges, and I am too much of a free thinker for them.

Good one...

Dad???????????? Liberal Holocaust

Dad is that you?? You sound just like my dad. Dad Please get some help for your hatred!! I know you were severely abused as a child. I know you have had a hard life!! But your pain and anger is misdirected and you can heal. You can heal if only you would chose to. Please chose to.....please!!!! Please do not pass on your pain & mis-directed feelings of anger (hate) to another generation.

"Liberal Holocaust" must really hate America...

...because his limited intelligence makes him espouse ideas that demean and weaken us all, regardless of race or creed. He probably thinks of himself as a patriotic American, but is too stupid to see how badly his vile attitude hurts his own country. He is what's wrong with America, an anachronism (look it up, asshole) that should have long ago been banished from our land.

This "Obama is a muslim" crap is commonly spewed by the same people who rail about Reverend Wright (a Baptist minister), whose church Barack attended for 20 years. The irony of this is lost on them because of their minimal intelligence.

"liberal Holocaust" probably also considers himself a Christian, but doesn't comprehend how he insults his own god by calling him (Jehovah / Jaweh / Allah / Jah) a "dead god", the same way he doesn't understand that he insults America every time he opens his mouth to puke out his hatred.

Further, I am going to assume that Liberal Holocaust is Caucasian. The race gets it's name from the Caucasus mountains in what is now southern Russia, where fair-skinned "white" people first appeared. Do you suppose he thinks HE belongs in Russia?

These guys are just too stupid to ever "get it". Sadly, thinking people are forced to spend time combating their negativity (case in point here), time which could be spent framing positive solutions for the future. I really wish fools like LH would either grow a brain or STFU...

Simbo I understand

Simbo I understand where you are coming from and I agree with much of what you said. Liberal Holocaust expresses himself exactly the way my dad does. My dad is an extreme bigot. It is interesting because unlike the stereotypical bigot, my dad is a highly intelligent man. He is a high I.Q. guy who festers from pain and ignorance. My dads I.Q. is off the board high and he has lived a productive life in spite of his sickness. He considers himself a good Christian. He even tried to enroll himself in a school to become a preacher. They didn't accept him. He is a suffering man. Hatred is a terrible illness. I think some people are trapped in a hatred addiction. I appears to me that hatred addiction has the same pathology of most other addictions. It creates a sinister cycle.

Thank you, Nobush

Perhaps you might guide your dad to this blog, and appeal to his reason. Racism is counterproductive in every way (economically, socially, politically, spiritually, etc.), and nothing would please me more than the idea that the healing process began here.

It is gratifying beyond words to see that you have broken the cycle...

Peace!

Smibo

I appreciate your kindness. Sincerely!
I am fortunate that even though my dad is a bigot my Mom is not. I was raised by an extraordinary woman. My grandmother was a wonderful woman that had a tremendous influence on me. So fortunately I had wonderful influences that I was able to contrast with my dads negative example. It was always clear to me that my father's racism was wrong. Throughout my life I have given lots of thought to "how & why" my dads racism is wrong and unhealthy and what is the cure/s. I think of racism as an illness. Racism is curable for the willing. I urge racists to seek help.

My guess

is that LH (I just call him LunkHead) is an aversive racist who is trying to get everyone on this blog to talk about HIM rather than John McCain's exceptional night last night, when he had to scold two of his white trash rally attendees for their personal animosity toward Obama. The trash talk got even too harsh for Maverick, but he cannot stuff that genie back in the bottle. He got booed at his own rally.

I am reminded by last night's performance of the movie "Network." Kooky newsanchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch) develops a very popular following that brings the 4th place (out of 4) network a lot of cash. But then Beale starts to turn his rhetoric on the corporations who sponsor his telecast. The chairman of the network (Ned Beatty) calls Beale into the boardroom and delivers a passionate rebuke ("You have meddled with the primal forces of nature!!! and for THAT, you will atone!!!"). So beginning the next night Beale begins to deliver low-emotion messages about the inevitability of the move to corporatism in our society. The network's rating start to plummet, but the chairman will do nothing to remove Beale since he is delivering the exact corporatist facist message the CEOs want. The show's producers and the entertainment director (Faye Dunaway) then conspire to assassinate Beale live on the show to salvage their own jobs, and hopefully to reinstate the 4th place network as a winner due to sympathy.

I hope that the McCain plot does not follow the Network plot. I do not want to see anything happen to either presidential candidate; I certainly do not want to see Sarah Palin get sympathy votes and become our president.

