Death and dying in America are center stage with the Pope and Terri Schiavo. First, reflections on Pope John Paul II's passing with FRANCIS KISSLING, president of Catholics for Free Choice. Then we'll talk about what we've learned about some people's strange relationship with mortality and we'll unravel the right-wing conspiracy to make the most of the Terry Schiavo case. Conservative foundations, resuscitating Operation Rescue and the Vatican's hidden hand all played a part. Pro-choice protester SUNSARA TAYLOR tells us how she braved the hospice barricades. Investigative journalist FRED CLARKSON describes the religious right's organizing. Finally, extraordinary jazz singer CHERYL BENTYNE on her new CD featuring the swing and bebop music of Anita O'Day.

Veterans Group Calls on Congress to Impeach George W. Bush and Richard Cheney
NATIONAL NEWS:
Veterans Group Calls on Congress to Impeach George W. Bush and Richard Cheney
SOURCE: Veterans For Peace, Inc.
ST. LOUIS--On March 30, a national veterans organization called for the removal of President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney for crimes the group charges were committed during the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
In a letter sent to each member of the US House and Senate, Veterans For Peace (VFP) stated that ...This administration war on Iraq, in addition to being increasingly unpopular among Americans, is an unmistakable violation of our Constitution and federal law which you have sworn to uphold. In our system, the remedy for such high crimes is clear: this administration must be impeached.
David Cline, a decorated Vietnam War combat veteran and VFP president, said in a prepared statement to the press, "We do not make this call lightly and as former members of the US armed forces, we take our responsibilities as citizens very seriously. For that reason we believe that when our government conducts a war of aggression on Iraq and commits a growing and appalling series of what must legally be considered war crimes and crimes against humanity in the execution of that war, it violates Article VI of the US Constitution, the War Crimes Act of 1996 (18 U.S.C. 2441), and numerous international treaties which are legally binding on our nation."
Cline continued, "We are not the first group to call for impeachment. We have decided to add our voice to the call. All the reasons given for the invasion have shown themselves to be half-truths or misleading. The conflict continues to drag on taking the lives of our soldiers and innocent Iraqis. It is clear that George Bush does not intend to change course in an effort to right this great wrong. He has had enough time in his second term to begin a shift and he has not. It is time to remove him from office."
Veterans For Peace is seeking individual and organizational supporters to work jointly on the effort to impeach the resident.

'Culture of Life' is a Culture of Fear
by Ira Chernus
The tragic case of Terri Schiavo writes a new chapter in the ongoing American saga that is often titled “the culture war.” It’s no longer just about a so-called “right to life.” The Christian right insists that it’s about a “culture of life.” They’ve been waving that slogan around for years. Now mainstream America is getting used to it. Those of us who actively oppose the Christian right had better get used it, too. We’re going to be hearing a lot about this “culture of life” from now on.
“Culture of LIFE?” we ask, with justified outrage. These same people who claim to be the guardians of life are the first to demand the death penalty for murderers, indiscriminate bombing for Afghanis, Iraqis, and anyone else they don't like, etc., etc. The hypocrisy is so blatant, it hardly seems worth spelling out the details.

CAFTA's Profit Motive
By Harold Meyerson
Wednesday, March 30, 2005; Page A15
Spreading democracy is one thing. But do we really want America to be known for spreading the pricing practices of our drug companies?
In Guatemala, the United States has become the sales rep for the pharmaceutical industry. Citing urgent public health concerns, the Guatemalan legislature enacted a law last year that permitted the marketing of generic drugs alongside their brand-name equivalents. Citing the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), whose ratification congressional committees will begin to consider next week, the U.S. trade representative then told the Guatemalans that any such drug legislation would stop CAFTA dead in its tracks. If the five Central American nations (plus the Dominican Republic) that had signed CAFTA wanted it ratified, Guatemala would have to repeal the new law. Reluctantly, Guatemala obliged.

Two more Republicans against CAFTA
WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - Two more congressmen from President George W. Bush's Republican Party declared on Tuesday they would not vote for a new free trade agreement with five Central American countries and the Dominican Republic.
The declaration came as Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez warned that rejection of the U.S.-Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) would send a troubling message to the rest of the world about the United States' commitment to free trade.
The Bush administration has been expected to submit CAFTA to Congress for a vote sometime this spring.

Guatemala Harvests Bad Old Days over CAFTA
Thursday, 31 March 2005, 9:06 am
Overall, both CAFTA and NAFTA are based on the logic that the end justifies the means—a rationale which puts revenue and short-term profit ahead of human rights, environmental sustainability and decent living standards. Critics argue that the neoliberal reforms carried out by the governments end up facilitating one goal: the further concentration of wealth among the rich, regardless of its effects on the destitute sections of the populace.

Laura,
I welcome your thoughts on John Paul II and death in general.
I spent some time in the seminary and worked with the church as a lay liturgist.
A theologian friend of mine said, "Christianity as a religion by and large died around the 7th
century when the Church endorsed the Just War, accepted wealthy people into the
Church, and removed women from clerical duties. What survived is a series of
Churches which have been more or less faithful to the Gospel (mostly less). But
Christianity has survived through dedicated individuals and religious communities who
have always tried to recapture the roots of the early Church."
Personally I believe that the Roman Catholic Church doesn't understand sex and life, and can't handle it.

