Nancy Skinner in for Ron today: Wednesday, November 26th.

By Lauren Kirchner

Happy Thanksgiving, folks!  Ron's out today pardoning-slash-slaughtering turkeys, so we are delighted to have as our guest host Nancy Skinner, radio-host-turned-politician who ran against President-elect Barack Obama in the Illinois U.S. Senate Democratic primary in 2004.

She's been a radio host since 1997 when she got a show on on WLS in Chicago, and has appeared frequently on CNN, MSNBC and the Fox News Channel.  After her loss to Obama, Nancy returned to her home town of Royal Oak, Michigan and was the morning host on 1310 AM Detroit’s Progressive Talk for a year before challenging a 14-year incumbent, Republican Joe Knollenberg, for congress in 2006.  She surprised many with a near upset, losing only 48 to 52%.

We've got tons to talk about today, and we want to hear from you, too!  Leave a comment below or call in to 866-303-2270.

It's so great to hear Nancy back on the air!

Would love to hear more of her. She's so knowledgeable and has a great rapport with the listeners. Smart and funny!

The My Space Torment Murder

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 49-year-old Missouri woman who prosecutors say drove a lovestruck 13-year-old girl to suicide by tormenting her with a fake MySpace persona was acquitted on Wednesday of the most serious charges against her.

Lori Drew was found guilty of three misdemeanor counts in the high-profile case, which made worldwide headlines and prompted calls for social networking sites like MySpace to crack down on such activities.

She was cleared of three felonies by the six-woman, six-man jury, which deadlocked on a fourth count of conspiracy.

Drew will face a sentence ranging from probation to three years in prison for the misdemeanor convictions. She could have been sent to federal prison for up to 20 years if she had been convicted on the felony charges.

Fiscal Responsibility

As long as I have been alive, republicans have always referred to themselves as the guardians of the almighty dollar and to democrats as "tax and spenders".

I think republicans have been in denial for decades of the essential fact that government has necessarily become larger in the modern age with things like social security and medicare and education spending, necessary regulation, military budgets etc.

The problem with republicanism is that it does not offer a cogent strategy to deal with the expansion of government, but instead offers gimmicks such as trickle down economics which postulates that government can function at the modern level and we can also lower everybody's taxes. On a more cynical level, some argue that republicans want to destroy the modern state, i.e. the "wither on the vine" approach.

Get real guys, social security is not going anywhere, and neither is medicare. Modern government must play some safety net role, and in fact will likely get larger with some form of universal health care. We have a very rich society and we can afford a humane system that takes care of the weak and vulnerable among us, so long as we do not neglect and mismanage our system with irresponsible tax cuts and business deregulation, and an unsustainable tax policy.
