Amendment Targets Gay Marriage in Massachusetts

This week, Massachusetts lawmakers will consider a constitutional amendment intended to roll back the state’s law, unique in the country, which allows same-sex couples to wed. The initiative has been championed by Republican governor Mitt Romney, said to considering a presidential bid, and several of the state’s high-ranking Catholic officials. The bishops have rejected criticism of the amendment as discriminatory, saying same-sex couples are suffering from “an exaggerated sense of entitlement” in believing they deserve the same rights as other American citizens. 165 prominent business and civic leaders, including the mayor of Boston, have taken out an ad in Boston papers urging the state legislature to reject the amendment.

Right. So homosexuals are seen as wanting more than they're due.

Y'know, the African-Americans want a lot of the same things. In fact, they already have most of them (except maybe voting rights, but that's a topic for a different thread).

The pagans do too, and have most of them (except maybe the right to put their religious symbol on a veteran's grave marker).

Spanish-speaking immigrants? Same thing.

Native Hawaiians? Yep.

Native Americans in general? Mmm-hmm.

What minorities am I forgetting here? There must be at least a half-dozen more. And they all pretty much want one thing: the rights of citizens.

So tell me...why don't they have them? Oh, that's right. Silly me. They don't have them because neo-cons don't think they should. After all, the line has to be drawn somewhere, right? No coincidence

It's more than a coincidence, it's a systematic attempt to destroy the system. Vouchers for private schools will help fund the schooling for rich kids to good private schools, and leave the poor kids who get enough together to get the tuition for a private school in the kind of private school where none of the teachers are credentialed. One of my relatives teaches in a private school because she couldn't pass the state credentials exam IN ANY OF THE STATES where she tried. I have yet to be convinced that any but the most elite private schools does a better job than public schools. Where SAT and ACT scores are concerned, they don't. That's why in Colorado all the kids in public schools are forced to take the tests, to lower the SAT and ACT test scores at public schools and make the private school scores look more favorable in comparison.
And don't even get me started on NCLB!

Colorado huh??? I was out there beginning a school psychology program at UNC...during which we had some great debates about NCLB and how it effects public schools (such as those poorer districts in Greeley). I ended up not finishing the school psych program (although I'm back in school in a different area now) because you can see where all of the money is going to and where the priorities lie. As a school psychologist, you may be the most underutilized tool in the entire building/district...having to test all day long because you have to "justify" getting kids help - it was so damn ridiculous.

I'm an Ohio native who was accepted to their Ed.S. school psych program which I accepted their offer without ever going out there. Little did I know about the Greeley smell. I can't say anything bad about UNC - having only been there for a single semester - in fact, their school psych program had some great faculty. Many were well recognized in their field and they were extremely helpful and dedicated to their students - however my basis for comparison is OSU (THE Ohio State University) which routinely has class sizes of 600+.

How do you like the UNC brochure showing the mountains in the background? I'd like to know how they did that!
Greeley as a whole is pretty hostile to education, so it has a strange disconnect with the university. It's a university town without the university community. There is very little for university students to do there, not much culturally, and the redneck attitude has managed to keep any kind of university culture limited pretty much to the campus.

Codifying discrimination

This amendment, an attempt to placate the fundamentalist zelots, will codify bigotry and discrimination in the MA contitution, a first for that state. Also, what will happen to the hundreds of couples who are now legally married? With the stroke of a pen their legal rights will be taken away, and that is the heart of the matter. The theocratic movement in this country must be stopped. Freedom cannot exist in a theocracy, that is what our forefathers feared when the added the seperation of church and state.

Okay, here's a point that no one seems to want to make: every time you have sex with someone, you're also having sex with everyone that person has ever had sex with. HIV, hepatitis B, herpes simplex, chlamydia...the gifts that keep on giving.