Very little difference

The reality is that extreme haters like Liberal Holocaust are IDENTICAL to the Muslim extremists/terrorists, the Nazi extremists/terrorists and all other irrational people that chose to be haters....people defined by hatred and sick acts. I wonder if Liberal Holocaust even see's the irony that?

Irony, like nuance, is largely lost on them...

because that whole mindset (regardless of ideology) appeals to the emotions of non-thinkers, and encourages a certain laziness of thought. To most of them, thinking is too much like work. The few thinkers among them are either misguided (I'm being charitable here), or else just plain evil.

if i could press the button

just one time and make someone disappear without reprisal... it would be you. it really would, LH.

the white house was built by black people. remember that.

Yawn. You're a bore.

"She's Cheney in drag." Me

hope nobody sees me

I just had to ask myself, was Palin trying to hide her face with her papers , when she walked out of the courtroom, I have seen criminals do that.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/11/palin-comments-troopergate/

Duh!

As an American and a Veteran, I can assure you that I didn't enter the military to protect racists. I entered the military because of the continuing and decent fight against racists such as LiberalHolocaust. These are not representatives of America. America is here to save the world from these evil people that are obviously the spawn of Satan.

Watching Sarah Palin this morning give a speech was painful. Not just because of her lack of grammar or her obvious lack of any formal education. It was painful because she rallies the pitchfork crowd. Hearing her talk about developing "clean coal technology" and "nuclear power plants" when when can't correctly pronounce the words was on one level humorous, but on another level, tragic.

I suspect if you asked Sarah Palin where the Physicists and scientists and engineers to build nuclear power plants came from, she would say, "From the nuclear power plant people, of course". If you asked her who would regulate and inspect these plants, she would say, "From the inspector people".

The people at her "pitchfork" rallies will never ask these questions. Why? Because they also believe nuclear power plants come from the "nuclear power plant people".

If her people read what I just wrote, they wouldn't understand the issue. They would ask with snarky derision, "Where else would nuclear power plants come from than from the nuclear power plant people? Duh!"

Dean

You're right on the money, so to speak, again. It is clear that the "ideal candidate" from the Republican perspective is the loafer near the bottom of his/her class, who has no real intellectual curiosity, but a great amount of desire to be in charge. These people have the ability to whip crowds into a frenzy and to play the "National Security" card and the "No Gay Marriage" card and the "Flag Burning Amendment" card to full advantage. Unfortunately for those who want intellectual midgets in both the presidency and the vice presidency this time, the ECONOMY (stupid) is drowning out everything else, and for once, the wedge issue cards have little current value--just like nearly everybody's 401Ks and IRAs (although Palin tried mightily today to play a few wedge cards in Pennsylvania).

In other news, kudos to John McCain for verbally smacking down the white trash grandma who claimed that Obama was "a arab." I believe the word she really wanted to say was "MOOslim," but she realized that there was a TV camera poking in her face, so she moderated a bit. McCain got BOOED at his own rally for finally saying "enough" to the Reich Wingnuts who have been showing up at his rallies recently. As ye sow, so shall ye reap. Seriously, John, if you're reading this blog, well done. It's about friggin time you told people that this is politics, it's not personal.

I don't burn flags either

but I will defend anyone's right to do it if they so choose.

There was recently a photo of Palin wrapped in a US flag circulating on the net. Guess Sarah was never in the Girl Scouts, where they would have taught her that wearing the flag is desecration, the same as burning it.

As far as flags upside down, I agree, it's time for that distress signal to be hoisted over this nation. Our democracy is going down, courtesy Reagan, Bush the First, Clinton's internationalism, and Chimpy Bush's war on the Middle Class and civil rights. I just hope that President Obama will have the fortitude and the congressional support to take us back up the road and away from the Corporate Facism to which we are currently headed.

Keep the faith, Blogbob...

Change is just over the horizon, and will be here soon...

By rlm_dcbOctober 11, 2008 - 1:59pm

I've never burned the flag. But I don't care about symbols. Seeing one burn does not stir me emotionally. I see the overall symbolism of the event. I can simultaneously see the flag can be a symbol of hope and at other times a symbol of what's wrong in the world. How the flag is treated at a given moment is just representative of the issues of the time. People that define the flag in one manner and only see the burning as a burning and nothing more, are usually part of the problem.

I think the reason I never have burned a flag is that it has no emotional meaning in my mind one way or another so if I'm angry at the moment with the US, the flag does not come to my mind as something to take my anger out on.

