Doing Time! Palin Reads The New York Times

By Ron Kuby

Sarah Palin went from being unable to articulate a single source from which she receives her news, to quoting the New York Times, all in a single week. The article that allegedly drew Palin's attention was a lengthy piece in Saturday's Times which explored the connections (and lack thereof) to Barack Obama and Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers. It was on that basis that Palin claimed that Obama was "palling around with terrorists" (false), and that this issue has not been addressed before (also false).

Now I know Bill Ayers and his family, so maybe I should be recused from this blog. Oh, this is the new journalism--there are no recusals. Okay. I'll continue. While John McCain was killing Vietnamese in a country that did not attack us and posed no threat to us, Bill Ayers was engaged in the symbolic destruction of property in an effort to end the war. I know the Obama campaign won't say this--and cannot say this because America's warriors are sacrosanct, no matter how wrong the cause for which they fought or how horrific their actions in fighting for that cause. We killed a million Vietnamese during that war, Bill Ayers killed no one. Yes, Virginia, American soldiers did kill babies, too. Bill Ayers did not. Bill Ayers, and many others, threw away their chances to succeed in American politics because of the overriding need to do something, to do almost anything, to stop the war. Barack Obama was eight years old at the time. Barack Obama never expressed any sympathy for Ayers' actions, nor has he weighed in (as he could have in the first debate), as to Vietnam being a classic example of wars we should not fight (too bad).

Ayers went on to become a respected educator and lecturer on educational reform around the country. His meetings with Obama were fairly irregular and focused on educational initiatives of which both were members. I genuinely believe that as the American people look toward a dismal economic and environmental future, the question of whose acquaintances did what in the 60s is not high on anyone's list. But it is the last card that McCain has to play.

For us, as progressives, it is at least worth remembering those who fought to stop an immoral war, and to think of those who participated in one.

John McCain at a rally today:

John said, "Who is Barrack Obama?" The crowd yelled out "a terrorist".

It was better at Palin's. When she asked what do we do with Obama, people yelled out "Kill him".

I just watched these clips on TV. This is how low Palin and McCain have sunk.

Seems to me

that Ms. Sarah can now be arrested for inciting a riot.

Find clips of those events!

Seriously. Find clips and plaster them up everywhere. Incitement to riot, terrorism, sedition, and (possibly) treason. The g0p just completely destroyed their last best shot at holding onto anything to do with the government.

If Ayers is branded as a terrorist can we brand Todd Palin

a traitor for advocating Alaskan secession?
The last time that happened we ended up with 4 years of war and over 600, 000 dead.

thaelmann37

My thoughts exactly. I marched against the Vietnam War (non-violently) "back in the day", does that make me a terrorist too? The next thing you know, anyone who opposed LBJ and voted 3rd Party back then (which I did too!) can be implicated under Palin's "terrorists" umbrella. Yes, Todd Palin and his secessionists friends should be brought to trial for being Traitors. Why is it those who actively supported and helped the British during the Revolution were considered Traitors, but these thugs that have been shredding, ignoring and actually, violating the Constitution for the past 8 years (that we know about) want to be considered Patriots? "nuf said".
Thanks taelmann37

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.’

I agree

And Kuby would not even entertain this, how ridiculous. It gets very annoying when he says no no no, do not even go there. It is true, she was in bed with this guy literally, tell me he would have less influence over her than some guy who is helping your political career launch. Wake up, use it and make it make sense.

Arresting Todd

Nooooooooo, we can't do that, since the Alaska Director of Public Safety owes his job to Sarah, and his predecessor was fired for failing to carry out her personal vendettas.

We live in the Bizzaro World, where a media owned by the Right is accused of being "Left" by the Right so that Lefties will not become suspicious that the Right Media is not covering events impartially or fairly.

Let a relative of Barack Obama be shown to have been part of a seccessionist party, and you know what the only topic will be on the MSM until November 4.

But in the end, the economy sucks so bad that I don't think there's anything that McSame and Caribou Barbie can say that will make a difference in the outcome...except maybe "A No-Bid Government Contract" to the CEO of Diebold.

