Sarah Palin is McCain's VP!

I’M SORRY…SARAH WHO??!
By Dermott McCallscreener
Breaking news, evra-buddeh – John McCain has picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. What’s the tactic here? Who is the McCain campaign playing to with this “WTF” pick?
Are we witnessing a rare Republican Machine miscalculation? Or will a healthy dose of soccer-mom spin make this work for McCain?
Post your thoughts and reactions below.

By AuntBee-DCAugust 29, 2008 - 12:06pmSeems to me the political
Seems to me the political calculus that's going on here is that by choosing a woman, they can siphon off enough Hillary supporters to pull out a win.
They were probably looking at the polls that said 2 out of 10 Hillary supporters would vote for McCain. They probably took that as just bitterness over their candidate loosing, they wouldn't actually VOTE for McCain in those numbers... would they? Maybe now with a woman on the ticket, they will. Scary if it does happen, but it might.
Obama needs to do something IMMEDIATELY to counter this. So does Hillary. She needs to become much more vocal and active in the Obama campaign to assure the number of her supporters who do cross over to McCain is minimal.

But, I think the McBush camp is doing enough all on its own ... didn't the Alaska legislature vote for an investigation of her for 'abuse of office'?
Gotta hand it to the GOP - they are consistent ...

and fired someone who refused to fire her brother-in-law, a state trooper who is going through a nasty divorce and child custody case with her sister. She also is a big supporter of drilling in ANWR, and best of all, she had plenty of experience running the major.....ok, it's actually something of a flyspeck called Wasilla. Just when you think the repubs can't find any more people totally incapable of doing the jobs they have, like Brownie, they are able to dig up Palin.
You learn a lot about a candidate by the people they choose to surround themselves with, people who will help them and advise them. Obama chose someone with 35 years of experience in the Senate, in the Judiciary and Foreign Affairs. McCain chose the mayor of Wasilla.

By Pookie2112August 29, 2008 - 2:02pmThis is such a transparent ploy by Crash McGrandpa to try
and pull in disaffected Hillary supporters, and in doing so, he has actually taken away the one point they keep trying to use against Obama---experience. Compared to Palin, Obama is a seasoned veteran. She has been in office less than two years, running a state that has less population than a lot of major US cities, and isn't even the kind of repub that conservatives get all warm and fuzzy about.
Let's face it, McCain's VP pick is more important for him than for most previous presidential candidates because of his age and because of some concerns raised about his mental acuity. If repubs want to chant the mantra that Obama isn't prepared to be president, how the hell can they claim that Palin is?
Thank you, Crash, for crashing your own campaign. Not only do we have the prospect of Obama absolutely demolishing McCain in the presidential debates, we can also enjoy Biden completely overshadowing Palin in the VP debate. Make mine a double popcorn, please!

There is NO WAY Hillary supporters, supporters that love HILLARY are going to GIVE Hillary's historic climb to this no-name, PRO-LIFE, chick from Alaska. GET REAL!
I'll tell you something else, a lot of Republicans are INSULTED that McCain picked "this" woman (Palin) as opposed to Kay Hutchinson.
As for the Evangelical far right - THEY do NOT like women's rights. THEY are not going to like a woman with 5 kids NOT raising her children if she were VP.
As for the military vote: The military will NOT want this chick being a heart beat away from the Presidency. TALK ABOUT NO FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE... SHE HAS NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT FOREIGN POLICY!

to think that the mccain campaign thinks that the woman on the ticket is interchangeable is completely insulting! that women can't tell the difference between them! AHHH!
i liked hillary for her views and her positions and her experience, not just because she was a woman. im so insulted by the mccain campaign's choice, i don't know what to do with myself.

It's good to hear this sentiment coming from a woman. Unfortunately, there are plenty of women who do feel that the woman on the ticket is interchangeable. I have spoke with several. You can also go to hcsfjm[dot]com and witness many there.
In fact, my only experience with Hillary supporters (not counting hufflarry2000, who really doesn't count for anything) are the ones who will vote for any woman simply because "it's time".
Again, thanks for being a rational woman.

i have been for obama since half way through the primaries. even though i would have loved hillary, i knew there was too much against her. im definitely not the normal hillary supporter who didnt decide to support obama until recently.
i think that the way to get this to backfire on mccain and palin is to get the hillary supporters mad. get them mad that the mccain camp thought palin could compare to clinton. i really think if we could start the idea that this is insulting to former hillary supporters, then this could backfire on the republicans.

