Today's TRMS

By Vanessa Silverton-Peel

The bail out bill has failed. Why did it fial? Well, according to Republicans it's because their feelings were hurt by that big ol' mean Democrat, Nancy Pelosi. So on today's show Rachel will be talking to economist Dean Baker about why he thinks the crisis doesn't warrent a bail out of this magnitude. And then David Bender stops by to talk about the McCain-Obama debate last week and the upcoming Palin-Biden debate on Thursday.

Well

I'm no economist and have seen the pro's and con's of this bailout, but now that it has failed it seems that the market is reacting in obscene drops. The Dow is down over 688 right now and other indicators are in panic mode. Is this bad? Sure seems like it to me, but what does it mean to us, to the everyday kind of voter who needs credit to buy their new car or other large purchases.

Both sides are blaming the other so the one thing I can say at this point is that our government is most decidedly BROKEN. This is what happens when a political party and administration makes partisanship the order of the day; it infiltrates everything, even those measures that might just mean life and death to some.

We will see...

"partisanship the order of the day" Thus capitulate 2 BANKRUPTCY

If only your shallow narrow-minded naive analysis were true. Then the populace majority could simply vote the bums out and fix the system.

Am I wrong in that, you think electing BHO will correct the underling festering root cause of the current socio economic dilemma? If you even understood that the FRB IMF WTO, etc. are instruments used by the global rulers to maintain conflict that assures their dominance since they also set the rules for multinational corporate intercourse and are the greatest beneficiary of the WAR ON DRUGS, which now has resulted in 1 of 5 being behind bars in USA, then you might have noticed that this political circus is a just a diversionary game.

Or is that your mission, to further the absorption of bullshit rhetoric that accomplishes nothing toward the abolition of the PRIVATELY OWNED FRB,
or the general acceptance that 100 employment labor and scarcity are no longer the primary obstacles to peaceful evolutionary progress?

BTW:
While you were distracted by the crash and burn Palin Couric interview, did you happen to catch the details of the $25 BILLION just given to GM for our benefit? I thought not.

WHEREAS, the Federal Reserve Board is now empowered under Section 13 of the Federal Reserve Act to reform monetary policy to discourage non-productive and speculative uses of credit, to encourage accelerated rates of private sector growth, and to promote widespread individual access to productive credit as a fundamental right of citizenship;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Congress amend the Federal Reserve Act to require the Federal Reserve Board to stop monetizing government debt through its buying and selling of U.S. Treasury securities, and to begin re-activating its discount mechanism to encourage private sector growth linked to expanded ownership opportunities for all Americans.

TO THIS END, we hereby petition the Federal Reserve Board to adopt a two-tiered money-creation and credit policy that sharply distinguishes between ownership-expanding productive capital credit, and ownership-concentrating, non-productive and speculative uses of credit. The upper tier, reflecting the higher market costs of borrowing “old money” from existing domestic and foreign savings pools and existing assets, should continue to be maintained as a source of market-rate credit to public-sector borrowers, consumers, speculators, and for all other non-productive purposes. The Federal Reserve discount rate for the lower tier should be reduced for interest-free “new money” to no higher than 0.5 percent, to cover the Fed's cost of administering the linkage between growth in the overall money supply with ownership-broadening, non-inflationary productive growth in the U.S. economy.

This new reservoir of Federal Reserve monetized credit should be reserved exclusively for commercial bank members of the Federal Reserve System to the extent they in turn make available in equal periodic allotments to every citizen through “Capital Homestead Accounts” (Special IRAs) direct access to capital credit at reasonable service charges and risk premiums, with prime rates set by market forces above the Fed discount rate to its member banks. Such expanded bank credit should not be subsidized by the taxpayers, and should be backed and collateralized by the newly acquired assets and private sector credit insurance to cover the risk of default.

Yep

Their feelings were hurt. Yeah, that was exactly how I was describing it, too. A politician put a political spin on something and that's worth changing their vote? That's basically admitting that what's best for the country isn't the prime thing that affects their votes.

What a lame excuse.

Not that the Democrats did much better. They had 60%, but *only* 60%. As this site shows, the prime determining factor in how Congressmen voted was how shaky they felt about their reelection campaigns.

DRATS, double post!

The Repblicans FAILED to do what they promised to do 4 this bill

For those of us who would like to read the text of Pelo's speech, here it is in all of its glory. Please note, I have read and reread this piece and I see NO inflammatory language within it unless the Republican's still want to argue that it was the Bush administration who caused this fiasco, and if so they will have one heck of an argument with the American public.

