Jimmy LaSalvia of the Log Cabin Republicans talks with Lionel about why he is a gay republican.
When we look at McCain and Obama they are the same?
I listened today to the babble of this misguided young man who thought it was cute to say there was no difference in what Obama was offering homosexuals as a group and what McCain said he was willing to do tonight.
When I listened to Obama he talked about inclusion and no matter what it is called the ability for same sex individuals to join in a union and share in the same benefit as any person in this country was clear that it was inclusion and an effort at equality. That a person should never be blocked from being with the one they love was important. No longer would a couple of same sex have to beg to be together if one was in the hospital dying should never happen again. Now I don't agree with calling it something that makes Obama or some of the short sighted individual comfortable. It is a union, the same union that others of opposite sex join in as our government has no religious ceremony to perform or no assigned group to perform a marriage in case you don’t have a strong faith or for some odd reason don’t believe. If I find a church that accepts my sexuality and the head of the group bonds me with my partner and they call that marriage then I am married in the eyes of my church. I don’t need government approval.
McCain tonight offers us nothing. I suspect his effort will be to create a constitutional barrier to never allow an equal status for homosexuals. He will only reinforce the same bigotry that has existed over time though tempered to a degree I expect to see it swell again. The day of faggots tied behind a truck might not be so far off with McCain’s plan in place.
Log Cabin Republican think these positions are the same. Their perception that McCain will stand by gays and not sign a ban on gay marriage is foolish and simple minded. If he won’t state it why would he have any interest in doing it? Their goal to stand by them because he was against the first ban on marriage with all of the domestic issues he has flipped on just shows how low they would sink to support their party rather than their personal dignity and interests.
