Republicans, Republicans

Ron Reagan:

Tonight on the show, on the heels of the Powell announcement, we discuss the appeal Obama has had for some on the Republican side of the aisle.

Joining us on the line from Philadelphia, Michael Smerconish, columnist (Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News), commentator and radio host.

Over the past 28 years, he has never voted for a Democrat for President. But in this past Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer he endorsed Senator Obama.

After the interview, we'll take your calls.

This Saturday on Black Politics . . . Courage my friends

A message from Chris Owens:

I'm taking apart this week’s big news: the bailout bill and the VP debate.

And, with little over 30 days to the election, tune in for our regular segment on protecting your vote. I’ll be speaking with Sheryll Cashin, a Harvard classmate of Barack Obama’s and now professor of law at Georgetown University. She’s an expert on civil rights, so we’ll be talking about voting and activism, as well as her incredible memoir, "THE AGITATOR’S DAUGHTER: Four Generations of One Extraordinary African-American Family," which reveals her own family's involvement with politics and activism.

She is also the author of "The Failures of Integration: How Race and Class are Undermining the American Dream" (PublicAffairs, 2004) which was an Editors’ Choice in the New York Times Book Review and a finalist for the 2005 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for non-fiction.

Morning Roundup: Around the Web Waiting for Other Shoes to Drop

Here's an interesting riddle. The big three had no plan for winning, which was why lawmakers sent them back to the drawing board before considering a financial bailout. Now according to the Washington Post, members of Congress have put the cart before the horse opining that the big three need to compete to create the car of the future, which of course is not yet profitable, which is why sooner than later we will be putting a horse in front of a cart.

MSNBC's Chris Matthew does a tale of the tape between George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

One of the fringe benefits of our crumbling global economy? You learn about companies and industries that 1.) you've never heard of and 2.) have the power to bring global markets to their knees. Today's industry? Mining. The players? Rio and BHP Billiton. The problem? Heh.... Anyway, it's a bad day for commodities.

This is Change? 20 Hawks, Clintonites and Neocons to Watch for in Obama's White House

U.S. policy is not about one individual, and no matter how much faith people place in President-elect Barack Obama, the policies he enacts will be fruit of a tree with many roots. Among them: his personal politics and views, the disastrous realities his administration will inherit, and, of course, unpredictable future crises. But the best immediate indicator of what an Obama administration might look like can be found in the people he surrounds himself with and who he appoints to his Cabinet.

Not So Fast, Folks

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade or be that proverbial object tossed into the collective punch bowl, but why is anyone surprised that Obama won? I mean, come on!

Bender: Crystal Ball

You've seen all the predictions about the electoral vote, the popular vote and the number of Democratic pick-ups in the Senate and House. That's already old prognostication. I mean, even Nostradamus supposedly called it for Obama more than 500 years ago.

Don't Vote [Ed. DO!]

Memo

To: A young adult
From: An elder
Re: Voting

Dear young adult,

I, your elder, am writing to let you know that you don’t need to vote.  My friends and I will vote for your interests. We've got things under control.

We've been voting for your interests for the past eight years.  You see how well my buddies and I have done.

We've come up with a new plan about wars. It's called the Bush Doctrine and it says we now can attack preemptively. It's way better than that "don't fight unless we're provoked" nonsense.

We've also decided that the presidency doesn't have enough power; we think it's a lot better if the president can jail you without charges.

In response to the terrorists' attacks on our freedoms, we've decided to spy on ourselves, to listen to our phone calls, and to suspend habeas corpus. You're welcome.

We've decided that because the world is such a scary place, the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to us and that torture is okay. Here's more good news:  Because we live in a democracy, when your government tortures people, it is doing so on your behalf.  So you own this policy even if you don't vote. Especially if you don't vote!

Eight years ago, we came up with a great plan for our economy.  If we give more to the wealthy, it will help our economy.  Eight years later, we feel that because our economy has tanked, we should give even more money to the wealthy. We’re not concerned that we turned Clinton’s record surpluses into record deficits and neither should you: You can do what our generation has done: charge it to your kids!  Don’t worry if this doesn’t make sense to you.  We, the voters, have it covered.