DEBATE

Hi Racheal, It is impossible to get a call to you, always busy. I agree with everything you say on the debate as to what was said by Senator's Obama and Mc Cain. But I saw something else. After watching my dad suffer for 10 years and finally die from Alzshimers disease and having my mom suffer several mini strokes I recognized some signs of Senator Mc Cain having the symptoms. When you look at Senator Mc Cain the right side of his face seems a bit off. While some may attribute this to the physical abuse while being a POW I see visible signs of having maybe had a stoke or several. I also see him get a far away look o his face from time to time when asked a question. My day had this same far away look even in the early stages of alzseimers. I am a Obama supporter all the way but the thought of having a candidate for president with these symptoms is scary and I hope it is a concern to others and I am not the only one who sees this. WHERE ARE HIS MEDICAL RECORDS? Thanks for listening. Marilyn from Welaka, Florida

McCain's condition

The stuff going on with McCain's face is partly because of the surgeries done to it. On one side they had to cut into it and remove some lymph nodes about 7 years ago. The other side has had a little skin removed just recently, something that he's had done several times now.

I completely agree about releasing his medical records, however. Though there seems to be reasonable explanations for why his face is the way it is, we can't say for certain without more detail. Giving reporters just a few hours to review a mountain of documents was screwy. That's not nearly enough time to pour over the records and crosscheck for inconsistencies. I don't know that they're hiding anything, but they made it look like they are.

Au Contraire

Jason,
Many of John's most recent physical foibles are not about his past surgeries but are recent noticeable oddities. His left eye is drooping more than ever before and his speech the other morning on THIS WEEK was strikingly odd; with him lisping, a slurring of his words, acting in a much more erratic manner along with his face being far more puffy than usual.

What people are talking about NOW is not about his past surgeries, it is about his "odd" behavior and what is currently going on with his facial "ticks". These are ALL than enough reason for the public to see his records as it is with all Presidential candidates, however it does not seem to be a request that the McCain campaign plans to honor. I wonder why....

I hadn't really noticed

I hadn't really noticed anything popping up all that suddenly. So far it just seemed like the kind of stuff that happens as someone gets older.

I'll keep my eye on him next time and look for the things you mentioned.

Ask bender Why Mccain Called Bin Laden a 'Freedom Fighter'

In the debate McCain praised the 'Freedom Fighters' who drove the Russians out of Afghanistan. He was effectively referring to Bin LAden the most prominent of the mujahadeen or as McCain called them 'Freedom Fighters'

bailout

Now, we should all understand why the Bushies (McCain) wanted to privatize our Soc. Sec. They knew way back then, that Wall St. was in trouble. They figured that the public was stupid enough to believe them when they said that investing our Soc. Sec. in Wall St. was a great thing. I bet they figured all those billions from Soc. Sec. would rescue Wall St. and this implosion would come under the next Pres. Just remember folks, McCain voted for investing our Soc. Sec. into Wall St. Obama voted against it. Damn those idiots in Washington

Unbelievable

Congress voted down the bail out because Nancy Pelosi may have "insulted" some of the Republican's. Grow freakin up!

I am so disgusted I don't even want to look at my 401 k statement in a couple of weeks. Does congress care? NOOOOOOO they have a lucrative retirement plan that is basically unaffected by market influences.

I have a feeling I am going to be working when I am 60. Thanks George Dubya!

Here's What I'd Like to See

First, a joint statement from Sen. Obama and Sen McCain stating exactly what points they can agree MUST be included in any rescue plan. There must be a few points that they can agree on, and those can serve as the framework for the agreement. If they can also agree on some points that must NOT be included, then they can state that, too.

Also (thanks Thom Hartmann), part of the funding mechanism for this rescue plan should include the reimposition of a transaction fee on all trading of securities. Let's make is 1/2 of 1%. This isn't an amount that would be a burden on the small trader, but it would make a dent in the speculative earnings of major traders. With the daily volume of trading that we've seen over the past few years, it would generate billions of dollars and it would also serve the purpose of slowing down speculative trading. According to Thom, this fee existed in the not too distant future and when last in effect was 1/4 of 1%, but has been as high as 2% in the past. It would mean that some of the funds for the bailout would come from the traders on wall street.

I've looked down the roll call vote and it is pretty obvious that there was a lot of bi-partisan butt-covering by a lot of Representatives who are afraid of doing anything. And I am pretty sure that SOMETHING needs doing. Maybe we need our representatives to enact it a little piece at a time instead of trying for a comprehensive solution.