Gee, I worked with a guy that ended up commiting an armed

robbery of a bank. In McCainspeak, that means I must also be a bank robber. I spent far more time with this guy than Obama ever did with Ayers, so I guess I probably not only knew he was going to be robbing that bank, I probably sympathized with him and helped him plan the robbery. If I didn't, I should have, and my failure to know he was going to rob the bank means I couldn't handle responsibility.

That's the kind of bizarre, twisted "logic" we are seeing from the McCain campaign. I saw Linda Pfotenhauer, a McCain spokesperson on CNN this morning, and she said that we should be worried that Obama "hung out" with terrorists, (and she did use the plural, but no one from the campaign will clarify how many terrorists that really means). She was confronted with the fact that Obama never knew anything about Ayers' history, to which she replied that if he didn't, he couldn't be trusted to be president, because he should have known. How freaking desperate do you have to be to argue both sides of an issue? Pfotenhauer is the new incarnation of clueless Dana Perino.

Truth is whatever you can get other people to believe - Tom Smothers

You point, I'll whistle...

In the 1960s the G0P made the destruction of public schools a priority along with spreading the false idea that the vote really didn't matter. It took a score of years for the poor and deprived to start filtering into the society. Palin is no doubt a product of that depravity.

Bushie!  Doin' a helluva job!
G0P Trinity:  Failure, Fraud, Deceit.

Ron, I luv Ya, but

"Bill Ayers was engaged in the symbolic destruction of property in an effort to end the war."

There is nothing "symbolic" about setting off bombs. Agree with most of your points (and I haven't listened to ABC Radio since they kicked you off "Curtis & Kuby". Weather underground folks were also victims of that damn war partly because Ayers encouraged them to build bombs that they didn't know how to properly handle (talk about "forgotten victims").

Violence begets violence - as you well know. The end, when it came, came from the ballot box and a total repudiation of the warmonger Johnson, not from a bomb at the Pentagon.

I got gassed in D.C. along with a lot of other troopers in May of '70 (largest anti-war rally ever), and we didn't bat an eye.

Funny thing was 2 years later in Army basic training I was the only one walking out of the "tear gas room" with a smile on my face - seems you build up a resistance....Ha!

Has Sarah broken the law?

As far as I know, Ayers hasn't been charged with anything. He is NOT under investigation. He pays his taxes. He votes. He is an American citizen.

If he is attacked or threatened, would Sarah Palin be culpable? She has repeatedly called William Ayers a "terrorist" on National Television". Is this legal? Can she get away with saying that about someone?

I can't believe that if someone repeatedly called me a "terrorist" on national television, I would do nothing.

that was my first thought.

palin's pta politics are dangerous at the national and global level. crying witch and linking the president elect to terrorism is like shouting "fire!" in a crowded room. do you remember how many nut-jobs made attempts on bill's life?

No - You Can't

I have tried multiple google & even a lexis/nexis search - nothing comes up except some nut case firing off an M16 in front of the White House (the guy was tackled and disarmed by a tourist).

Of course you have no answer (as usual) - and unless you are trolling under an alias, the question was not for you anyways.

In other words, a fairly typical SJerk-seyIndy response.

Your concern trolling has become quite the bore, bushpuppy.

Even Bill Knows You're FOS.....

First "assassination" attempt
12 September 1994: Frank Eugene Corder flew a single engine Cessna into the White House lawn, apparently trying to hit the White House. The President and First Family were not home at the time. Corder was the only casualty.[16]

And he was drunk at the time.

Second "assassination" attempt
29 October 1994: Francisco Martin Duran fired at least 29 shots with a semi-automatic rifle at the White House from a fence overlooking the north lawn, thinking that Clinton was among the men in dark suits standing there (Clinton was in the White House Residence watching a football game). A tourist named Harry Rakosky tackled Duran before he could injure anyone. Duran was found to have a suicide note in his pocket and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.[17]

Clinton wasn't even aware of what happened until notified some nachos and guacamole dip later.

But don't take my word for it - in his own words: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28761.