By streethandsAugust 29, 2008 - 12:59pmI'm worried now.
The first thing I thought when I saw McCain had picked a female was Oh Crap.
I know this is based on limited exposure to Hillary supporters and will probably sound misogynist but I'm talking about gut reaction here so...
I've met several Hillary supporters and the only reason they gave for supporting her was because she was a woman. They all thought it was time for a female president. Never any talk of her policies or political practices. So with this pick, I really believe that the number of Hillary supporters voting for McCain will most likely rise significantly. It doesn't matter who she is, what her policies are, what scandals she has been involved in, etc. The same people that supported Hillary just because she was a woman will flock to McCain now.
I'm saying this because the only Hillary supporter I have ever met supported her only because she was a woman (I don't want to ever meet hufflarry2000).
Oh Crap. Eight is enough but there may be four more...
We've got some work to do.

By ObfuscatorAugust 29, 2008 - 12:35pmDon't fret about this...instead, rejoice
Like I mentioned below, her selection has actually had the opposite effect, pissing off a lot of Hillary supporters.
Second, take notice about this thread.....it's troll-free. What does that tell you? That the diehard 20%ers who support Bush and McCain aren't exactly jumping up and down for joy at the pick. Not only did Crash NOT energize his core constituency with this pick, he alienated a large group he had hoped to pick up, Hillary supporters.
The biggest danger now is trying too hard to make her look pathetic. Look how that worked in 2000 and 2004, when Gore and Kerry obliterated Bush in every single debate. The public reacted with sympathy for poor old Chimpy. Dems shouldn't work hard to discredit her. Just seeing her on a stage next to Biden, discussing how tough it was to run the burg of Wasilla, AK, while Biden talks about calling Milosovic a war criminal to his face should be more than enough.

It seems that the most corrupt and most inept administration in the history of America wishes to be followed by an even more corrupt and inept administration. So why not pick a women who is under investigation for abuse of power and who has less executive experience than Brownie? It seems to me that it is a signal from McSame and the Republican party that they have absolutely no respect for the American people. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that lack of respect is justified.

This would be hilarious if it weren't so terrifying. Palin's only complete political experience is 2 terms as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska -- population 5,740. So, with McCain having 1 foot in the grave, does *anybody* want her finger on the nuclear button...does anyone think she could stand up to Putin? Does anyone think she has the experience to deal with terrorism, the wars on crime/poverty/drugs?
This is kind of like Dick Wolf's Law 'n Order Criminal Intent. (That is) we're giving you this piece of crap and you're going to like it because WE are the decision-makers and YOU are not.
It didn't work with LnOCI and it won't work here but THIS is a lot scarier because the stakes are obviously much higher and there's always the remote possibility that McCain/Palin COULD win.

By proudlyprogressiveAugust 29, 2008 - 12:49pmReaction, Indeed
Because if there is one word that can sum up this pick, it is: Reactionary.
What is John McCain thinking?
He just spent the past month and more attacking his opponent for being “inexperienced” on military, foreign policy and national security affairs. An opponent who has been a US Senator and part of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs for more than three years.
Now Senator McCain has tapped for second in command a Governor of less than two years?
Did Senator McCain simply forget what Candidate McCain has been saying recently?
What is he thinking?
Clearly he is not thinking.
He is reacting.
I would like to say that it shows a clear lack of judgment on the candidate’s part.
But there was no judgment on his part involved.
Someone else (**coughKarlRovetypecough**) judged that a long list of needs had to be met, some of which among them were likely:
They needed to shake up a race that was a sure loss.
They needed to be on the right side of history.
They need to counter the opposition bio.
They needed to change the narrative.
They needed to try and pull votes from Obama from anywhere they could to even have a chance at winning (and it would appear they judged their best chance is women who just wanted to see a woman in the White House).
They judged this is who they needed to try and meet those needs.
They told Senator McCain this was his VP.
And he reacted.
By saying: “Yes, sir, Mr. Rove.”
John McCain: Yes man.
Yes to George Bush.
Yes to Karl Rove.
Yes to four more years of the same.
Four more years of the same old politics.
The same politics by Republican strategists who brought us their marketing product:
the Iraq debacle.
And now, here they are with their new marketing product: Palin.
But why, from a marketing point of view, did they introduce their new product in August?
Because, they weren’t thinking.
They were reacting.
Things is: I think they might just be misjudging the reaction to their reaction.
Time will tell.