GUATEMALA: Two die, CAFTA ratified
GuatemalaÂ’s president ratified the US-Central America Free Trade Agreement on March 15, hours after police killed two activists in a violent attempt to break up a protest calling for a referendum on the trade agreement. By lowering US tariffs, CAFTA is likely to threaten the livelihoods of small farmers and increase unemployment and may exacerbate the countryÂ’s food shortages. In the week before the vote, Guatemala was racked by some of the biggest protests in the countryÂ’s history, occurring simultaneously in the countryÂ’s cities and rural areas.
The shootings happened in the north-eastern province of Huehuetenango, as police opened fire on the dispersing protest. Across the country, water cannon loaded with dye and tear gas were used against protesters. El Salvador and Honduras have also ratified the agreement, which leaves Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the United States yet to do so.

Dean blasts Santorum at Philadelphia fund-raiser
By Frederick Cusick
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean ripped into U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum at a party fund-raiser in Old City tonight.
Dean, a former Vermont governor and former Democratic presidential candidate, called Santorum, a Republican who is up for reelection in Pennsylvania in 2006, a "liar" and "right-winger" who actually lives in Virginia.
"He doesn't tell the truth," Dean told a gathering of about 150 at Bluezette on Market Street.
Dean said Santorum had voted to kill Amtrak, an important service in Pennsylvania, and had then turned around and written a piece for The Inquirer saying he supported Amtrak.
He said that Santorum should return the more than $100,000 that Santorum's declared home school district, the Penn Hills School District in Allegheny County, paid over the last few years to educate his children at the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School.
While attending the school online, Santorum's children actually lived at his house in the Virginia suburbs of Washington. The charter school and the Penn Hills district are in a dispute over payments for Santorum's children. Santorum has maintained that he has followed the law.
Dean joked that Santorum should "stay in Virginia," although he added that the senator was "too much of a right-winger for Virginia. How about Venezuela?"
Dean, whose defeat in the 2004 Democratic presidential primaries was attributed to the belief that he was too liberal to defeat President Bush in the general election, appeared to be trying to reassure the party activists gathered at Bluezette that he had learned his lesson. He called on them to use less confrontational language with those socially conservative Democrats who deserted the party last year to vote for Bush.
"We are not the pro-abortion party," Dean said, repeating the old Bill Clinton line that "abortion should be safe, legal and rare."
"We need to organize," Dean said. "We can't run a campaign for president in 20 states and be a national party."
The party chairman said Democrats need "message discipline." He said they should for the present forgo the satisfaction of attacking House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's ethics problems or the controversy over what he called the Bush administration's government-paid "propaganda" and focus on attacking Bush's plan to create private Social Security accounts.
Polls show the proposal is unpopular.
"We're on a roll with Social Security," Dean said. "We need to focus on this, and we need to keep the focus on it."

The Schiavo case is apparently having a horrible effect on the rate of admissions to hospice programs. That is the real tragedy that has come from this situation. No one in the media dared to shine a light on the beauty that is hospice care. No on dared to speak of the fact that death is a part of life and that hospice can make that experience peaceful and as free from suffering as is humanly possible.
If the legacy of Terri Schiavo is that doctos will now be more resistant than they already are about hospice (being as 80%+ of them completely misunderstand the purpose or the requirements or the costs and 80%+ of them hate the idea of hospice as they see it as an admission of failure), hospice care will be set back 25 years -- which is how long that it has been available in the US.

According to Imperial Doctrine, the goverment exists for the sake of the rich. Nationalized health care violates that doctrine and can't be allowed. To make a profit health care must be privatized.

The AAR feed seems to be cutting out on Sirius. I wonder if they're getting rain fade. We're getting a major downpour in the New York area.

I am Episcopalian and don't like the restrictive nature of the Catholic Church. I am very offended by their vilification of "feminism" and I think it is ridiculous that women cannot be priests.
According to the Bible the first woman "apostle was Mary Magdelaine. An apostle is "one who is sent to tell of Jesus' resurrection" The first person Jesus saw when he rose from the dead was Mary Magdelaine and he said to her "go and tell the others" Despite this, the Catholic Church sites as support for their view that women can't be priests the fact that there are no female apostles or disciples.
My mother is an Episcopal Priest and beloved by everyone in the church. Nearly every time she gives a sermon someone comes up to me or a member of my family to tell us how her sermon was "the best sermon they have ever heard" But the Catholic church would rather have male priests who end up molesting the altar boys and someone like my mother.

The celbacy of priests started as a means to thwart dynastic control of the church. It has taken on a sort of Pauline sacrifice for the sake of purity or some such nonsense.

That blows that theory. It's very overcast here today and I just assumed (yes I made an ass outta Uma) it was the weather that was making my Sirius signal flutter.. Usually when that happens if I check the antennae aiming the terristerial signal is zilch FWIW.