Bill Clinton ponders his legacy in the den of his suburban New York home.

"All the great ones had someone take a crack at them," Clinton said. "Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Kennedy–even Reagan. An assassination attempt would have really elevated my status in the pantheon of presidents."

"Is this how I'm going to be remembered? As the president who wasn't worth a couple pot shots?" Clinton asked. "For God's sake, even Ford had Squeaky Fromme."

Clinton said an assassination attempt would have given the nation an opportunity to rally around its wounded leader.

"I would have inspired every American with my strength and bravery," Clinton said. "Giving the American people a heroic thumbs-up despite my side wound as they loaded me into the ambulance, attempting to walk before my doctors really wanted me to, passing legislation and signing executive orders from my hospital bed in Annapolis... I would have been terrific."

"The Reagan shooting, that made his presidency," Clinton said. "I still remember watching the coverage of it on TV back in Little Rock, thinking to myself, 'Man, that guy is playing this perfectly. Someday, I'm going to assure a shaken American people that it will take more than a bullet to stop me from leading this great nation.'"

Clinton Secretary of State Warren Christopher said he often tried to assure the president that he didn't need to be shot to be loved.

"I tried to tell him it's no big deal, that plenty of the great presidents never got shot at," Christopher said. "Like Washington. Besides, no one remembers Charles Guiteau shooting James Garfield. Or McKinley getting plugged by that Hungarian guy in Buffalo. But he just looks at me with these sad eyes."

Continued Christopher: "Then I reminded the president of Francisco Duran, the Army vet who took shots at the White House in 1994. All he could say was, 'Whoopee, someone shot at the White House while I was nowhere in the vicinity. That's really gonna secure my place in history.'"

firing off an M16 in front of the White House

Guess you've never seen what damage an M-16 can do to human tissue and bone. I have. It ain't pretty. A guy firing an M-16 off in front of the White House, regardless of who the occupant is, is a terrorist incident and should be considered an assassination attempt.

Would it be published?

I'm guessing you are talking about Bill Clinton? Is that something the Secret Service would publish? Last month, we arrested...

Look at how protected Bush is.

You know that when Obama was in Dallas in front of 17,000 people, the Secret Service ordered the metal detectors taken down and ordered, "No more searches"? Apparently, the Chief of Police and the Head of the Secret Service got into quite and argument. The Chief of Police wanted to know who gave the order, but the Secret Service would only say that it was from someone "higher up".

This story was published in two Dallas Newspapers.

I originally heard about the story from people that had been there who were very surprised that they could just walk right in without any kind of a check. So I did a search on " obama dallas no metal detectors no search " and the story popped up on Google. Go look if you don't believe me.

Has anyone said Palin is the most qualified VP in the Republican party?

When did Obama become responsible for every person in Chicago, and or everything any black person says? Beyond that, The U.S. did business with Bin Laden AND Saddam. Is anyone making pickett signs about that? nope. Saddam has a key to our city (Detroit Mi.) and has a building on 7 mile between I-75 and Woodward. I think people need to start looking into American History, then graduate into World History, the average "American Person" might be surprised.

unrelated.
Why won't the Democrats use McCain voting against raising minimum wage as a talking point? Or the fact the surge can only "work" if it turns up Weapons of Mass Destruction.. Remember? Thats the initial (lie) reason the Iraq (invasion) is even taking place... Or, is it to stabilize a gold mine of a land so we can have vacation retreats, Starbucks and Walmart there??

hmmmmmm.

What is in their brownies?

The "surge" worked if the plan was the destroy the Christian religion in Iraq and kill all the Christians.

Read the new Iraq Consitution. Islam is now the "national religion" and all laws will be based on "Islam".

Republicans are so stupid. They think that a country that has burned all it's churches and killed or driven away nearly all it's Christians will be friends with a country, US, which is 80% Christian. Could they be any more stupid?

And don't forget, Palin and McCain are white.

Seriously

Personally, I believe the Sarah Palin is the most qualified VP in the Republican Party.
Sorry.

Doesn't bode very well for the RepubliCANTs...