I'll tell you this though. If the government tells me that it is illegal to burn the flag then I will burn the flag on a regular basis. Simply because it would be wrong to tell me not to and I enjoy civil disobedience.

It should never be within the government's pervue

to tell us how we may express our protest, as long as we do not physically hurt others or wreck their property. Ayres was wrong to set bombs. Someone could easily have been hurt or killed, and you know it would have been some poor Schmoe minding his own business who would have gotten it. Two wrongs never make a right.

the alaskan commission says palin broke the law by pressuring the commissioner but it was legal for her to fire him. and she abused power. i guess one can abuse power without breaking the law.

None at all

They were making a distinction between "breaking the law" and an "ethics violation".

Law schools have been struggling with "teaching" ethics for years now. Some feel that the law should be taught "pure" and others feel the teaching should be tempered with the teaching of "ethics" as part of the curriculum.

People like McCain, with his many senate scandals, Palin, with her current scandal, and Bush with his many, many business and political scandals will say, "I was exonerated" and found "completely innocent". They always ignore the ethics rebuke because they have no ethics.

The trooper's fate aside

A matter of Palin's character and judgment

.And the unwarranted career destruction of the public safety commissioner.

a reporter asked palin:

"did you abuse power?"

palin: "sir, no, the report says it was legal for me to fire the commissioner. read the report, sir."

the report also says she abused power.

mccain wants to tax

employer-provided health care. i don't know if the employer will pay the tax or the employees. i guess both when employers cut people off of their health care plans.

Tax Policy in America

has always been used to motivate people and corporations to do the government's bidding.

Energy tax credits in the 1970s allowed people to take a tax break for adding insulation to their old homes. This lessened the pressure on the energy supply and on the politicians running the show.

Now Gramps, who has never needed a health care plan in his life (what with the government benefits of his admiral father and his own military then Congressional benefits) wants to tax either the corporations or the citizens for their employer-provided health care plans. If the corporations get taxed, they will drop employee health benefits hike a hot rock. If individuals get taxed, they will be motivated to want to buy their own personal health care insurance without having to be taxed on the premiums.

Either way, McSame's benefactors, the CEOs and corporatists, win. Corporations will spend less on benefits and more bottom line can go to CEO compensation. And if individuals pay for their own health care, the insurance insustry will hit a windfall that will pad the compensation packages of their CEOs for yerars to come.

What everyone seems to be forgetting is the cost of individual insurance. At $6-7k a year for a healthy indivdual, the $2,500 tax credit proposed by McSame will leave many in need of several thousand dollars to cover their health benefit costs. Not to mention those of us with chronic conditions that make us bad insurance risks. Wouldn't that be an irony--McCain's health care solution makes the problem worse by throwing essentially everyone into the pool of the uninsured, and haivng insurers selectively pick only those who will never use their benefits as worthy of insurance, and fuck everyone else.

We have over 40 million uninsured in the US today. If you think that the line at the ER is bad now when you walk in with a fracture, just wait until 60 or so million more lower income Americans with no health coverage start using the ER as their primary medical care, which is what will happen if Johnny McSame gets his way.

but the important thing, in my opinion,

is that mccain wants to move people off of employer-provided health care and onto these health care savings accounts with very high deductables. i don't know about these savings accounts. i'm not sure how they work. the devil is in the details.

The USG

has broken nearly every treaty with Native Americans. What makes you think that the treaty to which you are referring would not also be broken?

"We're sorry, but due to President McCain's tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% of Americnas, there just isn't enough money to pay for the BIA clinics any longer...but here's an alternative plan. Just have the Tribe invest a few million in these special accounts..." Fast forward to the next recession, when the Wall Street managed funds go belly-up, and Native American nations all over this great land suddenly discover that they have no health care any more...

Sounds like the promises of Ford, GM, GE, and others to their employees of the 50s and 60s and 70s; "just pay into this pension fund and we'll take care of it for you...oops! Sorry! We have to pay our CEO 300 million to quit, so we're going to have to draw down on the pension fund to do it. Why don't you invest instead in this 401k, that is fully dependent on a bull stock market to add value?" Fast forward to 2008, and retirees everywhere wake up with no money on which to live any longer.

Thousands of Christians flee killings in Mosul
Posted on Saturday, October 11, 2008
By Leila Fadel | McClatchy Newspapers

BAGHDAD — Christians in Mosul are fleeing their homes after a spate of killings this week that left 12 Christians dead in one of the largest Christian communities in Iraq.

The killings follow large protests by the community last month against the passage of the provincial elections law. An article that would give representation to Christians and other minorities was removed from the law before its passage.