By ObfuscatorAugust 29, 2008 - 2:26pmWhat a sexist comment
streethands, I find your reaction very sexist. In fact, I find most of the comment I have read on this thread sexist. I have not heard a lot about about her yet. I assume you all feel that she was voted Governor of Alaska because she is a woman. She was picked because she is a woman. I would think that the conservative machine would have thought this through. She is a relative new-comer to politics and younger than Obama. After the comments McCain has made about Obama, she must have some qualities that will overcome the similarities of age and experience. There must be something about her that he believes will overcome the attacks that are sure to begin from Obama's camp.
Then again maybe Republicans are just as shallow as Democrats.
- Email this page
By KerwinChaseAugust 29, 2008 - 12:52pmhow?
how is my reaction sexist? i have no idea how she was voted governor, but that also has nothing to do with my comment. and yes, i do feel she was chosen because she is a woman. the republicans had to shake things up, and they are trying to appeal to women who want a woman in the white house. what's sexist is that they picked her for that reason.
- Email this page
By streethandsAugust 29, 2008 - 1:10pmBecause...
you automatically assume the only reason she was chosen is because she is a women. She must not be a capable person. Everyone here is saying it is only because she is a woman. I am sure that her political view would not match yours. If she was Obama's running mate would you automatically assume the same thing?
I, by the way, am undecided as to who to vote for, in case you were assuming something about me. I am not a big fan of either candidate.
As I said, the political machine of the Republican leadership would have to know the arguments the left would start to throw. I think the machine is crafty enough that they must have other reasons for choosing her. I don't believe that the machine is crafty and stupid. They have proven themselves to be very smart. (note that I did not say good.) I would tend to believe it is more related to her "maverick" leanings that she was chosen. Fighting against the "Bridge to nowhere". You have to admit that was the correct position.

Sarah Palin, the 44 year old Governor of Alaska, is under investigation to find if she fired Alaska’s Public Safety Commissioner because he refused to fire Mike Wooten, her ex brother-in-law. Mike Wooten who worked as a state trooper is divorced from Sarah Palin’s sister.

She may or may not have. I don't know.
I do know that Republicans hate gays. See Phyllis Shafley and Mrs. Keyes and well, the list goes on.
If Republicans pass gay rights legislation, they didn't understand it, it was a mistake.
Remember, these are the people that have kicked out hundreds of gays during a time of war, gays in critical mission jobs. Even threatening our sons and daughters by kicking out Arabic translators. Putting them in danger because someone might "see" them in the shower. Republicans would rather seen them dead than know they were "seen".
It's like with the Jews and the Palestinians. A famous quote, "There will never be peace until the Palestinians love their children more than they hate the Jews".
Many Christians don't even know where gays come from. They must be immigrants or something. They don't believe that since a majority of America's population is Christians, the majority of gays come from Christian families. I've read Chrisian blogs. They do not believe that gays come from
Christian families.

She lives in a state without managed healthcare, subsidies for all residents from the oil companies, and isolation from the realities of urban life. How can she possibly be ready to serve in this capacity after less than two years as the governor of Alaska. You call this "change"!! It makes me so mad that the repubs would insult our intelligence this way. But then again, they've been insulting us for the last 8 years. I'm really afraid that McCain will win, then become incapacitated and we'll have Ms. Palin as our next President. Isn't that thought frightening enough to push everyone to vote for Barack? Your attempts to sew discontent and division will not push Democratic women to support a candidate who thinks it's funny when they are referred to as "bitches". And they won't be pushed to support a candidate who refers to his own wife as a "trollop" and "cunt". And they won't be pushed to support a candidate who jokingly refers to the rape of women.