...does it? *snicker*

Actually, I thought Carly Fiorina would have been a better choice. But I guess McJukebox got convinced that he'd do better with a completely unqualified unknown. And now he's finding out exactly how doubleplusungood that selection was.

vacation retreats, Starbucks and Walmart

No. There was one reason and one reason only for the invasion of Iraq: because Dick Cheney's Energy Task Force said that it would be in Ameica's best interest to return Arab oil to the control of the Major Oil Companies.

Vacation retreats, Starbucks and Walmarts in Iraq will merely be a byproduct of the peace and freedom with which we have provided the Iraqis since 2003.

SHOULD OBAMA GO ON OFFENSIVE IN DEBATE?

ANSWER: NO

OBAMA'S BEST BET IS TO FIRMLY AND QUICKLY DISMISS MCCAIN'S ATTACK FOR WHAT IT IS, A FALSE POLITICAL SMEAR THAT IS BEING USED TO DRAW ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE REAL ISSUES IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

AYERS IS LIVING A LAW ABIDING LIFE AND IS AN ADVOCATE FOR EDUCATION. OBAMA DID NOTHING WRONG, AS HE MET WITH AYERS ON ISSUES AND UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH ARE COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE AND APPROPRIATE. JOHN MCCAIN IS A DEMAGOGUE ON THIS AND MANY OTHER ISSUES.

HOW DARE JOHN MCCAIN DO SUCH A THING WHEN REAL AMERICANS ARE SUFFERING.

OBAMA SHOULD LET HIS SURROGATES, (I.E. YOU AND ME), DO HIS REAL FIGHTING FOR HIM ON THIS ISSUE. AFTER ALL, THERE IS NO SHORTAGEOF AMMUNITION:

OBAMA DOES BEST ON THE DEFENSIVE WITH THIS ISSUE. THIS IS JUST THE REPUBLICAN DEATH RATTLE, SOON THEY WILL BE DEAD. SO LET JOHN MCCAIN HANG HIMSELF.

AND BY THE WAY:

IT IS A FACT THAT JOHN MCCAIN WAS CENSURED BY THE SENATE FOR ACTIONS HE TOOK ON BEHALF OF CHARLES KEATING, WHO LOOTED A SAVINGS AND LOAN IN THE 1980S WITH THE HELP OF JOHN MCCAIN AND HIS ILK

AND WE CAN DEMAGOGUE AS WELL AS PALIN: DIDN'T PALIN GIVE AN INTRODUCTORY SPEECH AT A RECENT ALASKA INDEPENDENCE PARTY CONVENTION, AN ORGANIZATION THAT ADVOCATES SECESSION OF THAT STATE FROM THE UNITED STATES. THIS MAY BE TREASON, AND IT MIGHT DISQUALIFY HER TO HOLD THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY, WERE SHE CALLED UPON TO DO SO.

Savings & Loan

And let's not forget that Neil Bush (W's brother) was also one of the thugs who ripped off the Savings & Loans -- another McCain tie to Bush?

Ron - I think you're great and usually agree with what you have to say. However, I'm so old, that the improper use of the language still bugs me, so I had to point out that this portion of your article; "(as he could of in the first debate)" "could of" is what the proper phrase "could have = could've" -- probably sounds like, but it's not the way you spell it!!!. Sorry to be so picky--chalk it up to having been educated in the '40's & '40's when commas were used and such errors took points off your final grade!

Deny what, asshole???

So some overzealous teacher put this together, so fucking what? Definitely inappropriate in a school setting, I'll agree. But for one thing, the message is pretty positive and affirmative--it certainly does not represent some blind obeisance to a cause as you wingnut shits try to to impute. Regardless, there is no way you or any other malkinite could tie this or any other effort to Obama's campaign. So, shoo shoo, little wingnut asshole, shoo shoo. . .

Dude, what are you smoking?

"Inappropriate in a school setting" - well, yeah, ya think?

Let's see a bunch of goose-stepping (oops, make that "marching") 12-13 year olds wearing military fatigues make hand salutes mouthing how they have been "inspired" by their leader to do great things...positive and affirmative?