A little statesmanlike behavior would be nice.

Hank

why did all Arizona House Members Vote "NO" on Bail Out (McCain)

If "hero" McCain went to Washington to "save the economy" then why did all AZ House Members vote "NO" on the bail out?

Because they got their

Because they got their itty-bitty feelings hurt by the big bad Nancy Pelosi.

Give me a break. I heard on FOX this morning that the Republicans voted for it and the Democrats voted it down. What F'ing liars!!!!!

Last week Rachel said McCain will probably win ...

Rachel that announcement was a real downer. I hope you retract that statement.

Rachel predicted John

Rachel predicted John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, Not Obama, McCain

Rachels predictions are not better than everything tries on a Dartboard.

English a second language?

EOM

"I don't like to be pushin' athwart me betters."--Long John Silver

It's okay if Rachel doesn't think Obama will win.

Rachel's a pessimist. She's the cheeriest pessimist the world has ever seen, but still.

Back in January she told Howard Dean that she thought the primaries would be over by Super Tuesday, making the primaries over much too quickly. A few months later she thought that Hillary wouldn't quit at all, fighting all the way to the convention.

Plus, she was convinced that Jeb Bush was going to end up being the Republican nominee.

I think she's just lowering her expectations to avoid the pain if things go badly. I think of it as playful pessimism.

Hmm - Didn't I Say This the Other Day...?

I asked Rachel to address why she feels that way on her radio show, since that's where she said it. I think Cap'n pointed out Diebold (sorry, "Premiere Election Solutions") cooking the voting machines...again....

Well, if it helps any

I believe Obama will win and not by a small margin. Look, it takes all kind of views when you are commenting on such a tumultuous year in politics, but in the end we will all know the outcome soon enough.

However, I have had amazing success in predicting the victor in our Presidential elections for the past 20+ years. I haven't been wrong yet and this year I feel it will be a strong win for Obama.

Don't know about that, yet.

My mom in PA hates the Republicans but keeps coming up with weird reasons to distrust Obama. Something in her gut doesn't want to like him. I think it's racial.

I agree, there is a bias but

We won't likely know until November 5th, so we will have to wait and see. And yes, Obama is experiencing lots of racial bias (don't know about your mother) and will continue to do so. Heck look at the slimy tricks that the McCain is trying to use as racial stereotyping (as if we will forget that the man is not white). It is vulgar, evil, nasty and so much more, but it is part and parcel of the racial bias our country seems to nurture.

That said, I still am quietly smiling when I think of the electoral outcome...

Rachel is out of touch with the Economy

The guy before does not have a clue about a credit crunch on Wall Street. You may not like this 700 bio Deal.

When 4 of the biggest US Banks crashed in less than 3 threes as it happens since 2004. I would very hard
reconsider Mr Paulsons Plan. The US does not have any savings. Everything is financed from Russia, China, Korea, Japan.

The US Treasury bills ranks with a AAA but this is a very temporary state. It is much closer to a B3 Rating.
The USA Triple A is something Moody called a cornerstone for the global financial community.Millions of
401 retirements savings are based on this US Triple AAA.

When US banks can't lend money as it is now. You can foreign banks for additional money but higher much higher interest rates 7 - 15 % - that of course have direct impact on Boeing, GM who require additional money. GM should then at least 10 % pay on the capital market. A rate which they can't afford.

The US capitalismus model is dead. Dead for centuries.

CLEARLY CONTEMPT

I'm sick and tired of you Rachel and David making exuses for McCain / Bush admn. You lack perspective when commenting that McCain's demeanor wasn't contempt during the debates. It couldn't be more clear that that was what was happening during it. It's easy for you and other democrats to continue to shrug this behavior off as something not so mean or bad, but I have no question in my mind that that was what he was doing. If you were of another color, you would easily know that this is a tactic done by people who think that ethnic people are sub. They refuse to look at them or acknowledge their presence. Obviously this behavior has never happened to you or you'd recognize it right away. Pure D CONTEMPT.

In other news: Justice Dept US attorneys scandal rolls on

I thought Mukasey would just play out the clock on this one, but it looks as though he's actually trying to do something - or at least give the appearance of trying to do something - about Gonzales' sorry actions and legacy:

www.nytimes.com/2008/09/30/washington/30attorney.html (emphasis mine)

An internal Justice Department investigation concluded Monday that political pressure drove the firings of several federal prosecutors in a 2006 purge, but said that the refusal of major players at the White House and the department to cooperate in the year-long inquiry produced significant “gaps” in its understanding of the events.