Here's a conspiracy theory for you. Why do the neo-cons want "abstinence only" education? Because it keeps manufacturers of ARV drugs raking in profits. If the concept of "safe sex for couples" ever got out, people would spend more money on such things as condoms instead of drugs to treat their herpes outbreaks. Two bucks for three rubbers vs. fifty bucks for a month's supply of a medicine that rapidly turns into a maintenance drug, at least until the person in question isn't concerned with how pretty their genitals are any more...where's the profit for Big Drugs in that? So Big Drugs lobbies their neo-con representatives, the ones they contributed to so heavily during their election campaigns, and tells them how evil all this "safe sex" stuff is, and why they should be teaching "abstinence only" in schools. Up go their profits, after only a few short years.

I would still like to know how gay people marrying will undermine your child rearring. Explain to your children who they are when the child asks. Trust, your child will ask if your child wants to know, and will keep asking until it receives the answer to its question that is satisfactory.

You may give your child everything it needs to succeed in life and your child will do whatever it wants with it. Once your child reaches adulthood, you have no control over them, just as your parents had not control over you when you became an adult.

Republican benefactor of conservative Christian groups, Richard A. Dasen Sr., was found guilty of raping a 15-year old girl. Dasen, 62, who is married with grown children and several grandchildren, has allegedly told police that over the past decade he paid more than $1 million to have sex with a large number of young women.

Too many "churches" (think Southern Baptist Convention, for one) have their hooks too deeply in too many politicians to lose their tax-exempt status, at least until one really REALLY screws up and doesn't just cross the line, but stumbles over it and falls headlong into the cesspool. It's come close to happening a couple of times, but not in recent memory, and both times the politicians exerted their influence and got the investigation stalled out.

I'd love to see Falwell, Jackson and Robertson (especially Robertson) get slapped down for sticking their churches into the middle of politics. But I'm not holding my breath.

A RECOVERING LIBERAL EXCLUSIVE Last week’s arrest of the fourth highest person in the vaunted Department of Homeland Security, Brian Doyle, brought back memories of other notable folks on the right who preached the Good Book but were really, really bad boys. Republican judge Mark Pazuhanich of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania pled no contest to fondling a 10-year old girl and was sentenced to 10 years probation.

Republican Party leader Bobby Stumbo of Floyd County, Kentucky was arrested for having sex with a 5-year old boy.

Republican teacher and former city councilman John Collins of Asbury Park, New Jersey pled guilty to sexually molesting 13 and 14 year old girls.

Republican campaign worker Mark Seidensticker of Nashua, New Hampshire is a convicted child molester.

Republican Mayor Philip Giordano of Waterbury, Connecticut is serving a 37-year sentence in federal prison for sexually abusing 8 and 10-year old girls.

Republican Mayor John Gosek of Oswego, New York was arrested on charges of soliciting sex from two 15-year old girls.

Republican County Commissioner David Swartz of Richland County, Ohio pled guilty to molesting two girls under the age of 11 and was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

Republican Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Edison Misla Aldarondo was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping his daughter between the ages of 9 and 17.

Republican Committeeman John R. Curtain of Monroe County, Pennsylvania was charged with molesting a teenage boy and unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

Mass. Court Ruling Makes Sense

The Mass. Supreme Court made the right decision, in allowing the electorate to vote on the issue of same-sex marriage. After all, marriage is a privilege - not a right - and is bestowed through the democratic process, in accordance with the benefit or detriment that such an institution will bring to society. As I've shown in previous strings, gay marriage would be of no benefit to society and, in fact, would be a detriment to it, in terms of creating a culture favoring the homosexual lifestyle, the heightened and serious health risks associated with same-sex behavior, and the transient nature of same-sex relationships, even in countries, like Sweden and the Netherlands, which have institutionalzed same-sex marriage for some time. Therefore, same-sex marriage would further diminish the institution of marriage below its already weakened state, since these Scandanavian studies proved that male homosexuals are 50% more likely to divorce than straight males, and lesbians are over 150% more likely to divorce than straight females.