Are you completely out of your friggin mind?

Maybe I missed the latino, white and Asian kids who were taking part - oh that's right, this is a single race thing.

I've seen this movie before - whoever is "teaching" this crap should be fired immediately. The scary part is the Superintendent only warned the teacher "not to post on the Internet". In other words, in school it's cool, just don't get caught.

Forget about the Obama campaign (who I'm sure had nothing to do with this), WTF is going on in our schools?

Hypocrisy, Palin smear

Wonder if the name: Raffello Folleri, convicted felon, former boyfriend of Anne Hathaway, and hob-nobber with John McCain rings a bell? Remember the photos of John McCain being welcomed onto Folleri's yacht for a birthday party in McCain's honor? Joined by the lobbyist that both McCain and Folleri used, McCain was feted with champaign, birthday cake, and the company of a famous actress. Why isn't this a headline? "Straight-talker falls off express into open arms of felon."

She Reads The NY Times?

I wonder if she happened to read their investigative report regarding McCain's lobbyist ties and their being on the take from FM/FM as recently as just last month despite denials to the contrary.

I also wonder if she pays any attention to news outlets in her home state?

She might find this to be some interesting reading:

WASHINGTON -- Federal prosecutors played audio recordings Monday of Sen. Ted Stevens and former VECO executive Bill Allen discussing their legal woes.
[...]

------------------------------
[...]
"Screw them, if they prove we did something wrong," the senator says in one of a series of secretly recorded telephone calls in the fall of 2006. "In my heart, I don't think we did. ... I say, screw it."

Stevens, unaware Allen already was cooperating with investigators, advises him, "We ought to really lay low right now." He also tells him to cut down on drinking, watch his health and await the outcome of the probe into more than $250,000 in renovations on the senator's cabin and other gifts provided by Allen's oil pipeline company, VECO Corp.

"Let's stick this thing out together, OK?" Stevens says.
[...]
"I think they're probably listening to this conversation right now," Stevens says in the recording.

"We might have to pay a fine and spend a little time in jail," he continues. "I hope it doesn't come to that."
[...]

Maybe now she can say she won't endorse him?
Because as recently as a week or so ago, she indicated a willingness to do so.

Birds of a feather...

Could anyone help me on this?

I haven't heard the full statement in which McCain talked about turning the page on the economy. I would like to have an idea of what the full context was before I built arguments around a misleading Point. For instance, Mccain could have just been saying that he wanted to turn the page in the sense of wanting to do it in the future, which is something we all want. I just want to be sure before I act on this and find myself being counterpointed with something I didn't know.

of course, i guess kuby could argue that those who tried to...

kill hitler with a bomb may have killed people who were against hitler. hmmmm? but hitler's staff meetings would be an entirely different target than the buildings that ayers targeted, i think. although i'm not sure which buildings ayers targeted.

I would agree that we have to keep an eye on her. I personally think she's a little more conniving and manipulative than she's given credit for. For instance, I think there's a good chance she dumbed down for those interveiws in order to look good in the debates without having to actually beat BIden. It was as if the Republicans were crafting some Rocky fairytail.

But at the same time, I think she's only back for the people who supported her in the first place. I don't think she'll be bringing any new converts into the fold. Not only that, I also believe that snide schoolgirl approach of hers is going to wear thin with undecideds. It's just so self-consciously clever, it's eventually got to get irksome.

It doesn't matter Scott:

First, if he were that deeply involved and had killed anyone, I seriously doubt he would be walking around. Nixon certainly would have gotten him somehow.

Secondly, even if he were that deeply involved, Obama had nothing to do with it.

Bush, for questionable motives, has managed to kill about 4700+ of our troops. Perhaps we should put a little more emphasis on McCain's association with him.

The fact is: this whole issue is little more than an extention of the Republican's either-you're-with-us-or-against-us use of patriotism as a tool of manipulation. They act as if our commitment to our country should be without condition. IT's the same approach taken by every despotic political system throughout history. And it reeks of the same authoritarianism that characterized those tyrranies.

i agree. bush and mccain are terrorists...

so is ayers.