Now the last safe haven for Christians is gone, said Canon Andrew White the vicar of St. George's church in Baghdad.

After a spree of killings and forced evictions of Iraqi Christians in Baghdad last year, many fled to Mosul. But even there they could not escape the danger. In February of this year the Archbishop Paulos Faraj Raho of Mosul was kidnapped and killed.

"Christians are being killed in the only place they felt safe, in Ninevah," White said, referring to the province of which Mosul is the capital. "This is where they fled to and now there's no safe place for them."

Over a thousand Christian families have fled Mosul for outlying villages and villages in the Kurdistan region in search of safety, a spokesman for the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs said. Posters are being put up with guidelines on how to leave.

"The Christian families left in Mosul are very few indeed," said Mariwan Nakshabandee, spokesman for the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs, which oversees Christian communities in Mosul.

Iraqi Assyrian and Chaldean Catholics trace their roots to ancient Mesopotamia and Christian communities were prominent in many major Iraqi cities, including Mosul in the north and Basra in the south and Baghdad. The capital had enclaves in the central neighborhood of Karada, the eastern neighborhood of New Baghdad and nearby al-Ghadir as well as Dora in the capital's south.

Christians once were estimated to be about 3 percent of the Iraqi population or about 800,000 people.

But as Iraq grew bloody and violent the Christian community dwindled. Now some estimate that more than half of Iraq's Christians have fled. White believes that the Christian community is about a quarter of the estimated 800,000.

Afghan president offers Taliban a role in governing country

Afghan president offers Taliban a role in governing country
By Nick Meo in Kabul
Last Updated: 7:03PM BST 11 Oct 2008

President Hamid Karzai has offered Taliban leaders the possibility of positions in his government if they agree to a peace deal which could bring fighting to an end.

The offer was made through his brother Qayoun at a secret meeting in Saudi Arabia of which Britain was aware.
Britain has been encouraging the Kabul government to talk to its Taliban enemies for more than two years and the Americans are thought to be coming round to the idea of a deal which would end the costly war in Afghanistan.

But The Sunday Telegraph has learned that the allies would insist that the Taliban would have to split with al-Qaeda and provide information on international terrorists in Pakistan and Afghanistan as the price of a deal.
Under the Saudi Arabian initiative more than a dozen former senior Taliban figures travelled to the kingdom with the approval of President Hamid Karzai's government.

The British Government has said little about the initiative in public but British military commanders and diplomats are known to favour talking to the Taliban as a way of ending the war.

In the last year the insurgency has worsened considerably, with UN figures showing a 40 per cent rise in civilian casualties and a 40 per cent increase in insurgent attacks in the past 12 months.

US open to Taliban peace talks
By James Blitz in London
Published: October 10 2008 03:00 | Last updated: October 10 2008 03:00

Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, said last night that Washington could "ultimately" contemplate the idea of negotiating with the Taliban to secure a political settlement in Afghanistan, if the Afghan government were to pursue such talks.

In comments that add to the growing sense across Nato that the alliance will never achieve a comprehensive military victory in Afghanistan, Mr Gates said a political settlement with the Taliban was conceivable.

However, he insisted the US would never negotiate with al-Qaeda forces, who are also seeking to destabilise Hamid Karzai's Afghan government.

"There has to be ultimately, and I'll underscore ultimately, reconciliation as part of a political outcome to this," Mr Gates told reporters at a summit of Nato defence ministers in Budapest. "That's ultimately the exit strategy for all of us."

But when listing conditions for reconciliation, he said: "We have to be sure that we're not talking about any al-Qaeda."

Mr Gates's comments are the latest indication that western and Afghan leaders are increasingly concerned about the inability of Nato to achieve a decisive victory over the Taliban, warning that the 26 member alliance must also pursue political reconciliation with some of its enemies.

An indication of the new mood in Kabul recently became apparent when Mr Karzai said he had asked the Saudi government to consider brokering talks between his administration and the Taliban.

Palin Booed At Flyers' Game

E&P reports that Sarah Palin was greeted with a chorus of boos at the Philadelphia Flyers game where she dropped the puck at the Flyers' opener:

You never know where you are gonna find a political scoop, but Lynn Zinser at her NYT hockey "Slapshot" blog just posted that Sarah Palin, in her much-ballyhooed appearance dropping the puck at the Philly Flyers' opener, was greeted by "resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd."

The biggest problem: when Palin came out to onto the Wachovia Center ice Saturday night -- greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd -- the the two hockey players who had no choice but to appear with her in that photo op were turned into props in a political campaign.