I'll cop to being surprised.
Never in a million years did I imagine a man who:
-- opposes equal pay for women
--opposes a woman's right to make decisions regarding her own body
--voted against requiring health care plans to cover birth control
--voted against comprehensive, medically accurate sex education
--voted against international family planning funding
--voted against funding to prevent teen and unintended pregnancies
--voted against public education for emergency contraception
--voted against restoring Medicaid funding that could be used for family planning for low-income women
--thinks it's funny when women leaders like Hillary Clinton are referred to as "bitch"es
--refers to his own wife as a "trollup"
--refers to his own wife as a "cunt"
--makes joking, mocking references toward female victims of rape
...never in a million years did I think that a guy who hates women would make one his veep.
But I guess he only hates them until he needs them for something...
...like cleaning up his mess and cooking him up something he's unable to cook up himself...

By azmtnbkr1August 29, 2008 - 1:08pmMaybe you need to clean the manure out of your ears, farmer
The sound you are hearing is laughter and celebration. Crash McGrandpa couldn't have made a worse VP pick if he had thrown darts at a dartboard while blindfolded. Maybe he just picked her name at random out of a phone book.
Thank you, Gramps, for handing Obama the election in a landslide. Thank you for also destroying the only point you seemed to score on Obama up till now, experience. Picking a VP who will stand a good chance of taking over for your deteriorating ass that has no experience at all, even compared to Obama, was a stroke of genius. Now you have less than NOTHING to use.
Of course, maybe he's really picking her to be a replacement for Beer Queen Cindy. We know McCain likes to change wives when they no longer are young enough and pretty enough for him. At least Palin looks like a flesh and blood human being instead of a Barbie doll in a sling, right Johnnie?

rather than her only claim to fame as being a community organizer, voting "present" 137 times in the IL Legislature, best friend to a mad bomber, and done absolutely nothing in the Senate.
Oh, and don't forget Jeremiah Wright

By Old_Farmer_McLeftyAugust 29, 2008 - 1:28pmYou know, both of these
You know, both of these ideas are really silly. You shouldn't bring up Senate voting records when McCain has the worst record of all sitting Senators. You see, McCain missed 63.8% of the votes in the 110th Congress. He even did worse than Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) who suffered a brain hemorrhage on Dec. 13, 2006, and spent several months recovering. But when McCain did show up, he voted in line with Bush 95% of the time.
So McCain has the worst attendance record, but at least he has the best absence record.

And do you really think that a person who is the Democratic nominee for President of the greatest country in the world has done nothing? Really?!

By SJerseyIndyAugust 29, 2008 - 1:13pmA War Against Women In Politics
McCain's choice for VP is a calculated attack on women in politics. This is a perfect example of how conservatives work to guarantee that groups of people whom they don't fundamentally want to support remain fundamentally unsupportable. Palin is not the least bit qualified for the job. She is being hauled out in front of the party and when she and McCain lose the NeoCons will be able to sit back and say 'we tried to run a woman and look what happened'. Never mind that she wasn't in a position to be successful.

By noisegirlAugust 29, 2008 - 1:04pmSo it's come to this...
Nominating a woman is now a "War on Women".
I can't wait to see her up against Mr. "Plain Vanilla" Insider in the debates!

How the women out there tolerate the men here that feel women are second rate.
Read the diatribes and see the knuckle draggers out there in your party that degrade, chastise, belittle, resort to posting photos and making chrass, mean comments.
These are the men that represent the women in the Democratic party.
Ladies, shut your pie hole or they will shut it for you.

I have to assume this is just a really horrible joke. An obvious McCain supporter projecting onto Democrats. Seriously, a McCain supporter saying Democrats feel women are second rate? A supporter of a candidate who fells that Viagra should be covered by health insurance but not birth control? A supporter of a candidate that is trying to say that birth control is abortion? A supporter of a candidate who calls women cunt and trollop? Yes, this is just a very sad joke.

Concern trolls abound, indeed. But be thankful for their presence.
They provide ample opportunity for brushing up on ridiculing one-liners.
Take the Arizona Mountain Biker, azpdpllr1, for example. This dimwitted dittodolt has more gaps in his sentences than his inbred mother/sister has in her teeth.

By roadgoddessAugust 29, 2008 - 2:18pmI LOVE this pick!
This was a genius move on SO MANY levels!
Remember when being a Washington outsider was a big plus in the primaries? Well she is now the only one in the race. Oblahma talks about "change", than picks a Washington insider that was in Washington when Oblahma was still in diapers. McCain talks about change and picks someone that represents change.
She is a fresh face in the race, there isn't a shit load of video of her trash talking McCain like there is with the dems. She b