At the urging of the investigators, who said they did not have enough evidence to justify recommending criminal charges in the case, Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey appointed the Acting United States Attorney in Connecticut, Nora Dannehy, to continue the inquiry and determine whether anyone should be prosecuted. [snip]

The investigation, which uncovered White House e-mail messages not previously made public, offered a blistering critique of Mr. Gonzales’s management of the department. It called Mr. Gonzales “remarkably unengaged” in overseeing an unprecedented personnel review, and said that he “abdicated” his administrative responsibilities, leaving those duties to his chief of staff. It said that the process for deciding which prosecutors were fired was “fundamentally flawed.”

More troubling, the investigation concluded that, despite the denials of the administration at the time of the controversy, political considerations played a part in the firings of at least four of the nine prosecutors.

The most serious case, the report said, was the firing of David Iglesias, the former United States Attorney for New Mexico ... [snip]

Welton Gaddy

Is one of those rare religious people who keep me hoping that religion can be "saved."

Bill Maher is completely anti-religion, and, mostly, rightfully so. The vast majority of organized religions seem to be bound and determined to reshape the world in their own image.

I recently made the switch to one of the progressive religions Dr. Gaddy was speaking of - Unitarian Universalist - from Catholicism and it's changed my life. For the first time, I'm pursuing a spiritual course that doesn't demand I convert the rest of the world to what I believe.

Something to think about

So let me get this straight - hours before the vote McCain was taking credit for making it happen and moments after its failure he’s blaming Obama, who has remained hands off on any creit or blame, because Republicans in the House didn’t deliver enough votes to pass it.

And he’s accusing Obama and Pelosi of putting politics ahead of the country?

Yeah, Firenut - FUNNY How That Works, Isn't it...?

Why, you might think McCain was flailing about, playing The Blame Game - and losing at it badly, wouldn't you...?

do what ?

the entire OBAMA CAMPAIGN has been running the BLAME GAME ! the banks are failing due to barney FRANK and OBAMAS' economy advisor mr. RAINES ( the former head of freedie mac and fannie mae ) mr. frank and mr raines made the call everyone gets a loan ( thinking it was racist if they didn't ) i am sorry to remind you that AFRICAN AMERICANS committ over 90 % of all crimes today, so it should be no SURPRIZE that the majority of AFRICAN AMERICANS are also the CREDIT CRIMINALS ruining our mortgage banking industry . PRO - RESPONSIBILITY needs to be installed NATION WIDE !!!!

I wonder if Palin is going to wear her hair over her ears so she can hide the earpiece she'll be wearing to hide the fact someone will be telling her what to say.

I believe

the debate is Thursday, certainly not tomorrow as it is a Jewish holiday.

But Palin Will Show Up Anyway ;)

Rachel nixes radio career for the "big time" ....

I was sad to read this in the LATimes but not surprised:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-maddow29-2008sep29,0,6426052....

"Maddow worries about losing her distinct persona in the glare of television but said she has no desire to remain in the freer environs of radio."

"I'm trying to be influential," she said. "I'm trying to be part of the discussion. You reach people in television in a way that allows you to make more of an impact. If that's the game you've decided to play, you might as well try to win."

Good-bye and good luck, Rachel!! I hope your impact is as influential as you hope!! You'll be missed but when your heart isn't in radio - it's time to give it up to those who do care./ who have the desire.

Maybe Sam and Marc have the desire to remain in the "freer environs of radio."

Takecare .... :) :) :) :)

Peace

Deborah from Kansas

That is something new (and I don't know how to take it)

I have not seen that statement in any other interview or article - a bit of a surprise! Rachel has said she wanted to do both radio and TV... I think she might be on AAR for a while longer, but maybe with a true 1 hr show? Things are fluid and the Magic 8 ball says "Ask Again Later"

That statement

would seem to be in conflict with what Rachel told Keith the night they announced her show on MSNBC. She told him that she would continue to host her radio show since others on the Right do TV and radio daily.

As someone (me) who has been quoted in newspapers (albeit in much smaller arenas), I can tell you that reporters reshuffle quotes to suit the article and read into what the interviewee has said things that he or she never meant at all.

Based on Rachel's own statements on Countdown, I'm going to reserve judgment and wait and see.

We may know sooner than later in any case depending on how long Rachel's contract with Air America has to go.

Unsure

Yeah, I'm not even sure they interpreted her statement correctly. The article says, "she has no desire to remain in the freer environs of radio," but then the actual quote from Rachel doesn't say anything like that. All Rachel says is that TV has more impact and she wants to do well at it. She doesn't say that she's quitting radio.

::groan:: You got to wonder where they come up w/these "quotes"

I'd snarl about the incompetent sensationalizing present-day MSM and its ownership by a handful of huge corrupt conglomerates - but honestly, they were pulling the same crap in the Nineteenth, Eighteenth and Seventeenth Centuries. In fact, this kind of nonsense was going on in German media in the Fifteenth Century - only difference is, nobody has (yet) suggested that Muqtada al-Sadr is actually a bloodsucking vampire (like the German news pamphlets did about Wallachian Warlord Vlad Tepes Drakul).

My college friend used to

My college friend used to draw cartoons of Drakul wearing a black turtleneck and a confused look. He called him "Vlad the sensitive impaler."

::snicker!:: I'd find that funnier if I hadn't seen

the Stephanie Meyer vampire books - which are ALL about just that kind of guy.

I was thinking more of Fred Saberhagen's or Tamora Pierce's take on The Vlad myself....

Thank you .....

Also 'Thank you's" to Ryan and Domitype (?) .... for responding to me. It gave me "reflection." :) :)

Takecare .... :) :) :) :)

McCain save us all (Yes its Satire)

Today was another typification of McCain losing his mind 133 Republicans voted No on a bailout that there administration created the need for and then blamed Senetor Obama for the failure. Good use of air time

Hi,
Who can help me? I can't say I am fully up to speed on all topics there just isn’t that much time in the day. Why, with all the media coverage isn’t somebody making good use of all the air time to explain the details of the bailout plan? I had heard they were going to post the plan on a website for the public to review, did anyone ever see the web address come up? Even if I read it, would I understand it?

All I am asking for is for an educated, neutral person to throw up a slideshow and break it down for me so i (ya know) “The People” can have some say in this. I feel like I’ve been sent away so they can have “grown-up talk!”

Okay, I just needed to vent a little.

B44 .....

Hi ....

C-Span has the actual Bail-out bill/plan on their website. I emphaze with the need to vent!! So, let me add, so I won't add to your need to vent more - I read on C-Span they had the bail-out plan but I didn't "go-there" myself to check it out. I'm trusting C-Span they were telling the truth, which they usually do. :) :)

Takecare, :) :) :) :)

Peace

Okay, I just needed to vent a little.

I am not sure where you have been but.... Leaders or crooks in Washington/Wall Street have found out today that crime does not pay!!!!! But, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats (who have not done a damn thing as the present majority) are trying to blame Bush and all the Republicans for the financial market going down the tubes right now!

The Democrats are the ones that deregulated the Markets in 2002 and have sat on their hands....blocking everything in the Legislation since because they are soooo proud that they are the Majority!!!!

Hope that helps some.

Maybe I'm too dense, but....

.... if everyone in Congress is saying that everyone hated the bail-out bill, isn't it then a good thing it didn't pass??? I mean, who wants to see enacted legislation that no one likes? Maybe now they'll get their sh*t together and come back with a decent, less-hated bill.

Laura Tyson

Really appreciated Rachel Maddow having Laura Tyson on the air to explain the bailout bill failure. Quite illuminating!

I hope you are not serious!

I hope you are not serious!

WOW! You are presistent!

At least you have unlocked your caps. But that's not the point, is it?

You need to get a grip on demise of this country, courtesy of Ronald Reagan (GOP). You need to offer real explanations for your statements, not just partisan babble! If you have any concept of what is truly threatening the future of the United States of America, then you would understand that this is NOT about partisan talking points. This is about an economy that is in serious trouble and how to address the problem. You can harp about it being the Democrat's doing, or I could site the Republican's policy of deregulation of everything. Would that solve anything? Not right now!

Here's a little issue I have a problem with:

You explain this to me, okay? The long time CEO of WaMu "resigned", okay? WaMu installed a new CEO for something like 9 days before the FDIC seized and sold WaMu! Now, here's the rub! For his 9 days of service, he collected something like $13,000,000!!!! You tell me, what did this guy do for 9 days that would justify that kind of paycheck?

Now then, I don't care where your political affiliation falls, however, to blindly follow one side or the other is about as unpatriotic as one can get. To refuse to seriously investigate the merits of each candidate is inexcusable! Wake Up! John McCain changes his position on an hourly basis! John McCain claims credit for the "Bail Out", but now the "Bail Out" FAILED! Why? Let's ask John McCain! What do you think his response will be? Here it is: "This is the result of the "Clinton Policies, which Obama supports".

You should know that the CEO's of the 4 largest financial instit
