UNDERBELLY STORY
It has become a mainstream political perspective to argue that the private sector can always do things more efficiently than government. In all the hoohah about Halliburton and Custer Battles and all the contractors in Iraq, not many people question the basic premise of why it is that private companies are doing all this government work. Sure, we worry about fraud and about waste and about no-bid contracts, but the fact that this work is being contracted-out rather than done by the government itself has become basically accepted. Then you read a story like the airport security boondoggle on the front page of today’s Washington Post...

his book was about the Commies and how they want to eat your children.

Talk Show Washout Tries Again
Perhaps the best way to sum up an MSNBC talk show that describes itself as "so fast - it's changing the pace of news" is by adopting the program's taste for summary judgment: "The Situation," starring Tucker Carlson, a former host of CNN's "Crossfire," is all cross and no fire.

I am having the same problem. I can locate and add the show via the PodCast Directory, but it doesn't download.
I am using mac OSX, maybe that has something to do with it. All I can find on the Apple/iTunes support site is that they don't support all file formats yet.
Has ANYONE here been able to grab Rachel's (or any Air America) podcast through iTunes?

By ihelpu2seeJune 30, 2005 - 8:27pmUnable to Download - INFORMATION UPDATE
The Download link here does work, however you must use the direct mp3 download link unless you have a program like iPodder, iPodderX, Doppler or others that support the Bit Torrent Protocol.
At the current time, the feed needs to be tuned(address changed slightly) to be compliant with the iTunes requirements. There is many podcasts that are not compliant with the unique iTunes requirements yet.
I will put in the information to Air America Place to see that the archive feed can be tuned to be compliant with iTunes. If one goes to the podcastalley.com web page details for The Rachel Maddow Show, there is a tuner link for making a podcast iTunes compliant,
Keep in mind that iTunes 4.9 was brought out a month earlier in order to be the first all in one(subscribes, downloads & plays) podcast subscription program. It is really a later stage public beta program. There will be other all in one podcast subscription programs coming soon from Odeo(from the people that wrote Blogger), from Yahoo and others.
At this early point in time, in just 2 days time, iTunes itself has increased podcast subscriptions by well over one million(http://playlistmag.com/news/2005/06/30/podcastitunes/index.php) and the iTunes Music Store has been so overwhelmed by hits that it has been inaccessable several times already.

Its downloading the file to a temp internet sub-directory. You can find the file by doing a search using 0ne day option, *.wma for the file name, search of drive C:, most likely. Why not just use the other link "Stream today's show here" to stream the show to your media player? I hope this helps.

By Eagle-EyedJune 30, 2005 - 9:13pmLove listening to Rachael... but ..
I'm a Northampton resident and have been listening to Rachael for a long time.. I really miss her last show, but at least I get to stream her new one, and now the local station airs it at 9:00 cutting one hour of Springer.. that works for me... Springer did say something so right on yesterday.. "after 911 we should have spent our money on national defense, and then find out why these people want to knock down our buildings and work on fixing that" I guess the repubs would look at that as giving the terrorists therapy.... But that's not what this post is about.... Oh man now I feel bad about my post.. it's show critisism... ouch, but my girlfriend and I listen often and feel the same, so it's just a couple of minor tweaks to a great show.. here we go
I know she loves the Sharp stick comment..It's been apart of her show for a long long time, but it's getting a little stale, and maybe if the german tongue roll was left out...
And Kent Jones Now... Now Now Now... it got old really early in her new show... It's like those bad skits on the later years of Saturday Night Live that were never good or good once and they did it week after week....
Keep up the great work, and lets get back the three hour slot... As much as I like the Springer show, the fact that he did and still does his TV show belittles Air America.. Sure wish Al was on this week to respond the Bush's address

I still like the Kent Jones NOW. Cracks me up every time.
But to be perfectly honest, the "Sharp Stick to the Underbelly" has always given me the willies. Republican underbellies... <shiver> I just prefer not to think about that...

I like Kent Jones, the sarcasim is refreshing. I always right click the direct down load link at the bottom right and save as to the desktop. I then load it on to my iPod and listen on the way to work.... And yes I wish Unfiltered was back instead of Springer... and Al is great.. . Im only 30 to 45 min from North Hampton and I cant get the AM station the show is broadcast on???

By ihelpu2seeJune 30, 2005 - 8:12pmThis is the best by far news hour on radio!
I find your show to be a very nice balance of entertainment and reliably factual, salient news. It is so jammed-packed with facts that I often need to listen to each show twice to absorb it all, first live, semi-distracted at work and again when I can give it my full attention when on a run after work. (OK, I have a relatively pea-sized right brain,so what.)
I doubt if anybody at TRMS would come into my place of work and tell me how to do my job(well, you could try). I prefer to "leave the driving" to you all. Besides, you're doing an outstanding job!
Kent jones is great, an asset to the show. I love your blog posts and links. Keep poking the underbelly, or not...your call; and I'll keep expressing my views about content, but not form. (It's so much fun!)

By DrGermJune 30, 2005 - 2:03pmRunnaway bride story
Funny, I read that article and came away viewing this event as less than magnanimous, mainly because of what I believe the family(or reporter) left out of the article. The opening sentence reads: "A young woman decided to call off her wedding 12 days before the event and her parents knew they'd be stuck with the bill, so they decided to have a party anyway and invited the homeless."
This is the way I see it. The parents of the bride are in a panic over losing about 10k, so they decide to have a party to consume the food already paid for. Business-savvy New York uncle of the not-bride says, " Hey, you know if you invite a bunch of homeless people to your party and let them take home the left-overs, you can cut your losses and write part or all off as a tax deduction." I think the opening sentence of the article should read: "A young woman decided to call off her wedding 12 days before the event and her parents knew they'd be stuck with the bill, so they decided to have a party anyway.... and invited the homeless... so they could cut their loss and write it off on their Schedule C, a win-win deal."
Of course, I have no facts to support this. Maybe this family's apparent generosity was really a random act of kindness and not motivated by a tax deduction and I'm being too cynical.

By DrGermJune 30, 2005 - 3:00pmDownloading AAR Shows by Bob at Air America Place
Here is what Bob(airamericaplace.com archivist) says currently about downloading AAR shows while the early iTunes 4.9 version and the Apple site get things worked out:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Posted June, 30, 2005
1. Why can't I download Air America Radio (AAR) podcasts through iTunes?
We here at Air America Place (AAP) offer AAR podcasts via bittorrent to maximize bandwidth. Apple did not include functionality to subscribe and receive these bittorrent podcasts in iTunes.
2. Why was Apple this short-sighted?
Good question.
3. Can I still podcast AAR shows?
Of course! We've been podcasting for months, and we still offer many ways to podcast or download AAR radio shows as MP3's.
Four options spring to mind
(1) download direct from our archive: http://www.airamericaplace.com/archive.php
(2) download via bittorrent: http://podcastingcouch.com/air_america/
(3) podcast (auto-download) the bittorrent files here: http://podcastingcouch.com/air_america/podcast_feeds/ You'll need a podcasting client that supports bittorrent. I recommend Azureus with the RSS Importer Plug in. It works on any kind of computer (Mac, PC, Linux). I've been told that iPodderX works well also.
(4) download straight from alt.binaries.air-america on usenet newsgroups: http://easynews.com
NOTE: options 2-4 provide higher-quality MP3's. Option 1 is half the file size and half the sound quality.
4. Are you ever going to be compatible with iTunes?
We're working on it right now. We may have a solution in a day or two. Also, Apple may add bittorrent functionality to iTunes and thereby fix the problem first.
5. What can I do to help?
Three things.
(1) Bug apple to include bittorrent podcasts in iTunes.
(2) For every AAR podcast link in iTunes (except the Franken files from Sundance) click the "report a concern" button, and kindly ask them to link all non-Sundance channel AAR podcasts to this file:
http://www.airamericaplace.com/upload/aarpodcast.mp3
This little MP3 will explain the situation and will tell them to come here to podcast.
(3) Come back to this thread, and keep us updated on any developments you stumble upon":
http://www.airamericaplace.com/boards/index.php?showtopic=10269
Note from GAP: In addition to what Bob said about programs like iPodderX & Azureus, I have also heard that iPodder, Doppler and the coming soon Odeo will work with AAR downloads.
AAR shows via AAP is among many podcast shows that are not compatible currently with iTunes. All one has to do is just read a little of the forums at podcastalley.com to see that this is a common problem. apple.com/itunes & the iTunes music store are being so overrun with hits that they are down at times.

Ok, I've gotta say this "resemblance" strikes me as a whole lot less than uncanny. As in, how often have you seen a straight brow line that continues past the corners of the eyes in both directions morph into a pair of curve crescents that don't quite cover the eyeballs?
Of course, if all us Asians look alike, I suppose that goes for Southwest Asians, too. :red:
